Weakness:

Build quaility, remote, setup, video quality. everything.

Bought it for christmas last year, used it for awhile, then the machine started locking up on dvd's. after that, all the buttons fell off the front of the machine. the remote is terrible. if you fast forward, you have to stop the movie then press play again. the menus were crap. brought the POS back and got the toshiba sd-1600 and could'nt be happier

Playes everything. MP's to DVD's AND VCD's

Weakness:

I liked this unit so much I bought one for my Son in-law off of EBAY. When I got it,(from ebay) the 660 was dead. I called the Company Apex and they treated it as if I had bought it from a store. I enclosed my Ebay paper work, (I printed out)and sent them the DVD player. I had it back and repaired in less than 2 weeks. Very pleased.
The DVD has an very good picture. It plays my MP3's if recorded correctly. It plays the family movies and old tapes I have tranferred to VCD's.
Has wonderful web site support.

Strength:

Price, MP3, VCD, Component out, fiber out.

Weakness:

I have not found any. yet.

Man, so far, what a deal!!! It cost just $129 and it plays DVD Mp3 Vcd cdR CDRW. I never heard of this brand until now but I have nothing bad to say about them. Why can this litle po dunk off brand make such a versitile player while sony charges twice the price and has half the features? I use my Sony for DVD playing (because thats all it does and the Apex for Mp3 and VCD. I can't say the Sony holds one advantage over the Apex though. I just use it for my main DVD because it matches my other components. In short, So far its a GREAT player for a GREAT price.

Strength:

Plays mp3's well, fast drive, excellent price

Weakness:

picture freezes & audio out-of-sync issues occurring 3-50 times per movie - this does not happen during mp3 playing

seems to get hot

Overall, a great player with an excellent value.

Brief (.5-1 sec) picture freezes & audio out-of-sync issues occurring 3-50 times per movie - this does not happen during mp3 playing

It has locked up on me once (1 in 15 movies).

This is a great player if it would not freeze.

Overall it is a great player I have no other complaints. The mp3 player is awesome. I'd buy it just for that feature.

Strength:

Reads all formats when working.

Weakness:

Problems with 3 of them RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.

When I purchased this unit, I purchased it because it could read all formats. When I played movies it sounded slow, however when I put in an MP3, I could definitely tell it was slow. Two other units did the EXACT same thing. I would not purchase another one again.

Strength:

Price, format compatability, Sound quality

Weakness:

Picture quality, power switch

This review is actually for the Apex AD-3201 which I think is a replacement for the AD-660.

After less than 3 years of use - my Panasonic A110 started locking up. So I decided to try the bargain route & bought the Apex. I watched about 5 or 6 movies during the 3 weeks I had the Apex. While the sound quality is very good, I noticed the picture quality was not on par with the Panasonic. The picture was not as sharp and most scenes tended to be on the dark side. CD's & CD-R's played fine. Did not try an MP3 CD.

The on/off power switch is the older push button type. There is a power button on the remote but you need to leave the main power switch "on" in order to use the remote power. Another drawback: on the Panasonic you could stop at any point during a movie, power down, then at a later time you could resume watching the movie at the point you left off. Could not do this with the Apex. This is a handy feature for long movies or if you have kids.

The unit has no ventilation holes. DVD disc's were quite warm after playing.

For a first timer who has never owned a DVD player - this is probably a decent buy. It still has better picture quality than VCR. But, for me, the picture quality just was not good enough to keep the unit. So I just went back to Best Buy today and exchanged the Apex for a Panasonic DVD-RV31 which can play all the same formats that the Apex can (neither Sony nor Pioneer have a similarly priced players with these features).

Hopefully the new Panasonic will last longer than my old one.

Strength:

It Played DVD's

Weakness:

It did not play Mp3's even after changing to ISO9660-ISO9660 8.3 character file names from Joliet as sugggested by one of you... ( using Roxio CD Creator 4.03b )...

I took the Apex AD-660 back. It played DVDs well, but not what I intended to use it for and that was to play Mp3's.
I'm sure most people buy it for DVDs and will be happy with it never knowing what a mp3 is. I already owned a DVD GE player which always worked fine for me. I really didnt need another one to play them, just a MP3 player. I did take the AD-500W back as well as the AD-660. I purchased the Apex AD-3201 because it had by far the best sound of the two for mp3's( the AD-500w and the AD-3201 ) the Apex AD-3201 can also play HDCDs as the circuitry improves upon other music formats played in it as well.... I spent too much time messing with this Im out of here!!!

Strength:

Good question

Weakness:

Won't play mp3's

I bought the Apex AD 500w and was looking at Circuit City and saw the AD-660. The sales person came to me as I told him I just purchased the 500w for 98 bucks, he said he could give me the 660 for the same price and it was the better machine...( thinking I would take the 500w back)... Wellll, the 500w played my single session mp3's very well as it was, but thinking I was coming out ahead...boy was I wrong!!!! I pluged the 660 in and put the mp3 disk in that was just played on the Apex 500w and it went crazy ...the counter was going fowards and backwards. It made a funny noise once and stopped. I put another cd that played well on my Apex AD-500w and it did the same... the timer looked funny going backwards...lol afterwards I tried different burns and different brands of disk, both cd-r and cd-rw, they all did the same....I played a dvd ok (twister)...

I was looking at the dates of the same problems you all posted and I could not see any pattern as to why some worked and others didnt. I thought about the firmware, but the newer units as the odler ones, did the same, some worked and some didnt...( random problems )...sad to say I took it back and shot the sales person...I'm now in jail typing this review...:-)
