Strength:

Sharp detailed picture, great audio w/movies

Weakness:

sloooow layer change, menu navigation could be better.

I had been looking for a progressive scan dvd player to compliment my new 61" DLP. I tried a lot of players (see list below) and the only one to exceed it was the Denon 5900, a $2K dvd player! All the others just plain sucked. I never had any problems with freezes.

Strength:

thin size fits great in with other components in my entertainment center. I also like the plain front w/o all the lights, buttons and screens. The service dept sent me a return shipping label the next day at no cost

Weakness:

well.....the fact it doesnt work correctly right out of the box....thats pretty infuriating The Cust Service was only willing to replace it with a "Reconditioned" unit after I payed full price for a new unit...no thanks, just credit my credit card.

product was a disappointment from the get-go. A 1/2 hour into the first movie I put in, it did the freezing thing. Sometimes it would jump ahead, sometimes it would continue to play and sometimes it would start from the beginning...or go to the main menu. I tried other discs but to no avail...it did it to the next 5 movies I tried. With that, I proceeded to box it up and shipped it back the next day. I figured it must have gotten damaged during shipping...but now that I see reviews from other people saying they had the same exact problemm, it is obviously a design flaw and defect from Philips

Philips 32" plasma flat screen....works perfectly...its a shame they cant design a DVD player with the same flawlessness. Sony DVD player (my previous player) was hassle-free since 1999

Strength:

Picture Quality, Audio, Video adjustments. For me, price.

Weakness:

Terrible display on the front of the unit. It is essentially useless.

I love the performance of the Q50. I have had very few problems with pauses. Some DVD's seem to be more problematic than others. Both interlaced and prog. scan are amazing. Mine is hooked up to a Sanyo Z1 front projector via the prog. scan output. There are several audio and video adjustments that really come in handy. The DCDi makes a huge difference. I can't possibly beleive my image could be any better.

DVD momentary pause CD Functionality Remote

Simply put I am very disappointed in this unit. It has an awful tendency to momentarily pause while playing DVDs. For any price point this is totally unacceptable. Its spec sheet reads like a wish list for audio/videophiles but never comes close to the promised performance envelope. The control panel is spartan and the remote does not compensate for it. It lacks a proper display for chapter and timing accuracy. As a CD player it is completely useless, it does not allow for the repetition of individual tracks or entire disks. It can not be programmed to do so either. Over all a very this is a limited and faulty unit. DVD players have come along way in the last few months and now offer either SACD or DVD-A capability plus DVD-R/W playback. I can not fault this unit for this lack of features but at its price point it should have at least offered SACD.

Weakness:

The remote is not backlit and does not have an eject button. Think my old sony remote was easier to access speed options.

I recently purchased a 36" HiDef Panasonic and have been itching to see how good a pic can get it and so after some time consuming internet research I have been looking at progressive players with the infamous Faroudja microprocessor. I ended up with a terrific bargain on the Q50 on Ebay. Okay, paranoid about getting one that freezes I popped it out of the box and begain checking it out by running it almost continuou over the weekend...and no freezing on this one and it does not have the firmware upgrade. I called Ebay and requested the upgrade anyway, and they said they would send it out right away. I one of my personal tests was to compare it to my sony S550D by constantly switching cable back and forth between players and freezing so I could see the difference. The difference was quite amazing...my old player (sony) which I thought was pretty good, now looked muddy when looking at closeups of peoples faces and other scenes showing details. With the Q50, the details were quite clear, and really quite amazing. Mind you, this is just my crude eyeball test and not a highly technical barrage of scientific lab tests. Also remember I only compared it to a non progressive scan dvd player without that Faroudja chip. Anyway, when all was done, I feel pretty good about my choice in getting this player. Feel kinda guilty deserting my old faithful sony player, but can't see a reason to ever hook it up again.

Strength:

Great picture, sound quality and features for the price.

Weakness:

Brief image freezes.

My confessional is a s follows: I have my week old Q50 connected to an NAD receiver. Using the interlaced component video out. Viewing on a Panasonic plasma screen. The picture quality is astounding. The sound from a CD-r is also exeptional. Having had bad luck with a mid-price Sony player (it was a lemon–stopped working properly after the warranty expired. Service center wanted $125.00 to fix), I decided to stay clear of the brand. Given that we live in a disposable society, my requirements were: pay as little as possible, to get the most bang for my buck. (Was tempted by an RCA from Radio Shack for $150, but decided against it.) Realised that I'd have to spend a bit more (around $300), to get the features I wanted, and that it had to perform well with the equipment I own. I was swayed by the Q50's looks and impressive features, even though I had read a lot about the freezing problems on this model. Sure enough, it has frozen once since I installed it, and have called Philips to receive the firmware upgrade. We'll see if this actually works. I can see why some people may find it enfurating to experience the freeze-flaw. Specially if it happens several times during the course of a movie. Although this is clearly a manufacturing defect, I'm not ready to walk away from the unit – yet. If the freezing persists after the upgrade, I may consider returning it. But for the same price, I may have a hard time finding a replacement.

Strength:

Solid build and feel. Awesome picture. Good remote.

Weakness:

None so far (knock on wood).

I must be one of the lucky ones. This unit was a demo which I purchased from Audio Advisor and I gotta say this thing is awesome! (It is replacing a Toshiba Prog player which I HATE.) So far, the only glitch on the Philips was its temporary refusal to play The Bourne Identity. Then again, maybe it was just showing some taste.

Weakness:

Random Freezing - This is not just a minor nuisance, THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW!

I purchased a DVDQ50AT in September 2002. The DVD player is connected via component video to a Sony KV32XBR400 television with Hi-Scan 1080i capability. The progressive-scan output from the DVDQ50 generates an incredible picture on the Sony XBR TV, ONLY when the DVD player is operating correctly. Unfortunately, random (0.5 to 1.0 second) picture freezes occur while playing standard DVDs on the DVDQ50. This normally occurs once or twice during a movie. After freezing the movie restarts by itself. The freezing problem appears to be a throughput limitation. This is not just a minor nuisance, THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW! I received and installed Philips' software update, which didn't fix the random freezing problem. Philips then replaced the DVD player and the new player has the same problem! I'm returning this player to Philips also. Every time I watch a DVD on this player I'm anticipating when the next freeze will occur, this hardly makes for an enjoyable viewing experience. The picture quality does not begin to make up for this annoyance. The DVD player's performance is completely unacceptable (at any price). My recommendation: Don't purchase a DVDQ50AT unless Philips fixes this serious problem.

Strength:

unit is very lite good for throwing out the window or against a wall.

Weakness:

Everything

If you want to give yourself a bunch of headaches buy this player, if you don't want any headaches buy some other manufactures player take you pick Sony, panasonic, Toshiba, Etc. Yeah the picture is great when it works. I had this unit for 6 months and even with the firmware upgrade to 4.15i it still freezes randomly. Also overall operation is clunky and slow. Menus are really cheap and confusing and before I did the firmware upgrade the where cockeyed on the screen. Front panels display is stupid. Remote is cheap plastic buttons unit has the feel of a $99.00 player. I purchase this player for the DCDI processing baloney but really I don't see much of a difference. Let's face it this a lemon.
