I''ve had the same problems as many of the other reviewers. However, I spoke with customer service at Philips recently, and the rep said to try plugging the unit directly into a wall outlet, and not a power strip. She said the unit needed more power than a strip can provide. Something about the ohms. Unplug it over night, then plug in into the wall outlet. Mine seems to work better now. Hope this helps.

Strength:

The five (5) disc changer and CD audio capabilities are the only strengths.

Weakness:

The quality control issues all involve poor playback quality, loud noise and slow response. This is a slow machine that begins to play with video distortions within an hour of viewing the DVD. Documentation on the Philips web site is non-existent for this model. I wonder about the omission.

The Philips DVD782c DVD CD player was a wonderful gift but falls quite short of the quality mark. I have used this product a total of 10 hours and I have the very same issues as many of the reviewers on this web page; namely skipping, video distortion and loud motor vibration. The most recent DVD purchased will not even play beyond the previews section of the disc. The DVD 5 player changer is a wonderful convenience, if it only worked. This machine skips and moves the DVDs slowly. The remote unit has a slow response time. The color of the introduction changes from blue to a rust color about 30% of the time requiring the unplugging of the power cord from the electrical outlet for a reset. The documentation is fair with a weak troubleshooting section. Avoid this particular model if quality is an issue with your electronic purchase.

Strength:

THIS SYSTEM OFFERS A DECENT RECIEVER.

Weakness:

THE 782C DVD PLAYER STINKS. IT RESPONDS SLOW TO COMMANDS AND WON''T PLAY MOVIES THAT CONTAIN NEW TECHNOLOGY AND/OR REFINEMENTS.

PHILIPS MX995D HOME THEATRE SYSTEM. IF YOU ENJOY WATCHING DISNEY DVD MOVIES,LIKE ATLANTIS, DON''T PURCHASE THIS PACKAGE.THE DVD PLAYER (782C) WON''T PROCESS THE DATA FROM NEWLY RELEASED DISNEY FEATURES.TRY TELLING THIS TO YOUR 4 YEAR OLD WHEN HIS BIRTHDAY PRESENT DOESN''T PLAY. BETTER YET, EXPLAIN TO THE VIDEO STORE WHY YOU WOULD LIKE A REFUND OR EXCHANGE. I''M RETURNING THIS PRODUCT TOMORROW. I''M DISAPOINTED THAT PHILIPS WOULD TARNESS A FAIR REPUTATION BY PEDDLING OFF THEIR OUTDATED COMPONENT PARTS IN A PACKAGE DEAL.

Strength:

It was free. Looked good. Sounded great.

Weakness:

Only worked for 20 min before it smoked.

I work for Philips. I got this as a Christmas gift from philips, i thought ok this is cool to bad they didn't send the Q-50. One of my co-workers got the same model, he hooked it up, it didn't work at all. I hooked mine up figured i would try it out. It was great, better than the Toshiba i was using. After 20 min it started skipping and got real slow, i tried another DVD same thing. I went to take the movie out and got that familiar whiff of burnt electronics. Now they are sending out a new one but i am wondering how many of theses things i may have to go thru to get a good one...... If someone wants to give one to you take it, but if you are spending your hard earned cash get the Q-50AT.

Plays for a short time(if you're lucky)

I have tried four different units and not one of them has worked. Philips denies any reported problems or defects which I find impossible to beleive, unless they just haven't sold many of this model. The movie will play for a while then begin to skip or stop completely. The last one I tried played an entire disc with no trouble but since then it won't load any discs at all. The electronic burn smell is present.

I would not but this model for $5.00.

Strength:

5 disc changer. Plays Dolby Digital and DTS and TruSurround. Has all applicable outputs.

Weakness:

Slow to respond. Locks up. Only plays 2 formats. Display and remote are week,

This product stinks. It is slow to react to commands, the tray rotates poorly, only plays DVD and Cd format. On the first day it started locking up on movies and wouldn't eject or power off. Needless to say I took it back.

Strength:

It was a nice gift

Weakness:

Doesn't work

This is an update to my previous review. I got a replacement dvd player due to the first one not working. Same issues as everyone else, burning smell, starts to skip after about 45mins to an hour then stops. As my boss had great intensions giving this as a Christmas gift, i can not attempt to try another one of these units.

Bottom line.........PHILIPS DOES HAVE SOME GOOD PRODUCTS
just stay away from this model. Look at some of the higher end products. I will be going for the Q-50 or the 972CH.

Damn thing don't work

First of all it takes ~3 minutes to recognize the disc, either audio or dvd. About an hour into the movie, there is image skipping and then complete failure. The burning smell leads me to belive it is a cooling issue. It does not work.

This could have been because I had a VCR on top of it, but I'm still taking it back.

Everything

Dec. 2001 Boy do we feel better that we are not alone. Within 5 minutes of playing a dvd we could smell a burning smell and a vibrating noise and the picture and sound started to skip and progressively got worse with time. I'm disappointed with the Philips Corp. after speaking with their customer service that they lead me to beleive that this was a rare instance. I will not be replacing this dvd player with another philips product.
