First I rated the value as 5 because I purchased it after the bluray-HDDVD war was over and I picked it up for 399.00. If I had paid the price when it first came out that was close to 1000.00 the value rating would not have been that high.

It works flawlessly I have had no issues with it. I have not done an AB comparison to another High Def player but on my TV the picture is perfect. I have an older rear projection TV a High def TV and the picture is quite impressive considering. It is better then the under 2000.00 LCD/plasma's and mine is a 57 wide screen and a 61 regular screen

I have purchased quite a few HD-DVD's at blow out prices usually 3 dollars or less. I have not compared the Bluray to the HDDVD on the unit with the same movie but from what I have seen with the Bluray DVD's I have rented I think the HD-DVD will win.

The only issue is the response from the remote is a little slow.

Strength:

Dlal format BD/HD/DVD player movies are less than 50% of blue ray

Weakness:

Slow loading time (whats new ) you must do firmware updates

Samsung BDP-UP 5000 Dual format One advantage to this player is that it plays BD & HD/DVD I know the format lost the HD battle but there are some great deals on movies Frys sells HD/DVD movies at clearence prices try planet earth 4 disc ste for thirty dollars as well a a super clean trensfer of the matrix triiogy also thirty bucks single movies are no more than twelve dollars max. As far as playback you will need to do a firmware update to get the most playback and souround decoing out of the box it wouldnt decode DDTrueHD DDPLUS or DTS MASTER but after the update it unlocked the new sound formats as far as loading its slow but it much better after updates dont get me wrong I only bought this because it was only one of two dual format players ever made picture Quality is verry good as well as upsampling but dont ever pay full price this will remain as a back up player I will be wating on Oppo and dennons 2930 to release time will tell.
