Strength:

-looks good on large projection -tremendous sound quality -great performance to cost ratio.

Weakness:

-Subtitle pop ups every now and then...depends on the movie -Limited features..but not all that important -a wee bit grainy for dark scenes

I recently purchased the Denon 900 to replace a Sony DVD I have had for a couple of years now, and I have to say that I was very impressed with the overall picture quality this player has. Hooked up to my 65" Mitsubishi gold plus series, with Monster 3 components, wow! Now for the money it is definately not a top-of-the-line player but it gets the job done. It does tend to get a bit grainy during darker scenes but it still shines. Music also kicks on this player which is a huge bonus. Overall for the money and if you are a budget concious type, then this is a DVD player worth considering.

Strength:

Great Picture, Good Sound

Weakness:

What that other person said about the subtitles, very strange...just once in a movie if that.

Let's see I tried the really expensive Denon DVD player the one with the Silicon Graphics Chip, and it had about an 800.00 listing price I believe, and then I tried the 1600 for 400.00 and then I tried this one. I was going to get the 1600, and then this one came out and hey I can save 100.00 in the price and get the same picture, and I can spend the 100.00 and get really good, well nice cables and be happy. It's a great DVD player, all I know is my friend and myself watched about 4 movies on all of the above DVD players, oh yea throw in a toshiba too, and this one at this price point was the best for me...The denon at 800.00 was better but not by 500.00 dollars for my taste.

Strength:

great sound awesome picture in progressive scan tray open button on remote progressive/interlaced scan switch can select between screen aspect ratios

Weakness:

none doesn't play dvd-audio or sacd

I purchased this unit when it first came out. I have enjoyed it since. I only buy Denon products, because i am very impressed with the build quality of their components. I love the brushed aluminum face on their components. The DVD-900 has great picture quality in progressive and interlaced scan. I have it hooked up to a 36" RCA HDTV. I use Monster Cable's Video 3 Component wire for video hookup to the tv. I am a true believer that your equipment is only as good as the wire you use to hook them up. And i think Monster Cable is great for audio and video interconnects. I have expierenced the subtitle popping up once a movie, and it only happens when you can't hear the dialog very well, so i think it happens for the reason so you can know what is being said. I don't think its a flaw. The same thing happens on my brother's player. The audio on this player is awesome. The fact that the D/A converters are 192/24, is also a plus. I am not bothered by the noise this player makes. In my opinion you buy a dvd player for it's quality not the amount of sound it makes when you open and close the tray. I am also going to be purchasing the Denon 3803 Reciever soon to match with this player. All in all a great buy. Great job Denon.

Strength:

Denon name, progressive scan player for moderate price. Has both sets of digital connections--some companies like Panasonic dont offer this. Picture quality. Plays everydisc I've thrown at it.

Weakness:

Slow and noisy. Subtitles pop up occasionally The "Denon" label on the front of my player was attached upside down from the factory :-(

I've had this DVD player literally since the first day it came out (I kept calling my local Denon dealer asking if he had gotten it in yet) and have been happy with it for the most part. I have read all the other reviews here and have shared some of the negative experiences. I do find that it is noisy and slow. I've also had the problem where for no reason at all, the subtitles pop up on the screen-but it is only 1 line and it never happens more than once during a movie, if it happens at all. As far as poor picture quality or graininess, I do not notice this at all. I replaced a Toshiba 3109 like someone else here did and the picture on this player is far superior. I even had a Toshiba 5200 for while running side by side with this player. Even though the 5200 was $70 less and had DVD-Audio playback and also played VCD's it went back to the store after my head to head comparison. I'm not saying this is the greatest DVD player ever made, simply that its shortcomings dont bother me as much as they did some other people and that to me the picture is great. I have it hooked up to a Sony 36XBR400 TV and this TV has looked incredible with just about anything that I've hooked up to it. When I compared the DVD players side by side, it was little things that stood out to me, like clearer text and the edges seemed smoother on images, so much so that I really noticed a big difference when switching between the inputs on the TV. I did this by hooking up DVD players to 2 differnet inputs and putting copies of the same movies in both players and hitting play at the same time(this is also where I realized how slow the Denon player really was-but again, to me this is very minor-who cares if I have to wait 4 seconds longer for a movie to start as long as it looks better). And because I'm anal, I also tried each DVD player on each input, just to make sure that there was not a differnce with the TV inputs. One thing I did notice though, was that the cables I used made a HUGE difference. Better cables looked much better. At first, I thought the Denon looked like crap, but when I realized that the cables were at fault and I leveled the playing field so to speak, I noticed how good the picture from this player really was. SO for those of you that complained about the picture from this player-were you using crappy cables? I know cable quality is a delicate topic amongst Audiophiles, and a lot of people swear that cheap cables are just as good as expensive ones--but in this case it made a very big differnce. I'll assume that those that were unhappy with picture quality were using Component video cables and not S-video or regular interconnects. I recommend this player to anyone looking for a progressive scan player for under $300. For those of you that can pick this player up for closer to $200, I say dont hesitate at all. Again, if your biggest complaint is that it makes too much noise when you first put a disc in--is that really worth not buying a player with good audio and video? Are these people loading discs in the middle of the night with an infant sleeping in the room? This player is for Home Theater, which is meant to be loud. As far as being slow, that just gives me extra time to get comfortable on the sofa before the movie starts.

