Strength:

Incredibly loud sound-great picture, big list of features and outputs.

Weakness:

some miscue with power and the disk drawer gets stuck

there are many great things on this dvd-player like forinstance the display of clean, crisp sound and the picture is just as good!It looks bright, colorful, and sharp you could even adjust the setting.and sounds thunderous with or without the 3-d feature I rate it a perfect 10.

Strength:

Picture quality, menu options,

Weakness:

Runs hot, locks up, pixelation, ect..

This was my first DVD player and I was hoping I was going to get the same quality from their DVD as I did from their VHS player. I was sorely mistaken. From the very beginning the unit ran very hot and I had to set up a fan next to it just to keep it cool. It was very temperamental on what DVD's it would play with no real idea why it didn't like one over another even if both were virgin disks. The biggest problem was that about half way into a two-hour movie it would start to pixelate and then just lock up. All I could do was to shut it off for and hour and come back and pick up where I left off, not a very convenient way to watch a movie. There were times when I ran flawlessly but that was only about half of the time. I finally gave up on it and bought a Sony DVP-S560D. I have not had the Sony long so I will wait before I write a review on it. I am sorry to say that I will look at JVC products in a different light after my bad experience with product. I can only recommend that you stay away from this particular DVD player.

Strength:

Looks good when the power is off.

Weakness:

Looks real bad when you try to use it for something other than a paper-weight.

I bought this unit in the fall of 1999 and had problems with it right out of the box. At first I thought it was just a dirty or bad disc. Since I hardly used it the warranty expired before I realized the unit was crap. Half of the DVDs I rent don't play. Basically it is having the same skipping, pixelating, and getting hot problems as everyone else. I have read the first thirty reviews in this websight and only about 3 people have anything good to say at all about it. If my math is correct that means that 90% of these units are trash. How could this happen? $400 is a lot of money to pay for something I could have fished out of my own toilet for free. Needless to say, I won't be buying another JVC product for as long as I live. DO NOT BUY.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound when it worked.

Weakness:

Frequent lock-ups, skips and pixelation. Problems got progressively worse until it no longer plays DVDs it once did.

This was my first DVD player and for a brief while I was in heaven. Initially, I thought the periodic glitches -- skips, latency when selecting menu items, etc., -- were problems with the discs, but then things headed south in a hurry. The problems got progressively worse, and when they extended to discs that played okay before, I knew I had terrible player. Finally, it would not read discs, period!

I tried the JVC-supplied reset procedure to no avail. SoundTrack tells me it will cost up to $150 to fix this piece of #@*&. I so rue the day I decided to buy this player; especially since my first inclination was to purchase a Toshiba. No way will I look at another JVC product!

Strength:

When it worked, the number of features and adjustments and external fit and finish.

Weakness:

After a year, more and more frequent skips, pixellation and lock ups that even the EPROM no longer corrects, to the point it is unwatchable. JVC has been totally unresponsive about correcting the problems even though I sent it to an authorized JVC repair center.

The foregoing sums it up well. Stay away from this unit or any JVC DVD player for that matter. A review of other posts for this and other JVC DVD players reflects numerous customer complaints about the same problems and JVC's complete lack of customer support. I'll never buy any JVC product ever again! It is one thing to have a problem and a manufacturer which stands behind its products; it's quite another to have a problem which appears to be commonplace and a manufacturer which completely ignores its customers.

Bought this dvd player online. It initially worked
fine for about a year. Watched about 5 times worth.
About 3 months ago it started to not be able to read
one dvd i rented from a local video store. Now it's
not reading anything. Terrible. I would recommend
anyone to stay away from this product.

Weakness:

Undependable.

Extremely disatisfied with JVC's DVD products. I would not suggest to anyone to purchase a JVC DVD player. Purchased a XV511BK some months ago and after about 6 movies began to experience problems. Picture freezing up or blocking, audio cutting in and out. So I took it back and moved up to the XVD701BK and started having problems immediately, same stuff. I will be taking it back and shopping for another more dependable brand. Getting tired of cabling and recabling and running back to BlockBuster telling them I have a bad DVD!

Strength:

Very few: Video features include: Digest, Zoom, Variable speed FF and REW.

Weakness:

Remote designed by a three toed sloth.
Error handling non-existant.
Some locks ups require AC power removal.
A/V cables made from reynolds wrap and bubble gum.
Slow processing in menus and video features.
JVC Customer Support trained in Concentration Camps.
Warrantee worthless.

I've had the XV-701BK for about 4 months now and have had varing results. I like the features you get for the buck, VFP, digest, zoom, 5.1 decoder, but I think the instablilty of the product far out weighs the bells and whistles. First of all the A/V cables included are crap, if you still have yours, throw then away and invest in some Monster Cables. You'll be amazed at the difference in picture quality and color contrasts. Second, memorize the ROM reset sequence, because you will definitely need to use it. I run into about 5 locks ups to date, 3 of which I could solve with a power off, but to of which required AC power disconnection. All of these caused major problems with playback after, and you have to reset the ROM otherwise the picture becomes heavily pixelated, the decompression starts to waver, and becomes out of sync with the sound. The biggest problem by far is JVC Customer Support. When you call, expect ot be on hold for atleast 15 minutes. When you finally get through, don't expect the person you are talking to to have any idea of your product specs or of a way to fix your problem. After you are blue in the face, they will escalate your call to a Support Supervisor, who could care less if you are happy with you $350+ dollar DVD player purchase. Basically, take the warrantee out of the box, and wipe your butt with it, cause thats about what it is worth. You can have you player "fixed" but expect to atleast front the shipping to and from the JVC Service Center. And if you're player doesn't work out of the box, you just bought a refurbished product, because JVC does NOT replace defective goods, they fix them. All in All, I wouldn't purchase a JVC toothbrush at this point. My advice, save for a extra week or two, and buy the Sony, because you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Good picture and 5.1 sound when the unit is functioning.

Weakness:

Remote and manual are aweful to use and this machine is a bit complicated.

I've had nothing but problems since I bought this player from Circuit City. I took it back three times, because it would lock up and not play any DVDs. The last time I took it back was two months ago and now the Dolby Digital outs don't work anymore. Judging by the remote, menus, and owner's manual, JVC did a rush job on this model and it shows. Stay away from JVC, and don't but it at Circuit City either -- the technical service is aweful.
