I am a newbie to the DVD world but very pleased with the Panny so far. I haven't had any problems with lip synch or discs not playing, etc. , yet.

Strength:

picture quality, black level control, passes dts signal

Weakness:

possibly the lack of an internal dd/dts decoder, and no zoom control

I bought this unit from netmarket for $249 and couldn't be happier. The picture is crystal clear with vivid color when the program calls for it. Not artificially "pumped-up" but very natural looking. Among the best I've seen. Hook-up is staight forward with a choice of 3 separate component, S-video or regular 75 ohm video cable with RCA's. Audio outputs include optical or digital coax for hookup to an external decoder. The 5.1 surround it passes is superb. It loads fast and accesses tracks quickly as well. It has more features than I'll probably ever use like programming scene/tracks, bookmarks, etc. Even the remote was satisfactory. Not back-lit, but for the price, so what. No zoom control, but I feel that's just a gimmick anyway and don't miss it. Overall an excellent value and a definite best buy for someone looking for their first player. It's got what you need.

Strength:

Excellent load times. Also, it's quiet. And I've yet to find a DVD that it has problems with.

Weakness:

No zoom. Weak remote.

I highly recommend this player. A great player at entry-level price.

Strength:

Incredible Price ($199), Component Video, DTS

Weakness:

Remote sticks, but I've got a 15-1994 anyway.

What can I say it's just a great DVD player for the money. Picture is fantastic. My model was a Nov. 1999 model so I can't comment on earlier problems.

Strength:

dts

Weakness:

lack of frills

I checked out many of the reviews posted here, then went on a search of e-bay. I bought this unit used, and have had no trouble whatsoever. It doesn't have a lot of extra features, but I don't know if I'd use them anyway.

With the advent of DTS encoded music DVD's, I wouldn't recommend buying anything without 5.1 and DTS capability.

I run this via optical cable to a Yamaha RX-V595a and Definitive Technology BP8's and am very happy. Rear speakers are cheap, but not a significant part of the experience.

Strength:

Works well, fast access, set-it-and-forget-it configuration, great CD sound

Weakness:

None found yet.

The Panasonic A-120U is very affordable and yet performs quite well. I've had zero problems playing CDs or DVDs, including some quite intricate Criterion DVDs. (And I own a Matrix DVD.) It plays gold Mobile Fidelity CDs well too; I have not tried it with recordables yet.

I bought this over similar models because of the better access speed and the very low price (I paid around $200). It performs exactly as expected, including on DTS DVDs (played through my Denon AVR-3300 with Definitive Tech bipolars, etc.)

The biggest surprise was that Elton John's Funeral for a Friend (off of Yellow Brick Road), MoFi version, sounds BETTER than off of my Denon CD player! This may not be entirely fair; the A-120U is hooked up through an optical connector, while the Denon CD player is using Monster Interlink 500 analog cables, but it still surprised me.

Strength:

Great price, very good build quality, all the necessary output capabilities (coax, digital, S-video, component), reads DD and DTS, decent remote. All-around performer!

Weakness:

Lacks a zoom feature. Buttons on remote are kind of small and lack backlighting.

This is an excellent product for the money! I paid $249 for mine 9 months ago, and I would not consider changing it for anything on the market today. OK, welll maybe I'd trade it for a progressive scan capable player, but since my monitor wouldn't know what to do with a prog scan signal anyway, that's a few years off. This player has been able to play absolutely everything I've given it, with only a select few errors, which were always solved by cleaning the disc. The player has everything a basic to mid-level home theater system needs.

easy menu system, price, features

Weakness:

purchased based upon reviews here and i am not disappointed. for the money you can't beat it, paid $ 239 including all the promotions from panasonic. quality is first rate, no glitchs yet, have played about 22 disks so far. it was important to me that it plays flawlessly the scratched up dvd's from local rental play. thats why i didn't keep the sony. very easy to use, fast loading, hooked to a yahama 995, and klipsch speakers in my h.t. system.

Weakness:

s-video, compon. out

All in all, an excellent deal, I did alot of reading of various players, and searced locally and on the web for players. If you find a better player with more options and a better reliability rating than panasonic, buy it!
I've run several dvd's through it and have noticed no glitches, sounds like the fella a couple reviews down either got a bad egg or just doesnt like the player.
The only place that I've found cheaper players is wallmart, but I dont trust equipment bought there, and they dont have comp. out.
I give this unit 5 stars!

I paid 249.00 through crutchfield, who generally tend to be expensive, but on this unit they have a excellent deal.
