Strength:

good set of featurs, easy to drive from the remote. image quality is excelent as is the sound, over all a good effort from Philips.

Weakness:

Laser unit it seems is the only real major draw back, it would seem they usualy last no more than a few '000hrs, so don't use it as your primary CD player is my two cents. It can also be very fussy about CDR media, particularly track change, may introduce noise or click when laser begins to fail.

The Philips 951/751 with DTS decoder buit in, MPEG I, MPEG II, digital out, optical out as well as Cr Cb Y (RGB) and S-video, good features, but poor laser, strugles with CDR. excelent picture stability and colour, system wake up time not bad for the units age, layer change is quite slow 1/8 to 1/4 second ie. a notable pause, DVD compatibility is great, can easily be remote hacked for region free play back (but not properly with shiped remote), no issues on RCE encoded discs yet found. mechanics are a little noisy but all in all a good featured player.

Strength:

Great sound inc. CDs, lot of options, no skipping.

Weakness:

Power switch, "dumb" tray, fake jog!

This is for the 951 - Well for what I paid for it - WOW! Everything but the progressive scan (kitchen sink?) which I don't need yet anyway. Oh yah, no mp3 either. But it does have zoom, mult. angles, etc., the stuff I don't use very much!!:) Nice picture. Great sound (inc. CDs'). No skipping or delays. Changing layers only takes a second or two. Comprhensive remote. Nitpicks: If you turn it off at the unit you can't turn it on with the remote. The unit has to read b-4 the tray open command works (Very irritating!). The manual isn't as in-depth as it should be. And the "jog dial" is only on the unit - it's a fake for sales purposes!! Apart from that, super price aside, it's a graet unit that I'll probably keep until it dies (hopefully, a long time!).

Strength:

Great picture qualitity, Tons of bells and whistles, On-board decoder.

Weakness:

None observed so far

This review is for the Philips DVD951AT. So far this has been a real bargin. All kinds of programing for this equipment including speaker control, contrast and brightness, multiple angles, zoom, search etc, etc. Impossible to match at twice the price and is missing only Progressive scan.

Strength:

Sophisticated remote control, great picture and sound.

Weakness:

Doesn't play most of Video CD formats in color.

I bought a refurbished unit. I was very satisfied with the performance and all its features. The picture and sounds are perfect. Unfortunately I had to return it back to store because it play in color Video CD 2.0 only. I own very many Video CDs 1.0 and 1.5 versions and it shows them in b/w format only. But if you care of DVD movies I would highly recommend to take a look on it. If you need the player w/o special features but playing EVERYTHING consider cheaper GE 1101P.
