    Strength:

Vibrant colors, black level control, lovely sound rivalling dedicated cd players.

    Weakness:

RCE Decoding, CDR recognition although a previous reviewer has said it works with a couple of them and I have had luck with Sony CDR disks. Also progressive scan!

I have waited almost more than a year to write something about this player 'cause I wanted the reader i.e. you, to get the best possible value out of your purchase and I think I've waited long enough to write and tell you that this is real value for money even though I seem to have bought this player for more than some people have bought it for. I guess thats the problem living in this part of the world. Anyways I bought this player after going through this site and the comments of people who have bought this player. I think you should too!!. Great vibrant colors and lovely sound!. Lacks analog 5.1 output, progressive scan technology and RCE decoding but I think someone who is seriously into home theatre would already own a receiver/amplifier which would have the decoders built in!. Onkyo should probably think about progressive scans and RCE decoding though!. All in all a wonderful player which is still running great!!.

I just bought the DV-S535. I do not want to talk about the strengths and weaknesses here. U'll find lots of reviews here by far more competent people.

I wanted to let u know that I got this at a phemonenal price of 236 bucks at crutchfield, thats far lower than any other site.

Try this. Go to smartshop.com, search for DV-S535, u'll get a link to crutchfield for 259 (including shipping), follow this link to crutchfield (somehow i couldnt find this directly at crutchfield).
after that when u are doen placing the order, in the "special messages" box, put in the following "REFERRAL PROGRAM 19663499". The price reduction wont show up immediately. However, when u get an e-mail from them, it'll show a reduction of 25 bucks.

U have to be a first time customer and i believe it'll work only for products worth more than 250.

    So good luck

    Strength:

Overall quality, picture, sound, solid built

    Weakness:

None so far, maybe the remote control design...

    Very happy with the product.
Excellent picture and sound, both video and audio.
Played flawlessly everything I tossed into it, DVD movie or CD. The audio unit has very good sound, warm bass and brushed highs. Obviously there is room for better, but, don't forget, there are units costing thousands out there, they have to be better somehow, isn't it?
This machine is definitely much better than my previous Harman/Kardon, as far as the audio section goes, obviously.
    I highly recommend this product.
    Excellent value!!!

    Strength:

Solid Construction, Great Picture, Fast Transport, Great Feature Set. Much better remote than last years model!

    Weakness:

Buttons on remote are too small and not illuminted, but I have an Onkyo learing remote so I don't use it.

Wanted to buy a DVD player that would be solid in construction and offer multiple connection options, but not cost a 1000.00 or more. Originally bought the DVS525, because of the great reviews on this sight. Was very pleased with the sound and picture, but the player occasionally had problems with "layer changes". I was told by my dealer and Onkyo that this should have not been the case, and was immediately offered an exchange. My dealer no longer had the 525 in-stock and had just received his 535's, so he offered me one of these. I was a little hesitant about the lower priced 535 (thinking that Onkyo had probably skimmed somehow to lower the price). To my suprise, the 535 appears to be everything the 525 was and more (although some of the features are what I consider to be useless)!

    Picture quaility is fantastic!
    Sound in movies is great!
Cd sound is good (sorry my last cd was an Adcom so I am little spoiled, but this unit sounds real good)
Don't care about the ability to play cdr's.

Only negative so far is the remote, could be better, but at this price the primary concern should be performance! Most users will have a "learning remote" anyway, and probably won't use this one.

Overall I have to say that Onkyo has taken their top-rated 500.00 DVS525 and put it amazingly enough made it cost 299.00 dollars!

I wish audioreview had a score of more than "5" for value!!!!

    Strength:

    Picture! Sound! Quality!

    Weakness:

Hard to get hold of one.

I just got this player and hooked it up with an optical and S-video connection to my Denon 2800. The first movie I watched was the Matrix in DDSS and it freakin' blew me away. It played it flawlessly. The digital audio connection makes such a HUGE difference, and CDs sound very good through this player. The build quality is very solid. I would definitly recommend this player to anyone who wants to get a great player for a reasonable amount of money.
The only problem is finding one. I had to search and search before I could find a vendor that had one in stock. I waited for a month on backorder from Crazy Eddie and ultimately gave up on them. I finally settled on paying a little more than I could have, but payed no shipping or taxes on it.

    Strength:

Better sound than other DVD-players at this price range.

    Weakness:

Sound is not up to the standard of a decent mid-line CD-player.

Look: main-stream champagne-colored slim box covering the said-to-be Burr Brown DAC which motivated my purchase.

Video quality: I'm not a video freak, and I'm happy with the video quality that this player yields when playing DVDs. 4 stars.

DVD sound quality: Above average when compared with similar products in the price range. Good bass, extented treble (a bit harsh), good dynamic contrasts. I haven't tested the player with DVDs filled with atomic bombs, rockets and car crash cuz they're not my cup of tea. But the atmosphere is satisfactory when watching "normal" movies. 4 stars.

CD sound quality: Gentlemen, if you're like me who want to find a DVD player which can replace your old CD-player and reach for new audio nirvana, then ~PARDON MOI~. This machine couldn't compare with a decent cheap CD-player like my Marantz CD52 mkII which I bought 7 years ago. Bass is average, mids are not involving and treble way too harsh when compared with a CD-player designed with playing music in mind. The sound is mechanical. I've let the player break-in for playing over 50 hours, not much improvement is found.

    My sound reproducing system:
    CD-player: Marantz CD52 mkII
    pre-amp: DIY tube pre-amp (12AU7, 12AX7)
    amp: SET 2A3 3.5 Watt
speakers: Belle Klipsch 3-way horn speakers at 105dB/m

    Strength:

    Audio and Picture Quality

    Weakness:

    None so far.

This is my first dvd player and I must say that I am thrilled about this purchase. I looked at several dvd players by other manufacturers and the dvs535 was by far the best. The build and quality is absolutely great. Others have complained about the remote, I've found the remote to be just fine. This is my first onkyo product and I will definitely consider onkyo when making future purchases. I strongly recommend this dvd player to anyone looking to buy a great dvd player at this price.

    Strength:

Solid build quality, Solid value for the price! Awsome picture output!

    Weakness:

None yet! People complain about the remote being small and ugly. But I found it being functional and pretty easy to use! Also it takes less coffee table space. Also complains about no back lit keys! For $300 buck who cares??

I would recommend this player to anybody looking for their first DVD player or even there second. This is my first DVD player, but with previous experience in Onkyos' commitment in quality, I was no stranger!! I have researched most of the DVD players that are available in the market and I have not yat found a comparible player in price and performance!!

Here in B.C. there are only a few Onkyo dealers. And they were selling the Dv-S535 for $799 Cdn!!($533 US) I was so surpise that they were selling for that much so my brother got it for me down south for about half the price!!

    Great video & sound.

    Weakness:

Contrary to some comments here and in the manual, I found that the 535 does play CDR audio disks. I'm using Sony CDQ-74CN (1x-12x) disks that were burned at 10x speed on a Sony firewire drive.
