Strength:

Great sound and vision, and mostly colour!

Weakness:

Some irritating habits, and irrational behaviour....that reminds me of someone!

I have owned this player for over 4 years now, and for the most part it has been excellent. Great sound and picture, though the sound is of greater importance for my usage (mostly CDs). I have experienced some of the annoying characteristics described by the other users here, (slow loading, and occasionally skipping/sticking). The skipping and sticking problem seems mostly due to oversensitivity to scratches or dirt on the disc, which can of course be minimised by cleaning before loading. More annoyingly i have found a few DVDs that will only play in black and white. This cannot be a zone issue as the discs were also local issue here in Australia. I have played some bought from the UK also with no problem. It was mooted to me by a friend who has the same unit, that his had that problem, which was changing some setting related to Copyright Protection on the disc. I sent it back to marantz, and they could come up with nothing (comments in customer service section). I haven't persued it because it was previously on rented discs, but now i have bought THe Kids Are Alright" special edition by the Who, and despite the retro appropriateness on the 60s material, would love to see it in colour!! Has anyone else encountered this?

Customer Service

Not particularly helpful.....tried to charge me several hundred dollars for a fix it didn't need, then when questioned told me they hadn't looked at it yet.....so shocking in fact.

Strength:

Good picture and sound

Weakness:

broke within warranty service period...

As with many others here, I must admit that at first the unit worked fine and delivered exceptional video and audio however, it began to skip and freeze I received a marantz 4300 as a replacement because marantz could not fix the problem with the 3100

Strength:

very easy to use, has all the features that a home viewer would like, BUT there are a few snags which anoy me greatly.

Weakness:

WHERE IS THE VCD FACILITY...... if you wish as i did to save family vids on vcd, and then to view on this machine. FOGET IT.... Gutted.

I have read the reviews here and must add i have never had any troubles with skipping, however, i do find it takes long to load. This is a small price to pay for the quality of picture and sound received. I will add that a friend has a dvd player that has equivalent quality, loads remarkably quicker, BUT cost him three times as much.

Strength:

Picture and sound quality were tremendous when the unit was new.

Weakness:

Picture freezes and skips after 1/2 - 1 hour of playing.

I have had this unit for slightly more than 1 year. At first it worked exceptionally well. However, it gradually began to freeze and skip on more and more movies (including new dvds). I sent the unit back through a local company to Marantz and it was returned 2 months later with the same problems. I plan on contacting Marantz directly and will post a follow up if their customer service handles this professionally. I also own a Marantz receiver (SR7000) that I am very happy with.

Strength:

Excellent sound and visual quality. Nice clean look. Simple to operate.

Weakness:

LOTS of skipping and pausing on both DVDs and CDs. Slow disc loading and recognition.

Almost every DVD skips or pauses at some point during the movie, and skips occur often on CD playback as well. The picture and sound quality is great for the 98% of the time that it is working, but the brief miscues are annoying. Reading the other few reviews, it sounds like Marantz has a serious quality issue with this player. I'm glad I see other people's feedback on this same unit - I'm returning it for something else. Not what I expected from Marantz.

Strength:

Superior picture quality and sound. Easy to use. Decent build quailty. Simple look.

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R's and is rather slow loading.

I have been using this DVD player for about two weeks now and I am very impressed with the picture quailty. A friend of mine compared it to the a higher priced Toshiba player as well as the DV7010. We agreed that the 3100 had a little better color and picture quality than the Toshiba and stood up well against the 7010. The only thing the 7010 has that I would have liked is an optical out and CD-R playback capabilities, but for as little as I listen to CD-R's, this player seemed to be the best choice for me. If you are looking for a player that has great performance and you are willing to sacrifice some of the bells and whistles, the 3100 may be for you. Personally, I am happy to give up some load time for the performance.

Strength:

excellent audio and video quality. simple design.

Weakness:

only one digital out. display is very dim. takes a while to read dvd's. numbers on remote- but can't use them to jump to desired scenes???

i got this for a terrific price on line. not a refurb. the video and audio quality was superior to my old unit from sony. however, the reaction time was terrible. it takes a while to read everything. the unit is a very simple one, with only a few buttons- this works both ways. if you want to perform certain features, you need to track down the remote. it lacks the simple things, but delivers great quality. a great deal for the price i paid.

Strength:

Simplicity, Picture, Sound, Price

Weakness:

Slow loading and difficulty in reading some discs

I just bought this piece 2 weeks ago, along with the Sr7000, a digital surround receiver. On the plus side, the 3100 is very easy to operate, and has very clean lines. The sound and picture is probably the best you will find in this price range. However, there are a few problems that I have been experiencing.

The 3100 is slow to load DVD's and CD's. In addition, it does not read alot of my CD's at all. These CD’s do not have obvious scratches, or other blemishes. In fact, the 3100 failed to play a new DVD on the first few attempts.

I have a Marantz CD player that is very musical, and when the 3100 plays, it sounds just as good.

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? Perhaps I have a defective unit. If there are any DV-7010 users reading this, would you enthusiastically recommend that I upgrade?
