Strength:

plays all discs thrown at it eventually

Weakness:

not too many, but they are biggies

well
i got this abotu six month ago. i never really believed in gettin service plans on small cheap gear like this, but i am not making that mistake again.

for soem reason this player was perfect at first, but a month or so later, it would take for ever to read a disk.
now its really annoying, an di woudl think that its only my unit, but i am sure there are a few others.
this is my third dvd player since its introduction. i really wish i went with the same priced toshiba(i hear they play cdrs is why)
i think i will be goign for the new denon 2800 very soon.
the audio is fine on this unit, but the remote, i never got used to. and the disc reading mechanism really needs help.
GET service plan on this item is my main comment in case you run into the problems i have.

my system is a mirage high definition theater system and velodyne hgs 15, denon 2700 and your run of the mill 32" tv.
i shoudl have probbaly spent more on the dvd player in the first place, but oh well.

But how abotu that great selection of dvds to choose from?
Its abotu time we have thousands to pick from :)

hope this helps

Strength:

It WAS cheap, and it plays CDRW's. Well... in theory anyways.

Weakness:

Frequent sound 'skips,' at least five per movie (even NEW, THX disc). Freezes (with lots of pixellation) on about 20% of movies, and is generally unreliable.

Error-correction is virtually non-existent on this player. It 'skips' the sound about five times per movie, and will pixellate/freeze on about 20% of my discs. The only reason I didn't return this during its 30-day return period was because I figured the problem MIGHT be with my receiver (and it's processing of the faulty Dolby Digital signal). However, further testing has revealed that the Pioneer DV-333 player is responsible for the errors. (I don't know that an Onkyo THX receiver is CAPABLE of making mistakes). I even bought Discwasher Disc and Lens cleaning kits, in hopes that this would alleviate the Pioneer problem, but in fact this player has brought my whole otherwise-THX-select certified whole theater system down.

When I tested my system with a Sony PS2 or Panasonic A320 DVD player in lieu of the Pioneer, the system operated flawlessly, never missing a sound beat or pixellating even once.

Funny also is the fact that Pioneer JUST introduced a new model called the DV-343, which has IDENTICAL specs to this DV-333 (and even an IDENTICAL price!), but it adds "Verti-Bi" error correction, something that should have been there in the first place! The way it stands, I cannot tolerate the performance of this DVD player. Even my CD's skip with a frequency never seen before. I swear, even a dirty CD can play in my car's CD player, my discman, or my computer's CD-ROM reliably, but you get ONE fingerprint or slight, slight scratch on ANY kind of disc, and this player will choke on it.

I only hope this can be fixed by Pioneer techs under warranty, and I kick myself for not exchanging this P.O.S. DVD player when I had the chance. It just goes to show you how going 'cheap-o' on just ONE theater component can bring your whole high-quality system to its knees. I've learned my lesson. Onkyo DV-535 player, here I come!

Strength:

Picture quality. Supported media types. Supported mpeg playback types. Price.

Weakness:

User Interface is ugly and lousy (MENUS). Remote could be better, but it doesnt matter to me. Fast forward/rewind choppy. Player is ugly.

I'll try to make this usefull. I did alot fo research on DVD players in this price range, and this is the player I came out buying. If you are consdering a DVD player and only a DVD player look into the panasonic model, even through this is almost as close.

I wanted a player that can play vcd/svcd/xvcd. So chances are not alot of people know what a svd or a xvcd is...and if that is you, there are alot of other options for dvd players in this price range, many I skipped in looking at. However, that does no say anyhting about this payer itself. I was turned on first byt he fact that the dv-333 supported these odd vcd types. Not only does it support them, it plays them flawlessly. I've tried regualr vcd and svcds burned on 3 diff types of emdia including cdr-w. I have used kodak, samsung, and some generic blue ones. And a memorex cd-rw. I burned them all at 8x, and they play fine. No need doing anymore research about what this player will play, for it PLAYS ALL TYPES OF MEDIA. My friends reports it plays vcd burned at 16x. It will play all types of vcds as well, so don't worry about that.

Now a player that plasy all these things shoudl always cause a sense of fear. I mean, can you create a pklayer that does it all and does it GOOD. that was my question. I bought an aex because I wanted a p player that does it all, but the apex doesn't. If you want a vcd/svcd/xvcd player, buy an apex. It does what this one does exactly but only for vcds. DO NOT buy a apex expecting to play DVDS. YOu can get an apex for like 120 and circuitcity.com. Now onto DVDs. To recap, this player plays VCDS GREAT.

