Strength:

The Fast Forward and rewind features are sily smooth. You can watch the picture clearly and scan to wherever you'd like to be. The remote is better than adequate.

Weakness:

n/a

I love this DVD player! Currently I three other players; Panasonic, Govideo, and Toshiba. The onkyo is clearly the best. The other players are noisy and and fast forward features are non-existent. The machine I have is refurbished and perhaps the wire problem was fixed before I got it.

Weakness:

"No Disc" problem, remote, and no optical audio output.

Audio and video quality are great! I also had the "No Disc" problem and the player sat broken for several months. Then I saw the fix on this site and it works great! Thanks to everyone for posting the fix!

Strength:

Quality.

Weakness:

"No disc" problem.

We had the same "NO DISC" problem and were considering buying a new player and throwing this one out. But we read the very helpful reviews of folks who had encountered the same problem and tried reseating the ribbon cable. It was not easy to get to the cable, but we managed. AND it WORKS !!!! Thanks to everyone who posted their helpful comments and suggestions on this problem. I hope it lasts.

Strength:

Great video and audio.

I have had this DVD Player for about 18 months with NO problems. Then one day, I had the same NO DISC problem. Just re-seating all the ribbon cables worked for me. (Didn't have to get a new one). We'll see how long it holds up before I have to re-seat them again.

Burr Brown DAC's,

Weakness:

Cable problem.

I have the disc error problem also. I will try the fix before I send it out. Most people don't know but this player has what are called Burr Brown DAC's in it. They are the best filters for digital to audio conversion that there is!

Strength:

This product has been in use nearly every day since we bought it.

Weakness:

This cable thing.

This has been a great DVD player for our family and until last night (prom night) it worked flawlessly. If it hadn''t been for this review site, I would have spent ??? dollars to fix the "no disc" error! Instead, I took the player apart, top & back off and then removed the larger circuit board on top by disconnecting the cables that would allow me to fold it over to the side. Then I gently tugged off the cables on the circuit board underneath the larger circuit board and plugged them back in (reset them?). About 30-60 minutes later, imagine my excitement at NOT having to take this in for repair! I wanted to thank all of you who took the time to write in about the problem so I could continue to use a product I have been satisfied with for 2+ years. Thanks again to those in the know for sharing. Good luck to everyone else who might need to deal with this eventually.

Strength:

audio/video/construction (ribbon cable excepted)

Weakness:

it needs to be fixed

This is an update to an earlier comment on why this unit is breaking for everyone. I found an authorized repair facility that would talk to me. The existing ribbon cable for the laser assembly is the problem and the solution was to change the existing ribbon (about three inches) with a longer one (about 6 inches) the shop even sold me the cable that Onkyo sent out for the replacement part. Also the previous comment about the hot glue gun is also a good idea. Also if you want to read a burnt cd in this player your best bet is to get the fuji film 80min CDR''s. they read excelent in everything I have put them in, including this DVD player that says it doesn''t support CDR.

Strength:

Good price

Weakness:

Does not radomly play from one CD to another.

I was blown away to discover that the TX-DS595 does not radomly play between CD''s. I passed on progressive scan for a multi disk player with the thought that I could mix the music. This sytem only radomly plays one disk at a time. Why else would someone buy a multi disk player. This product was priced quite well but I expect more from ONKYO!

Strength:

- Awesome picture quality - Awesome sound quality - 6 discs of which 5 are changable w/ out stoppage of play

Weakness:

- Loose cable everyone is complaining about - Spinning DVDs & CDs are noisy up close - Pitiful remote (although Onkyo''s CHAD remote is one of the most innovative remotes out there)

Thanks for the info from John & Firewolf in their reviews. (January 20, 2002 & March 15, 2002 respectively) To fix the disc error, I used a technique that was often used in the PC manufacturing industry before most of the cables had locking clips. - GLUE GUN - If you are mechanically inclined or feeling good about taking something completely apart & putting it back together again, use a glue gun to secure the cables. Be sure & unplug the cable and plug it back in again. You won''t have the disc error again unless you drop kick it across the street. Its actually not too complicated to take apart and put back together again unless you have Alzheimer''s. It is very dissappointing that Onkyo has not addressed this issue. BUT, (and that''s a BIG BUTT) they have superior audio/video electronics. Everyone''s aloud to make a mistake every now & then. Its just when those mistakes start becoming more frequent, its time to switch manufacturers. This is a GREAT product with a small flaw.
