Strength:

customizable picture settings solid construction plethora of video outputs (composite,s-video,component) plethora of audio outputs(analog, optical, coaxial) Audio DACs - claims to be 192k/24bit (doesnt matter to my setup) progressive scan capability solid construction

Weakness:

no analog multichannel out (doesnt matter to my setup)

I bought this progressive scan DVD player of Onkyo to complement my Onkyo TX-SR700, and this DVD player delivers what it is supposed to - great movies, customizable picture settings, accurate music. The only thing that bothers me is the manual. i bought this DVD player in the belief that it has 192k/24bit digital to analog converters for all its channels and the manual says 96k/24bit DACs. anyway, since im using optical outputs, and the DACs of the main channel of the SR700 is 192k/24bit, it doesnt matter. I am proud to have gotten this model paired up with my reciever

I thought the Onkyo would be great because it so expensive versus my old Toshiba 1200 (which has DTS output problems with my rotel receiver- someone else had this problem. See toshiba 2800 dvd reviews). However, it has frozen up for a second on several brand new DVDs, and it isn't very heavy given the price. I was expecting more weight for the price, some real electronics. I now feel liked I paid just for the brand and not the quality, so I may return it. I don't know what else to buy because the 5 DVD Sony changer had poor sound, and the Toshiba had DTS output problems even if its sound was great. It's clear that all of these manufacturers have a long way to go. I may return mine and spend far less since it seems that spending extra on DVD players doesn't get you anywhere in an immature market. Progressive scan may be a waste too, according to a salesman I talked to at a hi-fi store. If you wait a few years and buy an HDTV capable TV (as opposed to HDTV ready), you may not need progressive scan to double the lines for you; the HDTV will do it.

I have a request of any owner of this model. When everything is completely quiet in your listening area, with no sound coming from your t.v. or speakers, put your ear next to the disc tray. While a dvd or cd is playing, you should hear the whirring sound of the disc spinning. Along with this, I also hear a very slight, but audible, bumping sound as well. Does anyone else hear this? I realize this is no big deal, but was just curious if anyone else has heard this. Everything must be pretty much silent in your room and your ear right next to the disc tray to hear this. It seems to do it more on cd's than dvd's. Thanks.
