Strength:

Good picture quality and sound.

Weakness:

Very cheap looking remote. Software glitch causing subtitles to come on during movie playback. Extremely poor design of the button configuration on the unit itself.

I hate to say this but I'm extremely disappointed in this player. The graphical interface is better on a atari from 20 years ago. The remote looks cheaply made and poorly designed, with all too many buttoms smallish in size and bunched together. The front of the player has buttons located in odd places(under the tray). I too have had problems with the subtitles coming on during playback of a movie. The picture quality is very good and the sound is crisp and vibrant. I've come to expect much better from Denon and this is unacceptable quality.

Strength:

Picture quality and CD sound is excellent

Weakness:

Subtitle ghosts, doesn't play VCD's

Piece of Junk - it's a Denon which should mean quality. Intermittent subtitles appear for no reason. Same problem with model 1800. The new model 1815 may have the same problem - beware

Strength:

Great Video & Audio performance for the price, Well built, Clean, functional and nice looking design.

Weakness:

On-screen display capabilities a little week, no discrete 5.1 dts outputs.

I was not looking for a carosel, but fell into this unit becuase it fit my smallish budget (~300) and had all of the features I was looking for, primarily Faroudja DCDi and 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown audio D/A converter. After watching and listening to this player for awhile I noticed that I wasn't getting tired of watching or listening to it. Most of the DVD players I had owned or tried in the past seemed OK at first but became less enjoyable over time. This problem was usually more apperent while listening then watching. The Denon has a very smooth and easy to listen to quality about it, while remaining well defined. Its video quality seemed to have a similar appeal, less edgy while still sharp, with very good error correction. I have kids that don't always keep the DVD's in great shape, so this is important in my house.

Strength:

Progressive scan picture and Audio DAC's

Weakness:

Manufacturing defect that displays subtitles when the subtitle feature is turned off.

This player has great video and audio repreduction. Smooth defined picture and the audio DAC's are among the best available. The only problem is there is a defect in the circuitry that displays the subtitles of a movie during playback even though the subtitle feature is turned off. I returned the first player becuase of it and the second player did the same thing. Tweeter has been great with exchanging it for something else. It's a shame because the Denon dvm-1805 would be the player to have if it were'nt for the defect.