Strength:

The remote is laid out well. Plus, unlike Yamaha and some other players, there is standby power.

Weakness:

Video picture--with progressive scanning, component video and plasma screen--is poor. In fact, a cheaper non-progressive Sony video yields better results (in that our plasma screen, when receiving a non-progressive video, has a chip to simulate progressing scanning). It could be an interaction between the chip on the Denon and the chips on our plasma screen. But unfortunately pictures look grainy and unappealing.

Agree with prior review. Transport is noisy and sounds broken. Picture is very grainy in progressive mode and in fact is a degradation from our non-progressive Sony machine at same price.

Strength:

Sound when listening to a CD.

Weakness:

Noisy and slow Transport, picture is too soft and grainy in either Progressive Scan or Interlaced mode even though connected through component video. Subtitles pop up once or twice during a movie. It also is very limited and crude in features. Zoom is a joke.

Don't waste your money. I bought this because I have a Sony HD Ready Projection TV (53HS30). I was using a Toshiba SD3109. Well After 2 weeks I've switched back to the Toshiba.

Strength:

Nothing stands out.

Weakness:

Soft picture, basic features.

Bought this dvd player because it had decent specs and thought that it would be an improvment over the mass marketed dvd offerings in the $150-$225 range. Overall, it didn't stand out over the Sony's and panasonics I have had. I have since purchased a pioneer 656A and have enjoyed a sharper, more vivid picture. I have also owned a Marantz 4200, Pioneer 45 & 47, and Rotel 1080 so I know what I am talking about. This would be a competitive dvd player in the $150-$200 class but there are better choices unless you can find it at a bargain.

Strength:

almost flawless video decoding, seamless layer switch, great audio.

Weakness:

minimal player display (track # on audio discs only shows on TV display), goofy fast-forward operation (pauses a bit long before going back to play), slow at reading the TOC and becoming ready to play the disc, eject on front panel doesn't work unless disc is "stopped".

Stunning video quality, solid features, better remote that previous generation players. Audio quality is great, but can't attribute to player since it just passes bit stream to Denon AVR 1603 receiver.

Strength:

Sharp picture, beautiful color--maybe due to progressive scan alone but the Faroudj chip may also help with the great picture. Buffer cures annoying layer change problems. Great audio sound.

Weakness:

Subtitle defect--bummer because this makes a fantastic player unlivable and hence the low rating. Maybe you'll have better luck than us. No backlight on remote. Starts in default Black level mode, must turn it off for true contrast.

Purchased the Denon DVD-900 as an upgrade hoping to eliminate layer change freezing issues on a low-end Pioneer player and also to give progressive scan a try on our new Mitsubishi widescreen. The Denon has a fantastic picture!--sharp, vibrant colors, and almost no artifacts. The 2MB memory buffer completely eliminates layer change pausing/delays. The sound quality for CDs is truly Denon quality. Fantastic player... However, this player has had sporadic caption/subtitle problems. Subtitles will pop up for a section or two of dialogue, then disappear. Totally unpredictable, does it on about 1 of 3 discs for 1-3 times per disc. We've been through 3 units trying to find a unit without this firmware bug. No luck, I give up and we're going to exchange/upgrade to the DVD-1600--just love the memory buffer and the Faroudj chip effects.

Strength:

The picture is crisp in interlace mode. On screen display is easy to navigate. Great sound, nice chip set.

Weakness:

The only issue that I have with the unit is more about the TV I tried to use it on. I own a 43" digital ready Hitachi and, since it has a "built in" progressive scan simulator (HDTV) feature that can't be turned off, the progressive scan function on the DVD player doesn't operate (video turns on and off). I have owned a Sony progressive scan DVD without any combatibility or video issues.

Purchased this particular unit because I have had a wonderful experience with a quality receiver from this manufacturer (3802) and looked forward to using the progressive scan feature of this player for 3D-type video on my digital TV.
