Strength:

Excellent Picture + Sound

Weakness:

Would love to have a (1) remote that ties in all my JVC audio and video equipment without sacrificing any features. Anyone know of a solution + source?

Purchased new through UBid after XV-M555BK arrived DOA due to flimsy packaging and rough UPS handling. Got it for a song... I've used only to play DVDs - approx. 10 different - and I have no complaints - no skips or freezing. Seems I was one of the lucky ones who could score this player high. A true 5 on value rating, 4.5 overall (Hey, GetPlugged, give us a wider scale!)

Strength:

Quiet transport, thater mode (picture brightness control), Very nice picture quality, Component Out, Good quality downconversion, NO lip sync prob ever

Weakness:

Default is PCM everytime it's been plugged out.
Skips DVDs from time to time (which is normal incidents)
Cannot play when it is hot, make sure it's properly ventilated (the heat came from my other equipments though)
No coax digital output

In all, given the price/performance consideration, this is a decent to good player. Meaning it works flawlessly, provided you got a good unit, not a defective one. The features are nice and working

Picture Quality : 4 stars, very good!
Sound: 5 stars
Digital (Bitstream) Quality: Good, quick compares to Sony when plays AC-3
Mechanical parts: 5 stars, quiet and reliable transport tray

This should be a 4 star solid player, however, some oxymorons (with defective units, or mediocre gears, or stupid expectations of having onboard DD processor at given price, or even complaining about no DTS) give 1 stars to kill it. Of course, you don't play CDs on a DVD player and expecting a dedicated CD player quality either! (The CDs are by far sound much nicer on a $500-$1000 CD player)

I found this player to be stable, good built quality, and reliable! Overall, 4-4.5 solid stars!

Weakness:

Remote buttons, Digital Out Only Opitcal

I am very disapointed w/ this unit. I have experienced audio glitches/drop-outs all over the place! I couldn't bare to watch all of Godzilla. Had problem w/ numerous Brand NEW disks. Bought a sony to compare side by side and Sony handled the audio w/o the skips on the JVC. Buttons for play, pause, etc. which are important during playback where too small to find easily and were on top of remote which made one handed operation harder than the sony. Some say that coax may have solved the audio problem but no coax output to try. Also I am now having problems swithing thru DVD menu. The player does not always respond to remote or is delayed.

Strength:

the on screen menu lets you keep watching the movie

Weakness:

slow at reading the disc, could use a second digital output (for flexibility with all kinds of revievers), has tendency to build up static charge which make the player "freeze" when it's reading the disc

I am a big fan of the component video picture quality. It made Blade and The Matrix look incredible. The menu lets you make minor adjustments to the picture and aduio (language and subtitles). I'd like to see an easy way to do an "AB" loop. The audio set up menu was hard to access (you can't have a disc in the player) and I thought I broke my reciever when I couldn't get the discs to play in dolby digital. I had to do a lot of other little adjustments with the menus to match it up with my system but once I got that taken care of, it was smooth sailing. I think that the digital audio output is great but the optical only output might not be compatible with every receiver.
One problem that I've had with my player is that the player will "freeze" and not read the disc. I couldn't get the tray to open either and I thought I was going to have to get the thing serviced. Fortunately it was (according to the manual) a "buildup of static charge) but it was still a pain in the arse to unplug the player from my surge protector and the plug it back in. (I did some creative installation of my power strip and it's not too accessible for aesthetic's sake) Aside from this problem, it's been quite nice living in the DVD age. I still recommend it as a solid, hard working player.

Strength:

Very easy to set-up, great sound and picture.

Weakness:

None yet , will update after 2 weeks and then in three months

Just bought DVD player last night and threw in the Matrix and it looked outstanding. I stayed away from the entry level Sony because of all the problems I viewed on-line about exchanging the unit and getting it repaired. Wheather your first DVD guy like myself, do your reserch and check out the units and don't get talked into the more expensive models with the dts decoder in them. If you have a pro-logic reciever it will still sound good until you buy a DTS unit.
Even though I could of bought on-line I didn't, because I wanted to bring it back to a local retailer , like Circuit City. They will exchange the unit within the first 30-Days if you are not satisfy or want to upgrade. If this unit performs well I will give it 5 stars.

Strength:

Inexpensive machine with many extra features

Weakness:

Remote sucks

Obviously not a reference model, but for the price you cannot go wrong. There are cheaper machines, but that's what they are..cheap. The JVC 511 is an attractive unit with many nice features that are found on more expensive models. Component video output is fantastic, currently using a JVC AV32D500 television and moster video 2 cables. Bought mine on mercata.com for $226 including 2nd day air and $25 rebate.

This a great unit for the price. I have only experienced a few problems (alt. ending in Arlington Road cause some dvd's to stop reading) The sound and picture have been great. So far the unit has held up to 6hr movie marithons without a hitch. I bought this at knocking.com and highly recommend this online store to anyone. Their service is topnotch. Overall I am very happy with my purchase.

Strength:

AC3/DTS decoder

Weakness:

no coaxial digital audio output

After 2 more months of use, I've experienced no problems.
Based on its' performance, I've also purchased a JVC S-VHS VCR, and will buy a JVC receiver in the future. Selling prices range from $225 to $350, on average for this DVD player. Remote works just fine. Manual is an easy read.
Try it you'll like it! I did.

Strength:

Continues to play flawlessly from Private Ryan to Matrix. The picture looks great, though I really use it most for audio. It continues to be QUIET, both in the transport and the output. Separate sections for power supply, electronics make this is solid design...

Weakness:

None that I've encountered.

I've had this since september and use it on average for 3 to 4 hours per day, 70% music, 30% dvd... I have 0 complaints. It's fast compared to some, exceptionally quiet and very precise in tracking. Using the TV screen, programming audio selections is easy, unlike some other dvd makes and models. The remore is certainly adequate, but I think the real future is in aftermarket remotes with large LCD's. I don't buy a unit for the remote because i think other factors are more imprtant -- like build quality and reliability. This unit thus far has been excellent. I'm very glad I bought it.

Strength:

Great deal, Optical output, perfect companion for a receiver that has built in dolby digital and DTS decoders. very quiet transport.

Weakness:

No default for 5.1 audio, No coax output, no digital or DTS decoder (not needed if in your Receiver)

Very impressed with today's DVD technology. $219 + the dreaded Ecost handling charge and I was off to the races. The unit contained 4 DVDs to get me started and now they have a new promotion giving you 5. I've had the unit for 3 months now and very satisfied with the purchase. The only quirk so far is that on two separate occasions, the unit shut off while watching 1 particular DVD. Very weird but not a big deal as a push of the play button was all it needed. The unit plays very well even after 4 hours of steady work. So far the lock up/ clear the Eprom sequence on the web site hasn't been needed. The remote is OK but you need to set up or select the 5.1 audio track as the unit does not have a default feature for you to select. Even though the DVD claim to fame is that they are great CD players as well, I wouldn't consider this as a great audio CD player as several older titles read as no disk! Van Halen was the biggest disappointment. In all, one of the best values out there...
