Sony is full of lies just like Bose when it comes to headphones. Bass to 5hz, IMPOSSIBLE. 106db efficiency, IMPOSSIBLE. Got V-600s last summer and
loved them, now I hate that I can't return them (circuit city extented plans
are worth nothing). Makes ears ring after about 2 mins.,even at low levels.
Far superior to Sennheisers because of 5x the watts, lower impedance, and
much more bass. No deep bass despite what sony claims. Unclear in most sounds.
Sony Quality just like their bass lacking junk recievers and portables.

Order Grado SR60s from http://www.headphone.com and be happy you read reviews before spending your money :)
I used to think the Sony MDR-V600s were really good headphones. Until the first time I actually heard some decent headphones.

I'd recommend buying Grado SR60s instead. They're cheaper and they sound better.

The Sony MDR-V600s lack lower bass, lack treble, and have muddy midrange in comparison to the Grado SR60s. The Sony MDR-V600s aren't sealed well enough for that to make much difference anyway.

Strength:

Very comfy, well built, neat looking. decent isolation, sound like a car stereo at 90mph(if you like that- i don't)

Weakness:

Terrible sound. recessed mids. veiled highs. muddy bass.

My Girlfriend owns these cans and one afternoon i was forced to listen to Mahler's 6th symphony (great peice of music) through them because i left my Grados at home by accident. I was really hoping that i would be pleasantly surprised by these cans because i wanted my gf to be able to enjoy decent sound. Instantly i found out it was not to be.
I can honestly say that i didn't enjoy the music. Throughout my listening session i had the horrible feeling that the music wasn't reaching my ears. The strings were a muddy wash and horns had no "bite" whatsoever. i could barely make out what the music was. Bass was just as dissapointing as the midrange- ill defined and boomy. Rock music (hardcore, punk) was similary dissapointing. Needless to say, when i got home and listened through my grados it was like the wool, or excrement, had been removed from my ears.
Some people might think these phones have better or more bass than the grados, but it's simply that there is a constant bass boom, the grados have real bass impact and definition (well at least compared to these terrible sonys.)
I won't even bother comparing these sonys to my etymotics, bucause it'd be like comparing a cowpie (the sonys-a nice looking one) to a diamond (the etys).
sorry sony, these headphones suck.

Strength:

Comfortable, smooth sound

Weakness:

These are great headphones, unless you are commuting with them. I use these with no bass boost on my Panasonic SL-SW850 portable CD player--and with all of the equalizer controls set to "flat" on my home stereo. They sound great with most music I listen to (The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, many others). I heard those negative reviews of the MDR-V600 and would tell them that either you messed around with the tone controls too much or the quality (of the headphones) varies from sample to sample. These fit the classic definition of a set of headphones that deliver "precisely reproduced" sound. My MDR-V6s (which I still own) boost the treble considerably (to the point of sounding shrill--same with those expensive "German" headphones), while my Koss Porta Pros artificially boost the mid-bass to the point of boominess. (I must have gotten a late sample of the Porta Pros that was manufactured by the infamous "audio systems" division.) There may be "better" headphones, but nowhere near as low as the $100 I paid for them.

Strength:

Good sound quality, EXCELLENT construstion (just love the 'dj style' one ear capabiliy), comfort for longterm use

Weakness:

flat bass

You guys are crazy. The are excellent headphones. I admit, their imaging for bass leave something to be imagine, but they're headphones, and they cost under $100. I've been using these on my computer and portable unit for around 5 months now and I am very pleased.

I have used many other models (my other primary pair of headphones is a Grado SR-80 model.) For ultimate fun, use a pair of Grado SR-80's with a sub from your stereo (they're open ear, so you will hear the bass). That was a rush.

Anyhow, I think these are an excellent value and allow 'normal' people to access quality sound without having to go to a lesser known brand. Lets face it, it's sony, it's not gonna be the best. But! This is a solid product and I expect to use these for years to come.

Do your self a favor and audition before you make a decision. I'd never take a pair of Grado's or Seenheiser's around in my backpack, these Sonys do that job just fine. Good buy in my book.

Strength:

Clean, Dynamic sound and deep bass.

Weakness:

Slightly bright.

This is a transparent headphone that can reveal weaknesses in yr audio equipment. Thus, some people might find this headphones terrible. It is not, it simply reveals the weakest link in the system. Other headphones, by comparison, is colored and usually masks the sound by making it sound "acceptable" all the time. This is o.k. for some inexperienced listeners, but the real enthusiasts prefer fidelity of sound. I am one of them after listening to Hi-Fi for over 20 years. All in all, this is a great value for money headphones and beats most mid-tier Sennheisers. But don't buy until you have a fairly good system.

