Strength:

Fantastic picture quality via the Sage chip; despite most people''s tastes, I actually think it looks good!

Weakness:

no coax output; suspect build quality; runs hot.

Despite the fact that this unit weighs less than my toaster, it''s been a great addition to my HT set-up. Picture is fantastic in progressive scan and I''ve had no problems playing any of the DVD''s that I''ve thrown into it. Since I got it free with my 47" Panny widescreen, you won''t hear a single complaint from me! Even if I had to pay for it, I honestly can''t see anyone complaining about this product given the sticker price on this unit.

Superb picture and sound.

Excellent DVD Player so far. Very sharp picture and great sound. I bought this at Best Buy for $115.00 as an open box unit. I have the Panasonic A110 which lasted about a year before giving me various problems. I''ve yet to use the progressive scan feature.

Strength:

Video Quality. Sound Quality. Ease of use. All around really great.

Weakness:

Construction, but hey, what do you want? This isn''t a Denon, or SD9200 Toshiba.. that weighs a ton...and cost $700.00 If you want DVD-Audio... get a Toshiba. Otherwise, this is perfection.

First off, if you go to best buy and get screwed, and then let it go, then you have no balls. This unit is superb! For $149 You can NOT go wrong... it rocks.

Weakness:

built cheap, poor customer service, even poorer service centers

I bought this player in August of 2001. Upon hooking the unit up I discovered the progressive scan feature was not working and immediately notified Best Buy. I was told it was not the DVD player but my TV, I accepted this answer (very stupid on my part) until I talked with a friend who happens to work at an A/V store. He said my TV should work with progressive scan. Off to Best Buy I went with dvd player in hand. After 45 minutes of arguing with the "kiddie" personnel who work at Best Buy, I coaxed them into hooking the player up to a high def TV. It didn''t work !!! After another 45 minutes of arguing with the kids, I was informed it was past my 30 day return period and it was my baby. More conversation with the kiddies (not one manager came to me directly to discuss the matter might I add) I informed them I would never shop at Best Buy again and was told, "GOOD". I shipped the unit off 7 weeks ago for repair, no help from Panasonic might I add, and still no DVD player. Spend the extra money and get a reputable player would be my advice, these things are built cheap and if it breaks down you''re SOL !!

Strength:

It produces an excellent picture when the progressive scan is turned on and using Tributaries Silver Sieries Component cables. It has that filter in it that nobody else has in their DVD players.

Weakness:

It is built very cheap(too much plastic and a thin tin frame) compared to my girlfriends Pioneer DV-333 which is built pretty solid. Only has an optical out and no coaxil digital out.

For my first DVD player it is pretty good but with some minor flaws. But it still beats any Sony product!

Strength:

Great picture.

Weakness:

Flimsy case construction.

A true bargain. It looks unbeilevable on my new Sony KV-36XBR450. I cannot beileve that people will post reviews about this product stating it is not a progressive scan product. One review I read quoted an article at Home theatre Mag as proof that this player was not Progressive (http://www.hometheatermag.com/showarchives.cgi?69). I read the article, and guess what - it did not mention the RP56 at all! I purchased this player after reading the article on progressive scan players at Home Theatre HiFi which mentions the player by name(http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_3/dvd-benchmark-progressive-shootout-2-8-2001.html). I just wish that these reviews would be moderated by someone who follows up on bogus claims - especially when the url listed is obvoiusly false.

Strength:

Picture quality, price, takes up less space than my old Panasonic DVD player.

Weakness:

None, so far.

I bought this DVD player so that I could actually watch movies in high definition on my new Panasonic CT-34WX50 TV. The picture in progressive scan is really outstanding. You can actually read the small print in the end credits of movies! At $230 it was a real steal. I had to really hunt to find a store that had one in stock. I paid more than that for my old Panasonic AU-120 DVD player a couple of years ago, an it didn''t have progressive scan or any of the other advanced features of the RP-56.

Strength:

Great picture quality, lots of user-selectable settings, good CDR/CDRW support.

Weakness:

Poor MP3 support, DTS output set to off out of the box (what''s up with that?)

I waited for quite awhile for the price of this player to dip a bit lower than $379CAD but just couldn''t hold out anymore. Great player for the money, especially when mated with a television that supports 480p. Although many reviews and reviewers have complained about the front panel being ugly I''d have to say it isn''t ugly, just a bit too busy.

Strength:

Good audio, video quality for the money.

Weakness:

Unusual menus; doesn't restart disk at last position unless a special button on remote is pressed before power down.

Generally a nice player for the money. No complaints about video or audio quality. Some menus/operations are counter-intuitive. Frustrating that it doesn't restart a disk at last viewed position unless you press a button on the remote called "play mode." (does that make any sense?) My Marantz player memorizes last position for up to 200 disks, even if they've been taken out of the player. (Of course that player is double the price.)

Strength:

Progressive Scan, Picture Quality, and MP3 Playability.

Weakness:

Some problems w/ MP3 discs, no backlit remote

I bought this product about a month ago from etronics (btw, they are very good at packaging products for shipping...) and have been relatively happy with the performance.

My previous player did not have progressive scan and I have a 51" panasonic 51HX41 HDTV - once I understood what progressive scan was, the jagged edges became unbearable. I had to have a progressive player.

On the picture quality front, the progressive image created by the player is excellent - I have to strain real hard in order to find any artifacts or jagged lines. I am quite happy with the image quality.

On the downside, it doesn't play all my mp3 discs and there are no menus for song titles, etc. - you go by track number. Quite useless if your aim is to use the player as an mp3 player.
