Excellent Audio and THX-Certified Video. Progressive scan player? Don't waste your time, or money. If you just want a CD player, you may want to look in to this model. It's fabulous. Construction is good. This is a tank. It has a load of outputs that are all goldplated. It passes any and every signal you can put thru it with many options to choose from.

Weakness:

none

The picture is wonderful, as is the audio. Especially, the CD audio. Wow! I think this has to be one of the best CD players ever designed. I own a decent Sony CD player via an optical connection. There's no comparison. As for movies, it's simply great! I've compared it to a lot of these progressive players, and I think this player can hang with the best of them. This is the reason why I haven't wasted my money with a new player. Obviously, blue-ray players are better. In the meantime, I'm happy with it. I would highly recommend this player to anybody. Of course, cables make a huge difference. Don't cut your system short with bad cables. You can find some good deals on Ebay.

Strength:

build qulaity, cd and dvd playback, outputs, transport.

Weakness:

picky laser, slow tracking, poor remote layout, no progressive scan.

Got this unit used about 3 months ago in like new condition. Build quality is serious. CD playback is very impressive. Best I've ever heard in a DVD player. Transport is to die for. DVD play is also impressive, except that the player is very picky. Will not play dirty CDs or DVDs without skipping. Also, despite what others here have said, my unit will not read CDRs. My unit was made in 1999. And yes, the remote is bad. They should have used a backlit model like that on my Pioneer CLD D03 laserdisc player. Despite all of this, the unit is worth every bit of the $500 I paid for it used.

Strength:

True color reproduction Crisp detail Simplicity

Weakness:

The remote is dreadfully laid out but luckily a universal learning remote can cure that.

I have had this unit for about 3 months now and am very impressed by the picture quality that it provides. It displays the stunning minute details in the superbit edition of the Fifth Element crisply. Im using a Panasonic 47WX49 HDTV as the monitor and since the DV-09 is not progressive scan, im very curious to see what the picture looks like with a nice external doubler. The half inch thick copper sheild adds weight to the unit but the picture and quiet playback is well worth the bulkyness. This unit also has a video circutry bypass if used as a CD player as well as cd analog outs. I have had one problem with it though....Sometimes during playback the laser picks up the tiniest of imperfections on the discs and freezes for a moment.

Strength:

Looks, Quality build.

Weakness:

Remote, Pioneer's service in Canada, In the shop again.

The DV-09 is an excellent DVD player. I am impressed at the virtual silence when playing DVDs and the picture is excellent. However, I am having ongoing problems with this unit stopping in the middle of movies and it's slow chapter searching that sometimes locks right up. I have sent it to Pioneer who claimed that it was just dirty DVDs. However the service tech at Audio Warehouse found the same problems on multiple DVDs.

damn remote control that only Mini-Me can use....

To make it short and sweet,if you need a real compromise between a state of the art DVD player and a audiophile transport and have less than $1000US to spend this unit is it.If you have a digital tv the images are truly stunning, colouration, depth, expansions are breath taking, audio aspect is IMHO should be a class B on Stereophiles reviews list.A great unit that is form and funstion...........

Sometimes a product comes along that truly distinguishes themselves above others,an item that even though is many years "older" than the "state of the art" line,an item that is form and function. The Elite Dv 09 is such said item. With all the common features that is needed for home theater(dts.dolby, etc)this unit shows amazing flexiblility with audio and visual aspect.Picture wise it shows incredible depth of colour and precise details, even though going widescreen the edges somewhat softens abit but does not distract from the wonderful presentation,on plasma screens its stunning, you could swear your looking thru a clear window at the actual image, its that stunning. The Dv 09 audio portion is the ultimate strength, this IMHO is on the same level as the class B on Stereophiles end of the year reviews,I owned many "high end" transports and this unit is just as good or better and cost 1/4 of the price, its soundstaging even though shallow shows amazing clarity and location, instruments are precisely where it should be,spacial seperation is excellent and clean, the musical "air" is present and provides a warm presentation for majority of sources.Width is wide but not too extensive. The signature sound is more analogue than digital.Comestic wise I luv the rosewood panels,it adds abit of "classic" theme where usually metal dominates audio products,LED is easly to read and practical, the weight is legendary(0ver 35lbs!),the enclosure is designed to dampened any wayward vibrations. The ONLY weak link in this unit is the humorous remote, unless you have Dr Evils mini me fingers the buttons are placed too close together. If you can find a use one on the market dont hesitate to buy one,if there were a "classic" DVD/CD player that can provide a true listening and viewing pleasure this product is it,even though its not "state of the art".Salute..ciao

This ''beast'' is the ultimate dvd player for those seeking quality and substance over trendy ''add-ons''..It doesn''t have progressive scan-but if thats your pic, any line-doubler can do the job..As a transport it is unbeatable, also-The picture is film quality-its asthetically appealing! It was a great value at 2000!
