Since music (specifically Jazz) is my bag, the maiden voyage of this peice was "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. I have heard this cd at least 1000 times on all my player (home, work, car, portable) but it was like listening to it for the first time. I was amazed that so much richness in sound could be added by a cd/dvd player.
The first DVD was Stigmata. While I am only pushing Pro-Logic, I was still impressed with the sound. (I can't compare to other DVD players). The picture, however, was amazing. My friend has a Yamaha player with a Mitsubishi 40" tube. I dare say that the picture on my Toshiba 32" was far superior. It is the best purchase I have made in a while.

Strength:

Provides 24/96 digital output, excellent video/audio

Weakness:

Does not play CDRs

I bought the Model 3700 to go with my Sony N9000 Preamp after I read a favorable review in HT Magazine. One reason I went with this model is because it was one of the few DVD players that outputs 24/96. I bought a few of the Chesky 24/96 DVD audio disks and they do sound awsome through the Denon 3700 into my Sony preamp, Outlaw 750 amp. and Jamo Concert 11 speakers.

I had no problems with hook-up. The picture is beautiful. The audio seemed to be a little bright at first, but sounds better each day. The unit is well built. The remote is functional but not impressive.

I bought this unit for $729 mail order from ABC Stereo. They were nice enough to negotiate the price down from their list ($795, I think) but they gave me a bit of a runaround with regard to shipping. It took two weeks to get from NJ to NY and they never seemed to be able to give me the UPS tracking number. I suspect they just didn't ship the unit for several days after I ordered it, though I was repeatedly assured that they did.

I almost went with the Sony 7700 model for about the same price, but because it would not output 24/96 I decided on the Denon.

Fine audio and video output, beefy unit, (5) CD changer, super CD sound as well as DVD

Weakness:

None yet...

This unit has performed as promised. True, a bit slow on start up of DVD's, but if this is the worst of it, cannot complain!! Purchased from senagfl@aol.com, quick service and the right price (saw for as low as $699 later). Stunning video, and of course, even better after purchased S video cables (you would think at least one would have come with the unit!!).

Anyway, after much reviewing and looking, this unit, especially at the price, is a great choice - especially since it plays CD's so well!!

Strength:

Heavy, firm, stable, beautiful picture, marvelous DAC-CD sound.

Weakness:

Remote from chimps. Doesn't play CDRs.

I got this new, open box from a private sale. I'd been burned on my first DVD carousel so I was extremely wary of this deal. However, the Denon had received high marks for quality in the past and my old Denon CD player had lasted 15 years. I find this DVD player to be marvelous. The picture quality is great, surround sound is excellent and it works like a charm. The real kicker though is when I use it for 2 channel stereo. The DAC's contained in the player sound smoother and more musical than those contained in my Onkyo 787 and I've been using it for all my prerecorded CD's

As for its drawbacks. How you can sell a 1,000 dollar piece of equipment that CAN'T play CDR's is unfathomable to me. Thank god I kept my Yamaha 675 in the rack as well. Also, the tray is much noisier than the Yammie and the remote really, really sucks. No back lighting, same size keys and counter-intuitave button placement.

Strength:

Very good video performance, five disc capability, solid construction(except the disc drawer),24/96khz capability, pretty blue LED.

Weakness:

Audio quality on cd playback is a little edgy on highs. Lacks spaciousness and dynamics also. The remote is a cheap Panasonic model with buttons made for kids' fingers.

After owning the Toshiba SD-3109 and experiencing multiple reading problems, I set out on a quest for a DVD that could perform well on audio and video. Denon has always seemed to produce quality components(some exceptions) and upon seeing their latest player equipped with a 5-disc drawer and 24/96khz capability, this seemed like a very promising unit for me. I had auditioned this unit at a local A/V store and thought the performance was very good, but after I actually purchased it, was a little disappointed in the sound quality when playing cd's through the analog outs. They sounded lifeless and lacked the detail, spaciousness, and bass performance that most $300 players achieve...especially considering the $1000 tag they put on it! It did perform well in the video category and the little blue light is eye catching. I couldn't complain except for the miniscule remote where all the buttons are crammed together and of the same size. I returned this player after auditioning the Pioneer Elite DV-05(purchased for $599) and the Denon units side by side for a little performance "showdown". Noting that the Pioneer is only a single disc player, I was simply amazed at how well it produced audio recordings as well as the awesome video that was produced. Blacks were black, colors were neutral, and the cd audio was outstanding rating, in my eyes, up there with some $700-$800 dedicated cd players on the market. I've finally found my player and this one will stay on my rack for a while to come. I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for great audio and video performance without spending over $1000. As for Denon, they can do better!

Strength:

Picture and sound quality.

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R, DVD+RW, MP3's.

Overall, the Denon 3700 DVD player is great!! The sound and picture quality is one of the best I've seen, hands down.

My single biggest complaint - the player does not play CD-R, DVD+RW, and MP3's. With the price of DVD burners dropping by the day, this is a huge disadvantage!! However, when I bought the player, DVD burners were not even in the market, so I really shouldn't complain. But it should at least play CD-R's!!

At any rate, I believe there must be a chip out there to override the CD-R, DVD+RW, and MP3 play back. If anyone out there knows where I could get this chip, let me know...

Strength:

Awesome picture, accurate colors, great sound, solid build, five disc, and front display fades when starts to play.

Weakness:

Remote is too small, unit skips to next disc sometimes when watching movie, haven't been able to HDCD to kick in, doesn't play CD-R or CD-RW, front display chracters are to close together to be able determine what's what.

