Strength:

Amazing picture and sound.

Weakness:

Skips and pixelizes some DVDs. Not sure if it is a overly sensitive player or defective. Poor documentation.

I am using the component video(480i) with amazing results. The picture has real depth, excellent detail and color. The picture in Jurassic is awesome. I compared the picture with my old player(JVC 501) and it is easy to see the difference in the picture.

Sound is also very good. DTS and Dolby Digital both produce great surround sound. CD and MP3 have played flawless.

The one problem I have been experiencing is skipping. My old
player never skipped. This player has skipped on several DVDs and seems to get lost after skipping. At one point the audio had lost sync with the video and the actors mouths would open before the sound came out. Anyone else have these problems. I am sending it back to B&H. Hope to get one that plays well. I am giving less than perfect score because of this problem.

Strength:

12 bit video dacs, great movie audio, many video filter controls, fast layer changes, etc..
etc..unit optimized for video.

Weakness:

picture does shift to the left slightly; puzzling how they let that through.

I love this machine. I am playing it into a Toshiba 65H80.
I can only say that in my estimation PS mode on this macine is flawless enough for me. Very low noise, beatiful color, extended depth over IL mode , vertually no movement artifacts, etc.
One thing to remember when switching between interlaced and progressive modes,is that (for HDTV), the change causes the set to use a different convergence grid internally. If the convergence is off in direct mode ( PS pass through) then the picture can look grainy of out of focus. In other words make sure the convergenge is spot on first. I can tell you if you own a 65H80 chances are it is not.
I would put this unit on par with the Denon 2800 w/o the chroma bug.

This is a follow my recent review: I got the RP56 model for $250 (mfg: Aug 2001; with the Sage/Faroudja chip?) just to compare with the RP91. After 15 min. auditioning, the RP56 is going back for sure. The picture and sound quality of the RP91 totally justify the price different.

Strength:

Great Features and (mainly) Great Picture quality

Weakness:

No zoom

My main opinion here is to warn folks to not purchase from the vendor Crazy Eddie. Read below:

I ordered a Panasonic DVD-RP91 from them. I received the unit and it is obvious that someone else had opened the box. I finally connect it up to my TV and I get these terrible bands going accross the screen. I bring it in to my authorized Panasonic dealer just to see if there is a problem with the unit and they say, guess what: THIS IS A FACTORY REFURBISHED UNIT! I pay full price ($440) and Crazy Eddies sends me a refurbished unit. I had heard bad things about them in the past, but figured I would try and give them a chance (everyone deserves a second chance) and look what I get. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM! This is what they got in trouble for the first time around when they had stores here in New York! Now they won't take it back without charging me for the return shipping PLUS a 15% restocking fee!

The unit is beautiful and I still plan to order it from someone else, because after doing research for over 2 months, no other unit has the feature set that this unit has (CD, DVD, VCD, MP3, etc) but comparing to another unit that I have also doesn't have the chroma bug - which really makes a difference in the quality of the picture! Just avoid Crazy Eddies online store!

Strength:

progressive mode picture quality, nice clean sound, gold- finish RCA connectors, quiet operation, plays everything!

Weakness:

takes time to load and recognize media type; slow skipping chapters; some chattering sound coming from the unit when playing CDs; video is off-center, shifted to the left; remote buttons seem cluttered.

This unit produces no noticeable chroma bug, red streaks, or artifacts. It's very quiet when playing DVDs and the picture quality appears very smooth and detailed in progressive mode. The blacks are deep and colors are vibrant. 4:3 video can be scaled to 16:9 with appropriate black bars around it. Surround sound is above average and can accept either coaxial or optical. You can also bypass the internal decoders and feed DD/DTS bitstream to an external pre-amp/receiver. For DVD Audio, you will need 5 analog cables plus the subwoofer. Your receiver should already have 6 external analog inputs and must be able to lock onto signals with sampling rates of 96KHz or higher. While playing one of my store bought CDs, I did notice a chattering sound inside the drive bay. It sounded like the laser head was bouncing off the CD surface! My MP3s played flawlessly except on occassions where the unit did not recognize the disc that I have inserted.

Gripe List:
1. remove copyrights from DVD Audio disc so that we can enjoy the music in its puress digital format.
2. bass management for DVD Audio is a non-issue for me since all my speakers are capable of full-range.
3. have a customizable MP3 play list that shows the artist name and title track.
4. since I can't afford a $4000 DVD-RAM burner, I don't have any use for this.

I whole heartedly recommend this unit if you are in the market for a progressive-scan player that has it all including DVD Audio. Otherwise, wait until more DVD players come out with better de-interlacers such as Silicon Image or Faroudja.

Strength:

Everybody says it is best bang for buck

Weakness:

It is real light in weight, but that's probably not a
negative thing!

Everyone says it's best bang for buck available today in
terms of progressive plus DVD-A. Got it today and connected
it to system but haven't had much chance to review.
Since I wanted it for a REAL low price, used pricegrabber.com.
Found a few no-name mailorder places for under ecost's $419
(plus shipping). Ordered from no-name called buydig.com in
New York and heldbreath waiting for it (I am in California).
Now that it arrived, I'm a happy camper.

Great all-around performer, best bang for the buck and I bet it's much better than the upcoming Toshibas SD4700/5700.

I've been using this DVD player with an RCA 38310. This is a much better improvement since hte 38310 warps the picture a little when it zooms in. The Panasonic's zoom is better and it can detect what zoom to use on more difficult discs (such as Grosse Pointe Blank). I say it's difficult because it's not in a 16:9 format, but the player cuts off a small amount on the top and bottom to fit a 16:9 screen.

Also, I just bought a Philips Pronto and I'm happy that this player has discrete power codes. I'm about to buy a new VCR and Receiver to get discrete codes for them too since my current ones don't support them.

Strength:

Line doubler, picture quality.

Weakness:

None yet.

I was really interested in buying the Denon DVD-2800 when it first came out. After seeing it had problems and they recalled units to put the green dot on the back to signify the fix, I decided to wait for the next best thing. Well its here. The Panasonic DVD-RP91K. I've found it to be the best player in the the $1000 and under market. After seeing reviews of this player I gave it the rundown and compared it to the Pioneer and Denon which were my other 2 favorites. I'm not going to go into technicalites I'm going to make this review short and sweet. I can't wait to view it in progressive as I haven't bought my Pioneer Elite 510 yet. For $436 from Beachcamera.com, it beats players twice and three times as much. Game over. The Panasonic DVD-RP91K is a winner.
