Strength:

Panasonic Brand, Build Quality, Features, Picture Quality, Progressive Scan, All in Black.

Weakness:

Remote takes a little getting use to, especially the Enter Button.

I quickly purchsed the RP91K when Crutchfield was offering it over 200-300 dollars cheaper than other retailers. I am so glad I did. It took my awhile to write a review because I wanted to test just about my entire DVD library collection with it (over 530 titles). It is an amazing piece of machine. The build is strong and heavy, the picture quality is beautiful, high in detail and true color/flesh tones. It also comes with options to "optimize/tailor" your viewing. Many, many options. I have it connected to a Samsung 26" Widescreen HD and a Panasonic 30" Widescreen HD. Both calibrated with Video Essentials and AVIA. This players features and it play back strengths are amazing. Another fine job Panasonic has done.

Strength:

Audio/Video Quality

Weakness:

It worked for about 2 years then does not work anymore..... =(

I enjoyed this DVD player for about 2 years, but it stopped working after that. Kindof sad for a product of this price range. The audio quality is excellent and so is the video quality. One thing I didn't like was that it was very slow loading and playing DVD/CD's.. I cannot recommend this product, because I feel the quality does not justify the price. Also, the warranty should be better.

Strength:

No chroma bug. Good scaling for my Elite HD610

Weakness:

Construction Failed less than two years after purchase.

I purchased the RP91 after much research on this other audio/video sites. I was moving from a Marantz non-progressive to this unit for my Pioneer Elite HD610. Up until this month I was very happy with the player's audio and video performance. This month, only 22 months from purchase, it started freezing up after an hour or so of play. It is now no longer usable and out of warranty. I should have purchased the extended warranty.

i'm really happy with the dvd player, it's got a lot of features i've never seen before compared to the previous dvd players i've bought, it's got really good sound when playing dvd-audio, big difference between that then audio cd's, i like the feature cd text, when i play audio cd's with cd text, the artist and name of song scolls through the display screen.

Weakness:

Needs to be a bit more solid Setup Menus could be better

90% of the people who call themselves Audiophiles on this site know very little, please post your qualifications correctly as this site is a great reference for those who need help. This is my 5th unit and my second from Panasonic. The video quality in very good and with the iScan it is incredible. The bugs listed by many people are either a non issue or go away completely since I am using an external line processor. The setup menu and direct access to menu functions could be better but it is not that bad. The DVD audio sounds great but in a multichannel mode it looses all the soundstage and definition. DVD Audio in stereo is impressive and is very well defined but a bit lacking compared to SACD. I use my DAC in my preamp for DVD Video so I cannot comment on that aspect of this unit. Burn in time was about twenty hours and the flatness of the picture went away completely the audio also opened up a bit. This unit is a great deal even at retail prices and somehow Panasonic always comes out on top of the game when it comes to Video. Strength:

video resolution and color/black fidelity. Decently scales old (non-anamorphic) DVDs

Weakness:

deinterlacer good, but could be better.

I settled on this player for the video performance (no chroma bug) and the ability to scale non-anamorphic DVDs in progressive scan mode (my TV doesn't allow scaling in 480p mode). I give it 4 stars only because the deinterlacing performance can be better, but I normally have to look for this problem to see it.

Strength:

Everything.

Weakness:

Tray a bit flimsy if that's important.

Spectacular product. There have been enough technical reviews so I just want to say that this is probably the best video/audio source I've owned besides my JA Michell Gyrodec turntable. Up to this point I maintained that a good turntable playing decently recorded vinyl is the best audio source available. This unit has changed that. I own equipment built by one of the best audio craftsman in the world, Don Morrisson (check his Elad and 1.8 speakers on this site) and am speaking from experience. The RP91 playing DVD audio sounds better than my JA Michell. With CDs it sounds about as good, though the soundstage is not as open. However, I'm comparing with a $6000CAD turntable. All you DAC owners out there should scrap them (listen up MSB Link DAC owners) get rid of your CD players and start buying DVD audio players and discs so we can finally dig the grave of vinyl and CDs. If people start buying DVD audio it should spur the industry to step up the production of titles. We don't need 4 or more mediums out there (including SACD). It's just a cash grab for the corporations and the consumer always loses when he/she has to switch over to another medium from the one that has gone obsolete. My only complaint is that the tray is a bit flimsy on the RP91. But who cares? It's the software that's important isn't it? The laser life is also important but for a few hundred bucks a new player is available. It's at least that for a decent cartridge or CD player. Good work Panasonic. I would also like to say I'm not an audiophile. I was fortunate and found good prices on some excellent used equipment. A decent system can be assembled for less dollars then I spent if someone shops carefully. I love music and that love has been completely rekindled by this product. (paid $370US)

While the Panasonic RP91K is great for the price (and I''m glad I bought it), I''ve noticed a few video glitches on some DVD discs. Some discs will start to show a break-up of the image (pixellation) and either freeze momentarily (Evil Dead, Book of the Dead, near end--sorry, didn''t note Chapter No. etc.) or even freeze up the player altogether (X-Files Season 4, last 2 episodes of season). I''ve also noticed a pausing of the audio here and there on End of Days. NONE OF THESE PROBLEMS occur when I use my Sony DVP-S530D DVD player (which does not have progressive scan). On the RP91, when I turn progressive scan off, some of these problems do not occur. I''ve used a friend''s DVDs of the same movie and the same thing happens, specially the video problem. If anyone else has experienced this, I''d like to hear about it, especially if the source of the problem is known. (I''m using this with a Denon AVR 3802 receiver and a Mitsubishi 65''inch HDTV-ready widescreen TV)

I love this player. It looks great, don''t know why people are complaining about the remote, works fine for me. The picture is awesome, I''m using component cables. DVD Audio support is great, and I''ve had no problems so far, had it about a month.