Picture is awesome but I don't have a big screen yet. So it's really hard to tell just how good of a picture this unit reproduces. Waiting for prices to come down on HDTV. I've looked at smog or smokey sceens no signs of digitizations. Color reproduction is superb this I know. Nice brilliant colors. It has some nice features such as DVD dialogue enhancers, virtual surround sound, dolby digital, dts, HDCD, and being able to dim display down during playing movie.

Sound is superb on movies. A little miffed that I haven't been able to HDCD to kick in on enhanced CDS. Sound is very good on music though.

Main problems are terrible remote, very noisey and annoying disc changer, hard to read front display, sometimes movie skips to the next disc right out of the blue for no reason, doesn't play CD-R or CD-RW, and not a progressive scan player.

Overall I'm satisfied it's a good player but for the money it should of been better. I'm not talking sound or picture just feature and function wise. At this price range it should be quiter, better remote control, play CD-R, CD-RW, DVD audio, and progressive scan.

So value rating I'm giving it a 3 star because of limited features and clumsy functions. Overall I'm going to give it a 4 star for superb picture and great sound.

Strength:

a lovely voice

Weakness:

body odor, small remote buttons, display screen, schizo disk behavior

I won her at auction for a surprisingly low price of $289 (factory refurbished). I have to
thank President Bush for this nice little gift. Be warned: UBid does NOT double box, so she
probably got bumped around a bit before getting to my place. Luckily this big 20lbs mama is
built like a tank, unlike most of the flimsy, feather-weight units that weigh in at a mere 5lbs.

So what are my first impressions of her after she entered my pad? She looks stunning, with an
attractive blue LED that lights up during AL24 playback and a dreamy orange LED for HDCDs.
Pretty... However, she smells like a bad date who has cluelessly showered herself in perfume.
She reeks man... well, maybe it's not quite that bad, but she does gives off a strange odor.
I think it's just the transformer burning off some lacquer or something (similar to what my old
NAD amp did). The stench is most intense after it has been running for hours, but it appears
to be going away, like worn perfume.

It's hard to push her buttons because the size of these buttons, on the remote, are made for
Hobbits. It's also top-heavy and it feels unbalanced in the hand while attempting to maneuver
your thumb for a button strike.

She's also hard to read, especially from a distance because of its miniscule light-up symbols
on the display screen. Also her DiskTitleChapterTime indicators are all squished together.

So far, I've noticed that she has one odd, schizo-like behavior. While playing one DVD, she can
unexpectedly skip to the next disk. This was also reported in an earlier review. Both of our
units came from the same place, so maybe there's a trend here. Hmmm...

How does she look on TV? Well, I only have a small set, so I'm not the best one to judge, but
if my sudden onset to drool is any indication, then you get the idea...

OK... now I should get to the real reason why your reading this: how does she sound? Well, the
DVM1800 and the DVM3700 are practically twin sisters, except that the DVM3700 cost a few
hundred $ more to take out. So where does the money go? Well, it pays for her physical
augmentations like the AL24 processor (where digital signals go through some upsampling to pull
out the low level information), better digital filters, a beefy power supply and other audio
upgrades. Whatever they did with her voice, boy, can she ever sing now. What clarity and
resolution, from the soprano lines all the down to the sub-terranean bass notes. Her voice is a
touch on the bright side, and I'd prefer a bit more warmth in the mids, but she oozes with sonic
fidelity and my CD/HDCD/DVDs have never sounded better.

Although she has some small quirks, I guess I can live with them, so I've decided let her move
in with me for the long term.

Sound on CD.

Weakness:

none

Sound quality is great. CD sound 10x better on this player than the others I own. DVD video is about the same as the others. DVD sound is great. It weighs about 25lbs. Have 4 dvd players in my house and this blows them away in overall features(almost to many for me). With my NAD receiver, AR Speakers and now this Denon DVD I believe I am now low audiophile grade. The difference between this setup and my all sony is night and day. Almost embarrased to own sony stuff now.

Strength:

2-ch CD sound; movie picture quality; build quality

Weakness:

the usual remote control complaint

This is a follow-up to my earlier review. I have investigated the progressive scan hype on the picture side, and the SACD/DVD-A hype on the sound side. I assumed I would sell my Denon and uggrade. The verdict? I still own and enjoy my DVM-3700!

On the picture side, progressive scan (I demoed Sony/Pioneer/Toshiba) DVDs looked slightly better on my world-class Toshiba TW40X81 tv (Stereophile Guide to Theatre's best tv under $5k). But the difference wasn't anywhere close to *blowing away* my trusty Denon. It just wasn't that big a deal (yes, I have world class cabling as well). Don't believe the hype folks...yeah, it was slightly better but you'd have to strain to see the improvements. In short, the Denon produces an excellent picture.

On the sound side, I've demoed DVD-A and SACD to hear for myself if it really is the new thing. First of all, DVD-A discs basically stink in terms of production quality. Who wants to hear the guitarist behind you and the singer in front when in reality the guitarist is behind the singer on stage?! Anyway, on 2-ch sound, SACD is fabulous. But so is the Denon...and it's stunning fed into my Bel Canto Dac1. So yes, I found SACD to sound a little better than the Denon alone. But I preferred my Denon/DAC1 combo to the Sony 9000ES SACD/DVD/CD player. Since there are millions of CDs and only a handful of over-priced SACDs and DVD-As, why would I give up a combo that makes CDs sound fabulous? Plus give up the 5-disc convenience?

In short, the Denon DVM-3700 is a fabulous stand-alone CD player (with HDCD), a fabulous 5-disc transport for a DAC/upsampler, and a great DVD movie player. It continues to offer outstanding value...which is why I remain a satisfied owner.
