Strength:

Picture quality, ease of use. This is one of the most user friendly players I've had. CD playback, build and Video off function.

Weakness:

None, the unit is faultess!

This review is for the mkII model. The DV-18 mkII so far has exceeded all my expectations. The picture quality is great with all colors being very natural and there are no signs of discolor or bleeding in the reds and oranges on NTSC films as I had seen in other players. Picture detail is sharp especially with PAL. The only drawback is it brings out ALL the faults on DVD video transfers and other picture defects etc. The sound quality is near perfect with loads of detail and warmth. As far as CD playback is concerned (for a DVD player) the sound is brilliant with all frequency ranges being very controlled and especially with acoustic instruments the sound is quite detailed. I am not a hifi expert but compared to all previous forms of cd playback I've had the DV-18 just blows them away. I havn't had any of the quality control problems other reviewers have had, the unit overall is faultless. If anyone is looking for the DV-18 mkII here in Australia, it's currently on runout at the moment and you should be able to pick one up for around $2000AUD or under. An absolute bargain. My setup: Onkyo: TX-DS989 AV Reciever Mission: 781 - Mains 78c - Centre 78ds - Surround L/R 771e - Back L/R All wired up using various Audioquest cable.

Strength:

Outstanding unit. Flawless reproduction of both audio and video. Worth its price. I would definitely buy it again.

Weakness:

My first unit ended up failing. The remote shuttle/jog is a bit annoying. No warmth in an otherwise very clean cd preamp.

I am surprised to here so many of us have had some kind of problem with this unit. I returned my first unit when it began to fail to read DVDs about 6 months after I bought it. The second unit I got has been flawless. And I have had it for over 2 years now. I love this unit. I run it with the Marantz SR-18, B&W Nautilus 805s and B&W HTM2 center. Both DVD and CD quality are outstanding. The only thing I''ve noticed is that the CD playback, like many expensive CD players, is so accurate it can sometimes feel like it''s lacking musical warmth. My solution to this was to use the SR-18''s less expensive (yet very nice) preamp to do the digital-to-analog conversion. The SR-18 creates a more fun/warm sound and, like the DV-18, stays true to a flat signal across the entire frequency spectrum. If you want to know what I mean by musical warmth listen to a classic Marantz reciever(1970s) or new McIntosh equipment. Clean and very musical. BTW, McIntosh equipment would be my first choice, but who can afford that stuff?

Strength:

Probably a very good DVD movie player (THX ultra certified, etc...). Wasn''t testing this, though

Weakness:

If you expect good DVD and CD playing at this price, you are much better off splitting your cash with 3/4 on a good CD player and 1/4 on a cheap DVD player

This is actually for the European DV-17, which I assume is the European version of the DV-18, since there is no DV-18 for sale in Europe. This is not a full review, but just an indication of CD replay quality based on listening tests between this DVD player and a number of pure CD players of varying price classes: The DV-17 costs 2000 euros here in Europe, which is the same price as the very impressive Marantz CD 17 MKII KI Signature, and considerably more than good CD players like Myryad''s CD200, Marantz''s own CD 17 MKII, and many other players from companies like Musical Fidelity, Arcam, Primaire, etc.. I was interested in other comments on this site about how this DVD player was capable of holding its own with CD players of the class of the CD 17 MKII (1200 euros), so I decided to go along and listen for myself. My conclusion disappointed me, and convinced me that anyone looking for good CD replay should stick with an expensive CD player and buy a separate cheap DVD player for the movies. We tested using various B&W Nautilus and KEF reference speakers, and various amplifiers including the Marantz PM17 MKii, Myryad MI120, and even the Denon 3802 for extra comparison. The DV-17 as a CD player sounded washed out and lacking in both bass and general detail. The music was simply lifeless. I felt that it was completely outperformed in every way by the Myryad MC200, which costs just over half the price of the DV-17. The Marantz CD-17 KI Sig. totally blew the DV-17 away to such an extent that I can''t believe anyone listening to both players could bear to part with cash for the DV-17. As you can read, I''m pro Marantz, since the Marantz sound goes very well with my classical music, and I really wanted the DV-17 to be my solution to a simple hifi system with just a musical DVD player + multichannel amplifier combination. I just couldn''t bring myself to like anything about the DV-17, and would never justify spending that amount of money on it, no matter how good the video circuitry was.

Strength:

Picture Quality THX Ultra DTS Decoding

Weakness:

Problems from day one make it practically unusable

Soon after I bought this unit it developed a problem responding to the remote. Everthing is fine until about 30 minutes after powering up. After that point you need to be progressively closer to the unit with the remote for it to respond. After an hour or so it won''t respond to remote inputs at all, even if you hold the remote against the unit! The remote itself is poor as well. The jog/shuttle ring is supposed to allow you to FF or RW through 1-3X speeds, but in practice it''s always "Oops, too far...oops, too far...". Minimal access to functions from front panel. When it is working the picture quality and features are great, but for me that''s rarely.

Strength:

Improved audio and video

Weakness:

Doesn' have progressive scan

This DVD player is totally excellent in every respect. When I first started to view a DVD movie I immediately noticed the improved audio and video quality over the Marantz 930 DVD player, which is also a very nice piece.

Strength:

High quality picture and excellent sounding. Delivers pleasant warm image without much compensation.

Weakness:

Slow tray, insensitive remote commands,

This is the one that everyone should get. It doesn't have the sharpest image on the market but its one of the best in the market. It passed various requirements such as AC3 and THX ultra. Most of all, you just keep watching one after another.
