Strength:

It works amazingly well for Music CD's and the menu system is well laid out

Weakness:

won't play cd r/rw's and when it does it takes FOREVER to read them

I won this player and at first I was very excited. Pioneer has allways been one of my fav. brands. I was so happy in fact I sold off my "cheapest in town" Technosonic OOPS! This thing is a piece of useless junk, it will only play about 5% of the cd r/rw's I've tried and never has it played a single SVCD though I have tried many.

Strength:

Zoom feature, A/V quality is excellent, speedy loadtime and track access

Weakness:

You have to press "enter" for direct track access.

I've actually been "eyeing" this particulat player for while since it first came out with a price of over $100. When I saw it drop to $78 I decided to buy it with knowing new models will be coming out soon and I did not want to miss the chance to buy it. This player is the twin of the DV-353K execept the front panel buttons are a different shape. The player includes 192Khz/24 bit D/A converters, MP3 playback, 2-4x zoom, CD-R/RW playback, and all the standard DVD video features. It only lacks progressive scan video and DVD Audio/SACD playback. I replaced a defective RCA unit (what else is new) and this unit blows away the RCA (and is $10 less than the RCA). The load time and operation is very quick. The picture quality is also excellent using the component inputs on my JVC TV. The neatest thing about this player that I've never seen before is how the zoom feature zooms in on an object. Instead of the usual press the zoom button and the enlarged section "pops" up, you can acutally see the Pionner zoom, like you were looking through a camera and using the optical zoom. The audio side was also top-notch and the Tru-Surround is effective through my TV speakers. I cannot wait till I can run it through a home theater system and haved the full experience. (I had one but someone else wanted it more so it was stolen out of my house. I'm rebuilding now). This is by far the best DVD player you can get for the money.

Strength:

Everything else works as advertized

Weakness:

S-Video is defective

Based my purchase on other reviews. So far it seems to work ok but the S-Video output does not work right. I took the first unit back and the second one has the same problem. It plays in BLack and white with distortion on high contrast edges. Menu is also unreadable with S-Video. Composite video output is OK

hi! Ive bought this machine 2 weeks ago and my opinion couldnt be more positive. I paid €188 for it, wich was a bargain. The sound will surprise you,and the image wont let you down! I even replaced my Technics Cd player to listen to music only... Looked for the Panasonic RV32 also, but its more expensive, and it can not read SVCDs, wich this can. So i decided for this ( in Portugal its DV-350), and im very happy with it.

Excellent picture and sound Coaxial,Digital, and Component Video Outputs

Weakness:

Yes the Poineer DV-250 is the same player as the DV-353K.I have it hooked up via the component video outputs, and the picture quality is excellent.I played the MATRIX through this player, and it played fine. Some people have trouble with this disc on some other dvd players, but not on this Pioneer. For the money, this is an excellent dvd player, and everyone who doesn't own a dvd player yet should go out and grab this baby.

I recently purchased this Pioneer DVD player from my local Wal-Mart. When I got it home I was horrified to find that although my telivision is equipped with A/V Jacks....I cannot select a Video 1 or AUX channel. I'm quite sure that if I purchase an RF Modulator this problem will be solved. Bottom line....I am 100% satisfied with the products that Pioneer puts on the market year after year and if you're looking for a great DVD player with lots of features, then the DV-250 is just right for the price.

Strength:

Great mp3 implementation. Plays VCD & SVCD. Macrovision is not too objectional. Excellent quality and excellent value.

Weakness:

Does not skip backward within a SVCD title. Would not play "The Sixth Sense".

I also bought the dv-250 from Wal-Mart. It appears to be the same and even shares the same manual as the dv-353. Pioneer has been doing the slim, 2 1/8" tall format for some time. Pioneer also has an excellent reputation for playing any disk and any format. I plugged this into my movie studio in the family room and the family has not let me take it out and test it in my audiophile system. They are afraid I won't put it back! But, for $88, I may just buy another. One of the reasons why the family likes it is because of the great MP3 implementation. The new menus are very easy to read and navigate. We now listen to music more than watching videos. When we watch video, we tend to watch TV shows which have been "time-lapsed" to VCD or SVCD through our PC. We tested some Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic units and had problems. These home made CD-R and CD-RW disks work on the Pioneer without a hitch. My only complaint is that you cannot skip backward with a SVCD. This is a small complaint since the Panasonic and other manufacturers don't support SVCD at all no matter how much you pay. We also watch DVDs from our purchased collection and DVDs rented from Netflix.com. So far, we've had very good luck. However, a copy of "The Sixth Sense" which plays fine in our DV-440 and DV-354 would not play in the DV-250. We also rented a Doris Day movie that had problems about 70 minutes into it. Once ejected and reinserted, it played fine. At least 20 other DVDs played perfect from start to end. Our video room has an old TV (with a beautiful solid oak cabinet) which only has a single RF input. At first, I ran the signal from the DV-250 through a demodulator. The quality wasn't too good. Then, I ran the signal through my Panasonic VCR. I was astonished at the quality. Yes, macrovision causes the signal to dim and brighten, but only slightly. The impact is so slight, that the family doesn't notice until I hit "pause" and show them what to look for. (Note to Hollywood: Get over it. No one wants to copy DVD’s to Videotape. And no one wants to pirate DVD’s when they can buy and rent so cheaply.) I’m itching to test the digital audio output on this unit. I expect it will be fine. This seems to be a commodity feature on DVD players. As long as the D/A converters on your preamp are good and your amp is matched to the speakers, most any DVD player can work as a good transport for music. I only paid $88 so I won’t mention the lack of progressive video or super audio or any of the other expensive bells and whistles that other players may have. For all but the most demanding consumers, this is an EXCELLENT player. Highly recommended!
