Strength:

Awesome CD and CDR playback

Weakness:

Bad E-prom chip, which would not play some movies, or parts of others

ATTENTION: I just recieved my Denon 1500 back from Denon. My player had been having the same problems many of you have listed here. It would not play past a certain scene on T2:The Ultimate Edition, and would skip around on the scenes it would play. It would not even play past the title screen on the Patriot. Since the Patriot is one of my favorite movies, this was completely unacceptable!!!!

Since I bought the unit from an internet retailer, I decide to confront Denon directly about the problem. I was suprised to find, contrary to many of the reviews I have read here that I had very little trouble getting through to Denon service, and after a couple of phone calls was told my
player was made before the release of the new Eprom chip and that it needed the new software. Denon gave me an RA number and had me ship the unit back to them so they could upgrade the software free of charge.

Great news, I recieved the unit back yesterday and it will now play the Patriot and T2 Ultimate Edition. I plan on checking on the reported Independence Day and Girl Uninterrupted errors soon.

I encourage all of you who have not already sent this unit back to contact Denon and get your Eprom upgraded! I only takes around 2 weeks total ground shipping time included!! I was beginning to wonder about the quality of the previously great DENON name myself. I am giving DENON 5 stars for addressing this problem and coming up with a solution.

Thanks and I hope this helps!!!!!!

Michael

Strength:

Clean Picture, Strong detailed sound, great build quality.

Weakness:

Long loading time.

Reason for my purchase is that I go the Unit for 360 while my local dealer was closing down. But the picture is very good, and the sound is also very good. But it would be nice if they good make the unit sound as worm as the Marantz.

Similar Products Used:

None, but I have tried a lot of units for many hours. Like the Onkyo's, Sony's, e Marantz.

Strength:

Audio, looks, prestigious name

Weakness:

reliability, heat, remote

I purchaced the sony 360 whilst waiting for my 1500 to arrive. Although returned the sony when the denon arrived, I may have been premature! on to the review..

I already own a 3300 Denon receiver, so this was esthetically a nice match. this unit looks pretty darn good! In an effort to not repeat what almost everyone else has said, Ill be brief. The remote SU*KS. period. The Lip sync wasnt bad, but it was a few MS off (noticable if your looking for it) The Unit gets VERY hot (inside a cabinet). It locked up 0:1:50 into Saving Ryans Privates, and needed a "reboot". (was fine after the power cycled, wierd).
Positives:

DTS and DD were awesome! Cd's sound cleaner than Ive ever heard on my equiptment, looks cool.

Conclusion:

I paid 225, shipping included, from Ubid. The Sony 360 cost 250 with tax at Circuit city (cheaper when on sale). and I have to say, the sony is a superior machine in every way, faster spin up time, no muss, also has a metal face, same outputs, a perfect remote (if your not using a 3rd party universal), a superior OS menu, and sony reliability. At my local hifi store, they have the d-1500 marked at 499.00! DO NOT PAY THAT MUCH FOR IT. I am going to keep the Denon siply because I am a Vein b*stard and like the way it looks in my cabinet. My recomendation is that if you can buy this for 225 or less, than you cant really go wrong for the prestigious (lately????) name. If you payed any more than that, I feel you could have done better with ANY other brand!
All 3 stars are based on the audio performance.
just my $.03 worth!

This product has just been returned and exchanged for a Sony. Try the following. Put in the Eagles CD "HOTEL California", and try to play track 1. The title track... It WONT PLAY!!! PERIOD!!! Now try to play the movie Girl, interupted... All that comes up is the main menu... You cant get out of it.. I thought it was just my player, however the one at the dealer did the same thing. Since this product does not do as intended, play cds and movies, IT FAILS!!!! PERIOD>>>>>

Didn't keep it long enough to discover everything

18 months ago I built a decent mass market HT setup consisting of a Denon AVR 3200, Toshiba 3108, Paradigm Studio 20s, CC450, PS1200 and ADP 170s, and a 5.1 Millennium 2.4.6 external DTS decoder. Everything's been pretty decent so to speak.

I had the Toshiba come DOA and had it fixed, but there was a firmware issue with some discs that had DVD/Rom content on them such as ALIEN and a couple of discs from the series From the Earth to the Moon. They will lock up the 3108. Since I had the thing fixed and since it was only one ALIEN disc that wouldn't boot up, I declined to send the Toshiba back to Tennessee for a refurbed unit which would have cost
$75 to do. I lived with this for a year until Tuesday, when I bought the ID4 dvd and it wouldn't spool up. Time to send this unit to a sister and get a new one.

I went to the local Brandsmart Warehouse and began looking at the Toshiba 2200. Since I had good luck w/the Denon 3200 and since they had the Denon 3300 there looking nice and pretty, I decided to replace the 3200 w/the 3300 and I
purchased the Denon 1500 (prior to reading the reviews here) for $400 + tax. I got home and logged on to AR and was a bit disappointed w/the ratings. I almost returned it
unopened, but ended up hooking it up late last night.

My first movie was ID4 and while it booted up, it kept repeating certain portions during the movie. Probably 8-9 passages lasting about 30 seconds to over a minute. Not at
chapters, but just out of the blue. I have a nice two channel system and an Auric Illuminator cd/dvd enhancer/cleaner and ended up treating the ID4 disc, but to no avail. It still skipped. I then watched Stigmata without incident, so maybe it was the disc.

Anyway, I did notice certain portions of both discs maybe go out of sync. I don't think I imagined it either, not blatant, but a few seconds here and there. This was enough.

Today, I packed it up and exchanged it for the T.2200 for a savings of $185. I haven't unboxed the T. yet, but I was very disappointed with the Denon's slow load time, the small
clumsy remote and sync problems.

I apologize for the lack of time given this unit, but I'm a big Denon fan and wanted it to work out.

Well, as the French say, Cie La Vie.