DVD playback is nice. Great coloring etc... I've tested the apex (horrible...does not even comapre) and a Sony (high range) and this is up there. As for sound, I am not complaining. No banding, dithering, distortion, blur.

Complaitns about noise with tray or cds should nto be made, it is not loud at all. I have not even noticed until *trying* to notice.

Exlcuding things that are have nothging to do with the actaull playback (Weaknesses), this player is flawless. If your a reg person, but it. If you're a quality freak you CAN find something ebtter, of course, but not with the suppor tthis one has. If you are nto going to play vcd/svcd, and are a mid-range buyer, buy this one anyway, it is worth it. If you are a vcd/svcd person, and want a GOOD DVD player too, BUY IT NOW.

Strength:

Plays anything you put in it: CDR's, CDRW's. Plays homemade VCDs, SVCDs, XVCDs and XSVCD's at a bitrate upto 2500kbit/s at nearly any resolution (highest I've tried is 720x480)

Weakness:

The lack of more than one speed of FF/RW. Goes at one speed. All the other DVD players I've had have mad multiple speeds of FF. It's pretty fugly too.

An Excellent reasonably priced player; Especially if you're looking to burn your own VCD's and SVCD's.

Strength:

features are great and it plays like you are in the theater. As long as you have a digital reciever and good speakers

Weakness:

The damm thing sounds like it's going to take off!

When I first brought this home I was so happy with it and had no complaints. Now all of a sudden I'm starting to notice that the player is making more and more noise as the days go by. I hope it is just defective because I am going to exchange it for the same one. If it wasn't for the noisy tray I would give this product 5 stars. But I like everyhting to be perfect and this just isn't doing it for me.

Strength:

Inexpensive. Best picture and audio quality for the money.
Plays CD-R and CD-RW discs

Weakness:

FF/REW is jerky. Remote.

I just purchased this player after the drive mechanism in the Pioneer DV-414 needs to be replaced. I can play DVD's but not CD's. It was going to cost me $125 to fix so I decided I might as well and grab this player instead for a little more. I was totally happy with the DV-414. So that said I thought I would stay with Pioneer. There are a few improvements over the 414. One thing is the 'resume feature'. I hated when you stopped playing a DVD and it couldn't go back to where you left off. This has been added to the DV-333. Also disc loading times are much faster it seems. The 414 seemed very slow in loading up the discs. The remote has changed a little. The layout is a little better than the 414 but its still not great. Best to use your universal remote. Picture quality seems to be the same as well as the audio quality. I use this as my main CD player so the fact that it reads CD-R and CD-RW is a big plus. If you're looking for an inexpensive player under $200 I don't know that you can find better to date.

Strength:

Excellent brand, quality, long-lasting durability. Extremely compatible with
MANY different formats of digital video

Weakness:

It ONLY supports 16:9 DVD's. Any 16:9 material on VCD, SVCD, or XVCD format will be displayed stretched vertically. Will not letterbox or pan & scan. Not a problem if you use a Sony Wega since the TV will compress and letterbox for you.

The BEST player on the market today. Will play ANYTHING you throw at it:
CDR, CDRW, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, DVD, and CD-Audio.

I convert my mini-DV movies to XVCD at 720x480 res and this plays them beautifully! Looks very, very close to DVD quality.

Strength:

Excellent picture & sound. Also, it plays CD-R & CD-RW. Excellent value.

Weakness:

Does not have zoom feature, but I knew that when I purchased it. FF is jerky but I also knew that.

This unit is an excellent player for the money. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality unit for a good price. So far I have played about a half dozen dics on it with no problem. It even handled the so called problem areas on the Matrix without a glitch. I highly recommened this player to anyone who would like a decent player without breaking the bank.

Strength:

digital output components for both audio and video

Weakness:

remote seems cheap

I bought this DVD player, solely on the reviews that I read here. I have found that most of the things said are true. I have tried cd's and cd-r's in thie player and they played without a problem. I have played two different moview (both rented) and the picture and sound is excellent. I have a Pioneer dolby digital receiver that I have hooked the dvd player up to and it is amazing at how good the sound is when using the optical output hookup. I also have hooked it to my tv using the S-Video and that also is amazing. I have not usedthe regular hookups, so I can not compare the differences, but the digitial output is great on both compontents.

A lot of people have indicated that the DVD player makes a sound when playing a movie. I could here sound with the second movie I played (Gladiator), but could not with the first one (Bowfinger). I have not had a chance to test another one as of yet. When playing Gladiator (which I watched twice), I could here the sound no matter how high I had the volume (within reason). THe jury is still out for me on this product, but I think it is a keeperas the video and audio is excellent and I think the noise can be overlooked based on the other pluses I see here.
