Strength:

Plays VideoCDs even CD-R and CD-RW. It plays them very well. Phillips plays them too, but won't scan them. good price, excellent value. Smooth scanning forward and back.

Weakness:

When multiple angles are present, the word ANGLE appears in block letters and cannot be disabled. Yes, the fuse problem, but if it happens to you Konka will send you $25, not bad. Silver cover instead of black. Doesn't remember where the disc was last played like Phillips does.

I guess I said it all allready. Wish I could change a few things about it. But I think it's a great player and a great value.

Strength:

Looks nice

Weakness:

Doesn't live up to its claims of easy usage and ability to read any cd.

I bought the Konka on a whim and I regretted it right away. Firstly, it claims to play all discs (cd, dvd, vcd,s-vcd,audio) I have to disagree with that. The first disk that I tried was a vcd. I couldn't get it to work. All I got was an error message saying incorrect function. After that I went out and rented a DVD to test it. After about 5 minutes of fiddling, and getting extremely aggravated, I finally got it to work. It was terrible. I had to wait for 3 minutes (I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but it is!) for the menu to load! That's unacceptable. I regret buying it and returned it the next day.

Strength:

Plays every disc known to man. Video is perfect. Audio is great.

Weakness:

Needs MP3 format support.

I have had this unit for over 2.5 years now and have absolutely no problems. I have the unit hooked up with a radio shack a/d converter on my coaxial only TV. Ok, Ok, so I am not a video and audio enthuiast. Basically, I want a player that plays any disc when I stick it in. It's got to have a good picture with good sound. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the Konka and Sony, Panasonic, and Pioneer. Except that the Konka plays EVERY disc. The konka is for someone who wants a AWESOME unit for the cheapest price. This is IT!

Strength:

Great picture quality. Good audio quality

Weakness:

DVD does not last.DvD picture folded over then went black.
No power. Cost to get it repaired unreasonable

While I had the use of the Konka, the quality was of Laser
disc varity. I own a pioneer CLD980 laser disc for about
10 years now, the same one with no problems. But with the
DVD it did not hold up and I am very dissatified with the
unit and cost to have it repaired. I took it to frys for
repair which they do not do and it would have cost me $49
just to send it to the factory for repairs. Since it was out of warranty for two months they estimated cost to run
approx.$150. That is more than I paid for unit. The
Warranity sucks. Try to get repaired locally and not one
repair shop could do it. All I have to say "WATCH where
you buy." I would not own another Konka unit I am sorry
to say.

I purchased a Konka KD-1800U for $179 from Fry' Electronics. I believe that Fry's is the only place that sells the Konka. By the way, Konka is one of China's largest manufacturers of TV's. They plan to sell HDTV's in the US by late December. Getting back to the review, I must say that overall I am impressed by this DVD player. The picture quality is first rate. It is as good as that of my Panasonic A-120U. This unit has all of the features you could ask for in an entry level DVD player, including zoom and Dolby Digital outputs. This unit also has a very nice remote control. My only complaint's about this unit are that it has an extremely large footprint(this sucker is huge!) and this unit does not have a reputation for reliability. However, on their webpage Konka claims to have manufactured 1 million DVD players in 1998. By the way, this unit is MV free, if you know what mean ;-)

I too purchased this product from Frys. It was to be a gift for my sister. Since I had never heard of Konka before, I serached the newsgroups for anyone talking about this unit. There was alot of people talking about how to buy stock and there was one guy that bought one from Frys. His first message was alot like the review just prior to this, his next was about the unit dying completely and his subsequent return.
So I kept mine on for awhile and played about 10 DVDs in a week's time, didn't even watched them, just wanted to make sure the unit didn't die. Well, guess what...IT DID.

This thing is junk stay away from it. It will die on you, if it takes more than 30 days, then you'll have to find a repair center for Konka - if they have one. If you do decide to give it a try, leave in on for a couple of days and plays lots of DVDs... Good luck...

FELIX

Strength:

Exceptional video and audio output quality. Value for price.

Weakness:

Large footprint. Heat output. Repeated promises to
respond to my phone calls and e-mails to Konka
in an attempt to determine if reported problems can
be identified by manufacture date have fallen on
deaf ears. No answer from Konka.

Only used about 10 hours so far, without problems other than
what appears to be substantial heat. Don't know if that's
normal or not. Need to know if the fuse/power supply problem
so widely reported appears on units manufactured on or
before a particular date(mine was manufactured 11/99)?

Strength:

$147 dollars

Weakness:

Doesn't work.

None of the buttons on the remote worked. I would press the setup button and the unit would go on standby. Was able to play a DVD movie without using the remote but when I tried pressing pause. The unit would go on standby. I would try to navigate the DVDs movie menu, and the unit would go on standby. I guess you get what you pay for, and the old adage "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is." I'm returning the unit back to Frys.

Strength:

S video out, cdr read capability

Weakness:

this macrovision crap: when hooked up to a vcr the macrovision function is enabled which fades the color in and out. I heard earlier models didnt have this problem, maybe its just a new thing on the new konkas or my vcr is not old enough. And the regions that are only allowed to play in this dvd is 1. If any1 figures out a code to disable these post it, that would be cool.

Decent unit if you have enough room to store the tank..
Does emit a fair amount of heat, but can come in handy if you want to fry some eggs in your room. Other than that, it plays fine, sounds fine, Pornos have never looked this good before- thats for sure :)
