Strength:

As a DVD/VCR combo it is a compact unit and takes up less space. It has AV input so you can connect you video game console to it if your TV only has one set of AV inputs, that way to play games you just turn on the VCR. I found no reduction in audio or video quality by doing so.

Weakness:

Poorly built. Poor tracking. The unit regularly makes an electronic popping sound, as if it builds up static electricity. It will most likely break down on you within the one-year manufacturers warranty period but you would be better off putting the $24 it will cost you to mail it back towards a different player.

I purchased this unit for the combined DVD/VCR feature in order to save space. At first it worked well but all of a sudden the DVD player quit providind video, audio from DVDs came through but no image. It would also occasionally make an electronic popping sound, I was not sure if it was the TV or the player. I returned it to Sears for another unit. The second unit played DVDs fine but the tracking on the VCR was poor, I was also getting the popping sound and I thought that was the TV. Within weeks of having the second unit it failed much like the first one. The full money-back period was past but Sears did give me 80% of the original purchase price back. My new Sony DVD player does not make the popping sound so it must have been the Apex.

Strength:

The VCR portion had a quieter rewind than some VCRs I've owned in the past. The VCR had a faster forward speed than I'm used to. It was quieter than my Panasonic VCR playing, rewinding and carrying out commands. I used the DVD only once and it seemed to work fine but it was my first one and I have nothing to compare the action to.

Weakness:

The remote was too small for my average sized male hand. Its buttons were too close together. Programing a recording involved pushing more buttons that were harder to find than I'm accustomed to. I've had better pictures recorded in SLP with previous VCRs.

I owned this VCR/DVD combo eleven days before its tuner broke and it would only pass static through to the TV. To the retailers credit they gave me a full refund. This was my first Apex product.
