Strength:

price features

Weakness:

complex menu interfaces

I picked this model becasue of the features. I also really wanted the MP3 playback. Sometimes the MP3 will stop and squeek and squeal. I also have the same problem playing home made Video CDs in version 1.1 or 2.0. I am looking for a website where I can upgrade the EPROM that might fix these bugs or at least someone who knows which setting I can tweek to get it to not sqeal. Email me if you know.

Strength:

Plenty of outputs for all your othre toys. Perfect match for top notch entertainment. you can play DVD, VCD, MCD, MP3, CDRW, CDR etc. PRICE, PRICE, PRICE.

Weakness:

Be carefull because you can get lost in the maze of options available to you for tweaking. when this does happen, send family away for few, sit-down and have at it. I have change setting and then was unable to play certain DVD, due to speaker selections. "BUT I FIXED IT" HOLLER AT ME IF YOU NEED HELP.

Ok so lets cut to the chase. don't be fooled by the price, because I'm telling you now, this device has every thing you need now and later. I picked it up at Sam's Club for 100.00$. I don't have any problems with telling it like it TIS. If you truly do your homework before you make the buy, you will be pleasantly surprised at the versitility of the unit. progressive scan, componet outputs, center, surround, s-video outs, 5.1, you name it, it's in dare!

Cheap Great picture Cheap MP3 play Cheap

Weakness:

No shuffle play for the MP3 feature. Ever listen to an MP3 CD in the same order (alphabetically) five times in a row? Needless to say, I don''t care for that CD anymore. :O) Also, according to my experience and other reviews, quality doesn''t seem to be the benchmark for any of the Apex products.

My first experience with DVD For the price (at that time), it couldn''t be beat. I was also interested in the MP3 playback feature. Less than a year after I got it, the LED display went dark though the DVD player still operated. Now the remote won''t work and I have to use the controls on the front face. But, the player still works. Guess it''s time to dig out the receipt and see if Sams will swap it out...

Strength:

Price, low parts count, versital formats.

Weakness:

Forward and reverse scan awkward to use. (You have to go into a sub-menu)

I bought a Toshiba 42" projection TV and I wanted to explore the limits of just how good this TV was. I have a Denon 1500 DVD that I paid $500 when DVD''s first came out, but it was not progressive scan. So I figured for $130 the Apex was worth a try. I could not tell the difference between the interlaced and progressive scan settings. On the plus side the picture is as lest as good, as the much more expensive Denon. A lot of reviews I''ve read complained of a all kinds of problems I have yet to experience. Maybe it''s because I read the manual first? In all, this is the most DVD you can buy for $130

Strength:

Full Featured, Low Price

Weakness:

Not as "clean" looking as other models from major manufacturers.

I recently purchased a Toshiba 43h70 rear Projection HDTV. I am very satisfied with it's performance. I was using a high end (at the time) JVC 701 DVD player which sold a couple of year ago for about $500. The JVC is an excellent unit but does not have a progressive scan feature or DTS decoding. I was reasearching dvd players which have Dolby Digital and DTS converters built in as well as analog 5.1 channel outputs to connect to my Pioneer AV receiver. There were many available from Sony, JVC, Toshiba etc. and ranged in price from about $200 to $400. I stumbled upon this little beauty at Circuit City and it was priced at $159.
I have heard good things about APEX dvd's but was quite skeptical about their quality. I decided to give the unit a try. So far, I am very satisfied with it. It provides all the features which I desired at a very reasonable cost. The unit will play virtually any format available.
I watched several movies with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 and the sound output is excellent. The video quality appears as good as my more expensive JVC, however, I must admit that the difference between interlaced and progressive scan is minimal at best. Both formats produce excellent quality pictures. There are enough bells and whistles (slow motion, zoom, aspect ratio, angles etc) to satisfy most techno-geeks.
In short, I think that this is a wonderful product at a very reasonable cost. I can not write about the long term reliabilty of this product, that will have to wait several months. I am very pleased so far. I recommend this product for those who are looking for a full featured dvd at a reasonable cost.

Strength:

Plays many formats the progressive scan is what I was after

Weakness:

Progressive scan image was smoother with more detail and less jagged edges but colors not as bright as interlaced. Took the unit back. Now realize that there may have been some adjustments I didnt know how to make

If the unit would put out good video the price is great

Pioneer interlaced dvd. Pioneer interlaced picture was better quality than the APEX interlaced picture

Strength:

HDCD (no biggy, some CD's are 20bits) DTS O/P, a lot of output control settings.

Weakness:

Will not record to MD with spacing. I have to setup the spaces manually from the MD. Some old DVD's "Escape from NY" and 2 others I can't remember will not O/P to Dolby I have to set o/p to PCM (no probs with first generation Panasonic A110). Cannot use the RadioShack optical splitter skips every 6 seconds, no prob with my older player. Same with another optical switcher. Quality is the worst I don't think it will last more than 2 or 3 years (something will break)
