Strength:

Advertised SVCD support, slim design, quiet motor operation.

Weakness:

De-interlacer gets fooled in some DVD menus. (eg. Galaxy Quest) S-Video output also becomes progressive when 480p is selected (won't work with any monitor or TV I have). Title/Chapter selection is delayed as the motor revs up to speed, this is audible.

Price is in Canadian Dollars, no tax included in price. This is a great player for the price. Supports almost any disc format under the sun and handles them well. Progressive outputs look great, and pass with flying colours with DVDs that have given other players (or my TV) problems in the past. but... (see weaknesses)

Strength:

all the features...(compatibility, etc...) ID1 automatic for my HDTV to switch in 16:9 mode

Weakness:

it is the second DVD player i have from JVC... the one i have will return to future shop soon... my DVD player always freeze when it's time to change of layer... and is too much sensible to hair on disk on finger print.... to have it work poperly, it needs a new disk... and i still have trouble in changing layers... it was the same with the first i had. I hope it's a bad serie..

it's a great DVD player... the picture is good and i have purchased it to replace my old sanyo... and have progressive scan support SVCD, VCD are working great... Mp3 too for music.... and i agree that watching jpg pictures needs some time.... it's a great DVD player exept that i have some troubles with reading some disks...

Strength:

Recordable DVD+R/RW media compatibility Clean looks, good remote Nice sharp picture, rich colors

Weakness:

None, so far

Purchased the JVC to replace my older Toshiba 3109 (non-progressive scan) dual tray DVD, which had good interlaced 480i picture and worked flawlessly but didn't play CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW's or MP3's. This JVC has no problems playing DVD+R/RW's recorded from analog home movies on my PC, although it only specifies DVD-R compatibility in the spec sheet. The progressive scan is just as good as the built in line doubler on my Panny 47" widescreen using the component video inputs of course. A quick screening of "Gladiator" showed rich colors with fine picture details, and the DTS soundtrack was very dynamic. Picture sharpness is much better than other budget progressive scan models and some costing even more. The JVC adds more color detail to the overall picture and it was virtually free of artifacts. The on-screen menus are good and user friendly and the remote is fine although I use a universal one. If you need the extra DD/DTS processing go for the JVC KV-S600, otherwise the KV-S500 is definitely a best buy at $128.99.

Strength:

Great price/quality ratio. Excellent picture quality. Amazing sound. Nice high resolution on screen menus. Lots of connections

Weakness:

NONE

Well first of all, this is my first DVD player. Before this one I used my girlfriend's GE bottom of the line player. Let me tell you... this JVC player is amazing. I am very satisfied with my purchase. It has all the connections you could ever need plus it has progressive scan direct output which is a bonus. It plays mp3 cds flawlessly which is one of the reasons I bought it. All in all, I am a happy man.
