Strength:

Incredible video and audio quality for the price. Gives you all the decoders you need plus DVD-Audio. It automatically reads the best audio format to play. Has menu to setup the player very easily and many features to modify.

Weakness:

When the player reaches the end of the DVD-Audio disc, the display just reads PLAY, but it doesn't do anything. It doesn't take it back to the top menu automatically.

I needed an upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player. I wanted a higher quality unit and thought I might as well get one with DVD-Audio capability so I won't have to by another one down the road. I have not seen another progressive scan DVD player to compare it to, but the video is superb. The video alone makes this player worth the money. The audio is just phenomenal. The MP3 CDs work great and sound great, plus you get 10 hours of music on 1 disc. The icing on the cake is the DVD-Audio. This makes my system (DENON AVR-2801 with Klipsch Satellite Quintet speakers) sound very nice. I don't think I could be any happier with the player without spending an extra $800 and getting the DVD-3800. This unit does not feel heavy, but it definately doesn't feel cheap or look cheap. I think it looks very nice sitting in the rack. The remote works fine and is very simple to use. It isn't backlit, but you can feel the button's function.

Strength:

Good sound and picture.

Weakness:

Won't read some CD's.

I bought this unit based on the reviews on this site. I took a chance and bought a re-furbished unit, since it was so cheap. I agree with others that it is light weight and feels flimsy. The picture and sound quality are much better than the Samsung V1000 combo unit that I had been using. I am a little disappointed in that the unit won't read a couple of my CD's. Even though the Samsung wasn't very good, I couid play everything on it. I've only had the unit for two weeks but overall I'm happy with it. I'm using it with a Denon AVR1802 and Paradigm surround speakers. Given the quality of the Denon reciever, I figured the DVD player would fit my surround system pretty well.

Strength:

sound is very accurate and very nice, picture quality very, very good

Weakness:

cheap feel and look to it, remote is the same way. the techs at denon should have applied as much energy on the look and feel as they did to the inside of picture and sound

the audio store where i do business asked me to give the denon 1600 a try, out of the box i was disapointed, it feels cheap lightweight in construction and look is kinda plain. internally it must have the goodies the picture is nice and the audio is superb in the 2 channel mode if you hook it up this way. upon turning it on for the first time i felt i was running my technics dvd-a10 all over again, the remote for the technics worked for the denon and the specs for the technics dvd-a10 were actually better than this denon.as wonderfull as this denon is for me, its going back to the dealer it has really no justification for replacement of the technics, also did anyone notice that the display does not show dolby digital or dts when they are in use? no big deal the reciever will show it, i just thought it was not very professional

Strength:

Film like image. images pop off of the screen. progressive scan set-up is easy. optical connection improves sound.

Weakness:

remote is not backlit cannot adjust progressive image on widescreen TV.

I have recently purchased an HDTV, and I must admit that prior to owning one I always just had any old DVD player. On a regular TV who cares, your missing a lot anyway. I have always been more concerned about audio than video anyway...well until now. First off seeing things on an HDTV in widescreen is enough to make anyone stop going to the theater. I initially set-up my samsung TXM3097WHF with a crappy phillips progressive scan dvd player from target. I watched my movies and they were skipping, and always looked pretty grainy. I thought, wow I am not really that impressed. After reading about the benefits of upgrading the DVD player I decided to go full out and purchase this Denon. I was skeptical at first because this player did not have a coaxial input just optical I was, however pleasently surprised more on that later. Setting it up was a cinch Hit the green button for progressive scan pop a DVD in...WOW no grain perfect picture. 100% improvement colors are soft, and very film like, no artifacts. Using the optical out improved the sound with my Denon receiver noticably. This player is reference quality a steal for the price.

Strength:

Strong audio AND video section. plays CD audio disks. has a 6ch direct input section. Adjustable contrast color and brightness (with progressive scan off)

Weakness:

cheap remote (so what!) I use my universal remote. I didn't even have to reprogram it, since my old player was a Panasonic

I was always under the assumption that cd players were cd players and dvd players were dvd players no matter how much you paid for them. Boy, was I wrong. I can definitely tell the difference in picture and especially sound. It's well worth every dime I paid for it. I'm glad I took the chance. I would never be satisfied with my old dvd player after listening and watching this one. That's the bottom line.

