Strength:

Reads CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, VideoCD

Weakness:

Freezes on some movies at layer switch

Nice Player, every feature button on the remote just brings up the main menu on the correct pull down list. Very nice to be able to record movies on the PC and play them on this player.
The most agrivationg problem is the layer switch freeze up.
So far the list of movies that hang include:
Teaching Ms Tingle
The Generals Dughter
Virus
American Pie
Mystery Men

To get the movie going again you have to go to the chapte selection and the go to a place before the freee, then ff through the layer switch. ARGH!

Calling tech support gets you the answer "Send it in for factory service" I bought this player because I thought this kind of thing could be fixed with an upgrade CD that I load. They don't even acknowledge the problem, so what are they going to fix? I have traded email with others that have the same trouble. It is not my player, but the firmware. I know of one person even sent it in and it came back just as it was before, they took it back to the store and bought a new player.
I want to keep this player so I sure hope they fix the problem.

Strength:

Great price, lots of options

Weakness:

freezes

I did a lot of research and felt that the Philips was the best DVD player for the price, except for the problem of freezing during a movie. This problem began on the second movie I watched. Why is Philips selling a DVD player that needs an upgrade as soon as you hook it up? I'm very disappointed.

Hello
Casual Listener

Strength:

Cheap with many functions, can read CDR and CDRW (also DVD RAM - not tested)!! Upgradable by software on CD !!

Weakness:

On screen control

I got it at bid.com (not ubid.com) and it is a less well know site. This is why I only pay $192 (free shipping !!). The overall video and audio quality is as good as other DVD players in the same price range. The only problem is the on screen control !! For example: to move forward 2x 4x on VCD, you can not use the button on the remote. You need to press on ON SCREEN MENU, then press the right arrow buttons several times to get the the tiny fastward icon. To choose 2x, press down array 1 times, for 4x, press down arrow 2 times. I hope they could improve it on the next s/w upgrade. No far, there is no promise on any upgrade. I hope it is not just a marketing lie. We will see.

The on screen icons are too small even on my 36" Sony TV. I almost have to put my nose on the TV screen to see the icon picture !!

If you know anyway to make it multi-code free. Please kindly let me know. I know you could do it in the previous model.

Strength:

cheap

Weakness:

Will not play Silver DVD's horrible remote noisy slow bad customer support

Machine suddenly stopped playing video Cd's and Silver DVD's. Phoned Phillips for firmware upgrade about a year ago and never received it. Finally found a authorized repair center to fix at my cost and they could't fix it either. Have to make sure I rent gold DVD's now and I'll never get to watch my Holy Grail DVD. Still freezes during layer change.

I agree with the post below. These players have been panned because of a regrettable software error that has been fixed. The player works wornderfully after the software upgrade. I don't believe you could find a player of this quality, with component outs, dual laser, etc. etc. for less than $300. I am glad so many returned it, so that I was able to pick it cheap from ubid.

Strength:

Good picture quality, above average Dolby Digital sound, exceptional 2 channel audio from CD's, the 3D "True Surround" from just two speakers actually works

Weakness:

Not the best picture I've seen from DVD, still think it lacks a little in features and looks a bit "plasticy"

Ok, I've learned my lesson and everyone should take these words of wisdom to heart- never write a review when you are upset and frustrated with a product. I'd like to apologize to everyone on this site for making such hasty comments about this product on my last review (the one right below this one). Now that I've cooled off, I'd like to take the time to write a better and more accurate review of this product.

Obviously, I decided to keep this player. I took a day off and went to audition the players listed above at my local hi-fi shop. I got to talking to the salesperson and they also sell Philips DVD players. He told me that sometime, during shipping, the dual laser system can get jarred around and during initial set-up, the player may not "focus" properly. While I liked all of the players I listed, I decided to give the Philips one last try. I'm glad I did.

I went home, unplugged the machine and started the set-up process again. Sure enough, things seem to be working fine. The audio is there in all channels and it's playing CD's now without a glitch.

The picture is not as good as some players I've seen, but I think some of that is do to my S-video connection (I'm using the supplied cord and I think a nice Monster Cable connection would probably help a lot).

The 5.1 surround audio is very crisp, clean, and detailed for a player I only paid $200 (delivered) for. The CD audio is on par with $750 players in my opinion. While not the equal to my CD transport/outboard D.A.C set-up ($1250 retail) when it comes to detail and soundstage, it is definitely a player that I feel most audiophiles who can't spend $10,000 on a digital front-end would feel musical.

Overall, it's a good player even for its retail of $399.00. If you can get it for the price I paid, don't hesitate. If you have problems as I did initially, re-set it and give it another chance. You'll be glad in knowing you didn't fork out $1000 for a DVD player that, in a year or two, will likely be obsolete with the advances in technology.

Excellent product for the price...actually retails somewhere in the neighborhood of $300-$400, but if you look it the right places you can get it for $249.95 like I did...email for info. Great starter unit...(my first console unit)...
