Strength:

Solid Construction (for its weight) Design Quick Load/Respond 5-60X >>/<< Mode Disc Memory Resume (even if power shut off and disc removed) DVD Audio & DVD R/W capability SVCD capability 3-D Phonic (very stunning surround effects from 2 channel stereo speakers!!) Plays disc from every country: PAL/NTSC/RCE and all Region Coded Disc w/o a Converter! (my upgraded unit only)

Weakness:

DVD Audio in analog? (I could be wrong) No WMA JPEG slow (small issue) Remote is confusing (too busy)

This is my first DVD Player. Before buying, I was actually in the market for a multi-region PAL/NTSC player with a built in converter and finally narrowed down to the JVC (Paid extra for the upgrade). I like the simple but very classy design (in black, to match w/ my other system), the unit does offer alot more than I expected, like: DVD Audio & DVD-R/W playback capability. I use the "component" (RGB) hook up and in non-progressive mode through a Panasonic 27" flat, and the picture and sound quality is superb and stunning!

One more thing. I have no problem to play mp3 files on cdr disc and it sounded very nice too. All high, mid and low range are present. Of course, you need full range speakers to get the best sound. I used the optical connection for DVD movie, CD and mp3 play back with no issue.

Strength:

Audio - CD Video - DVD and VCD Remote - very easy to use OSD - I have not used the manual yet, the on screen display is very easy to understand. Connections - all are gold plated ! Nice. Smooth DVD operation. I have not tested DVD-A and Progressive so I can not say for these yet.

Weakness:

The disc holder does not seem to be strong at all. I need to be gentle with it !! The whole machine is very light at 5.6 lbs. I think it does not have much metal parts in it. Cost saving for JVC! Does not have thumb mode when viewing JPEG. Does not tell the singer and sony title of the mp3 files. Does not play MicroSoft WMA file. Does not play DVD-RAM disc. Am I asking for too much for $174 ?

Wow ! This is my first time to get a JVC product. After reviewing different DVD players, I chose the JVC XA-SV602SL. This player has every function that I expect: - zoom mode with very good quality - gamar color correction - mp3 player and jpeg viewer using CDR and CDRW disc. - fast and smooth forward/backward - 30 disc resume memory for DVD and VCD disc (big time saver). - Silver case with very nice and very clear dot matrix counters display - DVD-A with 24bit/96hz - Play SVCD and VCD on CDR and CDRW discs. - Allow me to jump to any scene based on the time. - Allow me to expand the 16:9 movie vertically so I see more picture without cutting off left and right video. It also keep the same video quality. - 192kHz/24-bit & 96kHz/24-bit DVD Audio - DTS and DD decoder. - and much more I do not find the jpeg viewer too slow, it is not bad to display the pictures I downloaded from internet. These files are about 100K to 200K in size. It took about 5 seconds to display each one. I would say it is like a 80486 CPU speed. The video quality is wonderful. The white color is much better than my old player. The picture is very sharp and clear. The dark scense has more details. Overall, both my wife and me are very happy with this player. Some of my VCD have poor mpeg recording, but this player allows me to zoom one level in. The video quality improved a lot with a smaller picture. Another bonus is that it allows me to choose Left, Right or Stereo audio output when playing VCD. Many of my VCD has two different languages, one on Left and one on Right audio channel. With the old player, I need to turn off one speaker. Now I do not need to do that and I can hear same language from both speakers. To get the best video, make sure you use the s-video or component connections. The normal RCA video connection has problem to display the picture. Some objects has ripple edges. I guess the RCA video connection on my Sony 35" TV is not able to handle the signal. This player comes with many cables, but they are not high quality. I have not tried the DVD-A and progressive video yet. But I am sure it will be better than the what I have hear and seen now. The following is a good review from Sound and Vision for this player: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/article.asp?section_id=1&article_id=296&page_number=1 Here is a nicer picture of this player: http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-M3IdZnFTNd9/ProdView.asp?a=&s=0&g=54400&id=morephotos&i=257XVA602S Originally, I wants to get a Panasonic DVD-RP82 or Denon DVD-1600 but it is missing most of the functions that I mentioned above. RP82 has been discontinued and it is just too expensive at eBay. The LCD display is too small too. The replacement model DVD-XP50 has a even smaller LCD display and with no coax connection. The DVD-1600 is also a little more $$ and my wife does not want another black colored equipment ! I got my JVC player at vanns.com with free shipping. They double boxed it and packed very well. Highly recommended. Here are the manuals for the above players: http://books.jvcservice.com/booklist.asp?Model=xv-sa602sl http://www.pasc.panasonic.com/OperatingManuals/DVDXP50.pdf http://www.pasc.panasonic.com/OperatingManuals/DVDrp82.pdf http://www.usa.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/DVD1600%20DFU.pdf It should help anyone looking for a new DVD player.

Strength:

Exellent picture quality. Sleek design. Nice remote (glow in the dark buttons)that can control most TV's. Graphical user interface is very nice but takes a little getting used to at first.

Weakness:

Poor mp3 playback. Slow displaying jpeg files but ok for occasional use. Must use remote to scroll as scroll buttons on main unit are non-exsistent.

I have had this unit for two weeks and have played with it every chance I had. I tested almost every feature and I must say that I am impressed with the fine picture quality. Colors are vivid and images are very clear. And this is without using the progressive scan as my Panny 27" does not have component inputs (but if it did I am sure the images would be outstanding). Unit also plays dvd-audio. Have not recieved my free dvd-audio cd that JVC is promoting so I can't comment on the quaility if dvd-audio just yet. Will post again when I get it. This unit also plays mp3's and jpeg files. I did have problems playing mp3's from cdrw's as the unit just skipped almost every mp3 I had. May be my fault as I may not have burned the files to disk properly. Still experimenting with mp3's. JPEG files played fine but actually displaying the picture took between 5-15 seconds depending on how big the file is. Too slow for me but fine for occasional viewing of jpegs. I would much rather use mp3 and jpegs on my pc as dvd players are for movies anyway.