Strength:

Audio Quality, Sage Chip, DVD-Audio Bass Management, Overall Performance

Weakness:

Remote Control, Lacks Some Basic DVD-Video Options, No Coaxial Output

I orginally took a chance on buying the 1600 after reading the glowing review of the unit's video performance in Home Theater Secrets. The player essentially uses the same excellent Sage chip that is found in Panasonic's higher-end players (and some others). In fact, the Denon seems to be an almost exact copy of the Panasonic RP-82 (now discontinued) from a VIDEO perspective. On video material, I was pleased to verify that the player does not have the dreaded chroma bug, and it had excellent color rendition as well as superb video resolution. The section that sets the Denon apart from the excellent Panasonic, and many other players in the $600 and below price range is its SUPERB audio section. I used to belog in the "all CD players sound the same" camp, until I listened to CDs through the Denon's analog output. I really can't explain why, but CDs sounded more alive... with better resolution on the top end, and a great spaciousness. Maybe the Burr-Brown DACs used in the audio section of the player are the culprits... All I know is that I have not heard better out of a DVD player in its price range (or higher). Other notable audio features include DVD-Audio functionality, with bass management that works (although it is not perfect). Also included is functionalty to turn off the video section when playing CDs or DVD-audio. There are a couple negatives to the player I should mention... The remote is cheap looking and it is not backlit, nor are the keys glow in the dark. Denon could definitely do better here. Also in need of improvemnt is the general build quality. The inside components are superb, but the unit is very lightweight, leaving one to believe that some corners were cut somewhere (although I must admit I have not noticed it in the sound or video). Fianally, there is no coaxial output (no problem for me, as I am using the Toslink anyway), and the player lacks some basic DVD-video functionalities like zoom, and a time remaining counter (although it perplexingly has one for audio). All in all, a terrific buy and highly recommended!

Superb video and audio DVD AUDIO capabilty

Weakness:

remote could be better

Bought it on a whim just to go with a new HDTV. Other than the fact I could have scored it cheaper, I have no regrets. Faroudja came up in my research when I bought the TV so this was a big selling point for me. The video is fantastic. It does seem to have a projected feel. Not "laser" sharp, but not grainy either - it's just right. Colors are bright, and do not bleed. The audio is as good. DVD Audio, in particular, is amazing to listen to. Improved bass mamagement would be nice. I do not know if my receiver's bass management is active in 5.1, but it really hasn't posed a problem for either way. Sounds great! The remote does have it's flaws - can't hit progressive scan (why would you want to anyway)or audio only. Beyond that I have yet to find too much to complain about with this unit. Strength:

Extremely detailed video for DVDs and rich audio quality for CDs.

Weakness:

Only one minor personal quibble. Even though the color out of the box is natural and realistic, I like colors that are slightly pumped and extra vivid.

I am a good example of an audio/video enthusiast who doesn't have a lot of money to spend, but wants to start somewhere to maintain his system. Most of my equipment is old and rather than replace a few things with poor quality items, I chose to replace my VHS and CD player with a good quality DVD. (my UltimateTV takes cares of the video recording) And even though I am playing DVDs on an old SDTV Zenith, the picture quality, fed interlaced is extremely detailed and realistic. I ran a simple test by toggling back and forth between my DirecTV satelite feed and the same movie that I had on DVD. I found that the picture although slightly more subdued in color, was more realistic and far more detailed. The sound is also much richer then my old CD player. All in all, this player has increased my movie watching experience greatly and my music listening as well. The value, since the price dropped, is wonderful. I have seen a few online stores who sell it for $380's-$390's (no tax or shipping) Pretty good for a model with a MSRP of $499.

Strength:

Plays DVD-audio to an A+ Controls the colours very beautyful The audio-only mode (less unnessary noise)

Weakness:

Do not support super-VCD and Divx video discs

Earlier this week i purchased a Denon DVD1600 at "Hifi-klubben" (the store with the most hifi-knowhow in Denmark). The DVD1600 fits my Denon AVR-1803 AV-receiver both in design and in sound. At first, I was a bit skeptic of buying the Denon DVD1600 because it is a rather low-price DVD-Audio/Video-player. But when I had plugged it in and had but on Queen´s "A Night at the Opera" (DVD-audio) all my skeptisisme was but aside. It also plays DVD-video very beautiful. Espessially the black colour-tones are mastered with arrogance.
