Strength:

The Remaster feature, and the Audio only are great, and Dvd audio for this price is awesome. The on board decoder is good too, much better than the decoder in my sony receiver.

Weakness:

If i had to gripe about something with this machine it would probably be the cheesy mirrored front, but i'm getting pretty picky at thsi point.

I've been looking for a new DVD player for quite some time, but couldn't find one with all the features i wanted for the price i was willing to pay. When the Toshiba DVD-4800 came in, i was immediately drawn to it, but when this beauty was sitting on the shelf next to it, i finally made up my mind. The sound from this player is great, i use this as a cd player in my home theater, and for a DVD player playing cd's, the sound quality is excellent. The audio only feature is great, as it drastically improves the sound quality this puts out. The other feature i love is the Re-master feature that bumps up the bitrate so it sounds better. All in all i'm very impressed with this player, i would recommend it to anyone looking for a good middle of the road Dvd player loaded with features.

Strength:

inexpensive, compact, lot of features...

Weakness:

can't adjust black level during progressive mode; can't get the blacker than black setting

hey guys, i bought the RP82 based on the 2003 DVD-shootout result. in fact, i learnt a lot from its previous benchmarking on progressive DVD player and therefore once i knew that this machine got their recommendation, i rushed to get one home. the first impression i have on the machine was "how could panasonic did it?" it's light weight, compact in size and... inexpensive! i couldn't wait to test it with my projector on 100" screen. i did the run-in for aroung 3 hrs just to play some DVDs without viewing. BUT when i firstly tested it with the STARWAR 2, i was not overwhelmed with its picture quality as comparing to my skyworth 1050p (also based on the review from the shootout). my initial observation was lacking details on dark scenes. so i used my VIDEO ESSENTIAL DVD to calibrate its black level setting BUT found the machine couldn't give out a blacker than black bar under progressive mode. when i switched it to interlace mode, the problem is solved. however, even switching it from the progressive N, C1, C2 mode for different black levels, the machine still couldn't reveal the blacker than black bar. i hope mine is a defective one and i could have it fixed later. otherwise, i really doubt if the machine deserves such high score.

GENESIS [Faroudja DCDi] FL12200 de-interlacing DSP superchip. By the way... this chip sells for $28US IF you buy 10,000 or more. Correct 3-2 Chroma upsampling. Doesn't have the Chorma Bug. Twin laser pick up. Dts 5.1 channel audio out [.0025% THD] Stereo out. By the way.... the stereo is active all the time even when playing Dts. You can re-inforce the audio from the TV speakers. Optical/Coaxial out...S video out....High definition video component out. Overall.... a feature packed player and remote.

Weakness:

OK....THERE HAS TO BE ONE!!!!!! LET'S PICK THE REMOTE. IT'S SMALL......I DON'T CARE. IT'S BUILD IS LIGHT WEIGHT...I DON'T CARE. IT'S FEARTURE PACKED....I DO CARE. IT ONLY COSTS $11.24US TO REPLACE....I DO CARE. [see Panasonic US site]

WOW!!!.....WHAT A GEM OF A PLAYER. WOW!!!.....WHAT A FANTASTIC PICTURE. WOW!!!.....ALL THIS IN A CHEAPER PRICED PLAYER??? WOW!!! TWO VERY BIG POWERFUL THUMBS UP ON THIS MODEL FOLKS. THIS PLAYER WON THE 2003 WORLDWIDE DVD PLAYER BENCHMARK ratings!!! It beat out players that were costing 2X-10X as much in price!!.....WOW!!!! The rumour is that, this model is to be discountinued. WHY,WHY,WHY???CRY,CRY,CRY! [I hope I'm wrong]. My actual price was $340CAD. I bought this machine to replace a lemon DVD player by another maker[SEE BELOW]. Fool me once.....SLAP YOU. Fool me twice....SLAP ME. When I connected it to my XBR I was amazed at the picture quality when playing in EITHER 480interlaced OR 480progressive modes. I still haven't madeup my mind as to which mode to feed to my XBR. I haven't tested the 5.1 audio out features on this player as of yet. ONLY TIME WILL TELL IF THIS PLAYER WILL STANDUP TO IT'S ALREADY ESTABLISHED REPUTATION.

Strength:

Everything!

Weakness:

Bass is a bit weak. Remote control is plain, no match with that beauty! Somme inconsistencies in the brightness/darkness stability when in cinema mode (standard TV).

The first reason I purchased this DVD player was his look. I could not resist his appeal! The mirror effect and all those silveries are so beautiful it is like having been made by a true artist, a gifted designer loving things well-done and demonstrating a true sense of esthetics and taste: it is a real jewel! You will be proud to show it to your friends! The video quality is excellent, with darker and deeper and more detailed images than my 2 years older, but honest and nice-looking too JVC 703 DVD player. There is the progressive scan option that I did not test, since I do not have (yet!) an HDTV. What it does on a standard mode (on my good I'Art JVC 27 inches TV) is really of high standard. Menus are nice looking. There are some fine options like fast search (up to 200X), a zoom function that really helps to see Widesreens movies with a bigger (if not exactly Fullscreen) perspective, a dialogue enhancer button, 3 ways Cinema modes (video-for the sharpness level), and all the socketry including component video output as well as both coaxial and optical digital output! Amazing! But what interested me most is his audio qualities. Not only a good audio (16 bits) replay, not only the DVD-Audio option, but especially the so-called 'Re-master' option, emulating 24 bits/96K with 16 bits standard CDs by mathematical interpolations... Something find up to now only on $1,500 external converter!!! There is 3 ways to choose from that remaster function: 1-more details, 2-even more details, 3-and a 'richer' sound option (wich I prefer) that makes the thinness of some sounds disappear ( amust in the class of products!. I do not know how they can offer all that 'savoir-faire' for a so reanonnable price: thank you Panasonic for this magic! The results are a really (if subtle) clearer, cleaner and more detailed sound, that is driving you directly into the music. Compared to My Rotel 971, in my NAD C-350 Integrated Ampt, Linn Keosa speakers, with Prisma 8 speaker cables and Tara Labs Quantum CD interconnect cable system, the bass region is not as present or defined, neither the medium as dynamic and lively, but the way it presents music is of a mature and cultured (or intellectual/rational) style: relaxed, easy to understand and refined. The Rotel could looks younger in that view: more emotional, with more swing, the bass going deeper and more precisely into the beat (try some double-bass!)and the pulse of the melodies being more palpable. In fact: the Rotel is more musical. But it is double the price! I only heard 3 DVD-Audio (stero only): some old recordings (mostly classical: like Also Spracht Zarathoustra from Strauss), but the achievment is here: something like the 'thing itself', the full resolution of the music as it could have been recorded. On that aspect, anyway, the Rotel HDCD option can handle easily the comparison (or surpass it), because of its own qualities! But I can not see $399 canadian dollars spent better than here! A player for movies, music, hi-resolution music, and more musical ordinary musics... You can even just look at it and admire it in silence! A mid-fi achievment!

Strength:

great picture..great price..what more can you ask for?

Weakness:

remote kind of sucks...can't zoom in on progressive scan signals (not sure if this the tv or the player)

typically i dont post reviews, but i thought i should help out possible customers..got this DVD player because of its probably one of the best ones at its price point. i dont need the built in decoders, but the next model down RP-62 (while a very good dvd player) isnt as good as the RP-82. plus for $20 difference it was worth the extra cost. basically, this dvd player is pretty good. it has DCDi (although it isnt printed on the machine or in the manuals) i am upgrading from playing dvds on my playstation, so, this has been a huge upgrade..plus i am watching on a widescreen tv now.
