Worked fine for about half a year and then the door stopped opening. Opened the housing and fixed, but problem came back. Fixed again and problem came back. And again and after about four uses, the door again would not open. Now the player sits gathering dust and is not used. It is impractical to continually have to open the housing and nudge the door open gently just for one use. This product does not seem built to last a long time with regular wear and tear. When I actually do get the door open, it works fine, but I should not need a screwdriver to get to that point. I do not recommend purchase.

Strength:

When it works it works fine. Sadly, this is less than 50% of the time.

Weakness:

Nearly every bad behavior short of actually chewing up the DVD is exhibited at least once during a 2-hour movie.

I received this DVD player as a gift one Christmas. I looked forward to the high quality picture, seamless presentation and outstanding audio from todays DVD movies. Halfway into the first rental the picture froze just like pushing Pause. It jumped forward a bit in a stuttering digital frenzy and then resumed playing. I cleaned the disc and the problem went away. During a replay this problem repeated during the length of the movie. The type of DVD seems to make no difference; all are subject to pausing, skipping and, oddly enough, the player will repeat 10 second segments of movie, like an echo.

Strength:

When it works it does a good job. Makes a good door stop and will soon make a fine target.

Weakness:

It barely works 50% of the time.

I have had the exact same skipping and freezing problems that others have had. It doesn't matter if the disc if new or old, they still skip. Sometimes it will actually play a movie but as often as not it skips, gags, and freezes. This often happens with brand new DVDs. This unit sucks and since others are habing the exact same problems I hope nobody else ever buys the damn thing.

Strength:

Good picture quality and features.

Weakness:

None other than those mentioned above (re: a dvd player that doesn't play discs).

I bought this product mainly to play dvd's and haven't tried any mp3s, etc. on it. I was very satisfied with its performance for the first couple months. However, approximately two months ago, it began skipping and freezing while playing rented discs. These discs were dirty and scratched and my own dvds still performed well, so I assumed the condition of the rented discs were to blame. In the last week I have witnessed the player behave in the manner described above on my personal dvds. In fact, I just bought a new dvd and it played approximately half way, then began to freeze. I stopped play and returned later to continue viewing the dvd, and the player would not load it at all. It will not load any of my personal dvds now. I have had no other problems with this player, but when it fails to perform its main function, one becomes quite disappointed...

Strength:

None that I have found so far.

Weakness:

Will not load half the discs I purchase. Typically has play problems with the discs it will load. Open button does not always respond and unit has to be powered down and back up to get it to open.

I received this as a gift from my daughter on Father's day 2002. It was fine at first. Recently, however, about 1 of every 2 dvd's I buy will not load. Of those that do load it has ocassional problems with skipping, repeating scenes, freezing. Being new to dvd players, I assumed the first couple incidents were due to bad discs, but it happened again and again. That's when I scanned the web looking for reviews of the product and found time and time again people generally consider it to be a very low quality player.

All formats work like they're supposed to.

Weakness:

Didn't like some CDRW media.

Excellent player at an excellent price! This player plays everything you throw at it, including VCDs and SVCDs, with no problems.

Strength:

Good picture, sleek design

Weakness:

not a user friendly remote

I have had good luck playing movies so far. My only complaints are, while in standby for more than approximatley three hours it will not turn on with the remote control. I called customer service and they said it shouldn't do that. I exchanged it, and the new one does the same thing. Also, my Kenwood stereo and Hitachi tv remotes activate menues on the player that are not intended to. Such as the stereo volume button brings up the setup menu.

Strength:

inexpencive, playing a lot of formats: CD-R, MP3, VCD

Weakness:

quiality, remote, do not really work well

This DVD payer has a very bad quality:
1. It cannot stand by. You need physically turn on turn off.
2. Most times you need open/close/open/close in order DVD player start playing disk.
3. When I change volume on my TV or Receiver it affects DVD player. It starts spinning disks and play part of software over and over.
4. Sometimes it skips some chapters on DVD.
On a plus side:
1. Not a bad picture duality.
2. Nice sound for DD and DTS.
But any way I would suggest to stay away from this unit, because all of bugs it has.

Strength:

Plays mp3,vcd, cd-r, cd-rw. Has shuffle and zoom features

Weakness:

none (yet)

I read the first review on this board and was a little recluctant on buying this; however, I had to give it a try. It was on sale for $98 at target and was mainly interested the mp3 player feature as well as the vcd feature. I figured I would return it if there were problems. This dvd player has all the feature you need including the zoom feature if you don't like widescreen movies. And It plays vcds. In addition, it has a shuffle feature for mp3 songs. I played mp3 music, dvd movies, vcd movies w/ no problems at all. In fact, I'm quite impressed. It's just as good as my toshiba sd1200 or even a little better because it plays cd-r/cdrw. I would recommend this highly. Zero problem here. I've only used it for two weeks though. I would try this before and Apex player though :)