Strong and clear bass.

Weakness:

Very bright.

After reading some other reviews I figured I'd throw mine in as well. I have been using these headphones for about 6 months now and I must say that I am very pleased. I am reading that people don't like the comfort, size, etc. I have to say that these are very comfortable headphones. I wear them on average about 8 hours a day straight. They are my computer headphones but I also use them to listen to my tuner/receiver. I have been reading that people complain that their ears get too hot as well. Well my ears feel almost completely normal after 8 hours of use straight. I don't notice my ears being much warmer (and definitely not hot).

They are very bright headphones. I don't use an EQ with any of the software on my computer and they still sound very balanced for every song I listen to. Deep and pronounced bass... not muddy or muffled at all. A less pronounced (but still clearly identifiable and nice sounding) mid range. Which leaves me with the treble as the only gripe. But it's a very small complaint at that especially considering the price range.

As for listening on my tuner/receiver with an EQ I am extremely pleased with this purchase. I have not heard this "ringing" that other people are talking of.

Very comfortable, sound great, very nice bass that sounds good as well, and defined midrange. Pretty much the opposite as most others are saying. I would tell anybody to give these headphones a fair chance and decide for themselves. As is apparent from these reviews we can't agree on things together. It's going to be all in the 'ear of the beholder' as it were.

Strength:

Very comfortable, great imaging, VERY clean

Weakness:

Many of my MP3's sound like crap because, well, they were in 128k :P

I used my $30 R/10's for a while, and I was content. Then after about 2 years of college boy abuse (more from my friends than anything), they decided to snap one day. So I was on the quest for a new pair of cans...

I shopped around for a while; they didn't carry the model at the Best Buy anymore, but they had the V600's. I decided to keep those in mind, and popped into the local Guitar Center to check out some cans.

I tried out the 500's: horrible! All I heard was distortion. I also tried the 700's: great, but I wanted something more flat. The 600's fit the bill perfectly...incredibly clean sound (I was listening to a CD though a board...no headphone amp unfortunately). I also tried AKG 240M's...I think I just lost respect for all AKG products. "Flat" means if it's on the track, you hear it with no over- or under- emphasis. Well, that also means if there's bass on the track, I want to hear it. I think they claim to go down to 18 Hz or something, but as far I'm concerned it's more like 250 Hz, and they're also WAY too bright.

I was a bit skeptical since I heard the mids may not be great and this and that, etc. When I got em, I decided to see what happens when you hook them up to a portable. Big mistake. Portables have no power. Sure, they can still play at a nice volume, but the sound is horrible. On the other hand, I hooked up the cans to my mini-stereo, which actually has a nice power output level on the headphone jack. WOW!! Everything I've been missing was suddenly there. I was no longer listening to a CD; I was in the studio. You can actually clearly hear the crackle in the singers' voices when they trail off notes. They sound like they're singing into a mic (from the diaphragm!), as opposed to a set-in-stone recording that is rather bland. The imaging is incredible too; lots of times there would be soft voices in the background and I'd take off the cans to see if someone was actually talking to me. I also want to mention these are closed-back, and the isolation is great too (I don't think I'll ever go back to open back again...I'm a drummer so I need the isolation.)

Another thing I like about these is that while they are flat, they don't have to be if you don't want them to. By this I mean that I have my output slightly EQ'ed to my taste, and I'm happier than ever; it handles the additional low and high end perfectly. All of you people saying they sound horrible need to EQ your sound. You want flat sound for mixing and still are getting bad sound? Two words: HEADPHONE AMP!! I can't overemphasize the importance of proper power for these...it's really a difference of night and day, to my ears anyway :) A lot of boards are pretty bad at that (my mini-stereo actually sounds a lot cleaner than the Mackie board I heard these through initially!)

So if you got a nice power source, go out and get these today! :)

Weakness:

a little uncomfortable after long-term wear; ears get a bit hot.

These head headphones sound wonderful for the money. The come with a carrying pouch and are well-built.

The bass response is nice and deep and I do not hear any ringing as reported in other reviews. I would suggest those guys get a good amp! The Sony's only reproducing the garbage that their amps are putting out. The overall quality is excellent, again considering the pricepoint.

No regrets!

Weakness:

None at the price point

Comfortable phones. Good quality. Lack transparency in
the midrange, overemphasized midbass compared to electrostatics. Need a lot of power overhead and a clean
source to show their strengths. Not the best at the price
but very acceptable. Definitely inappropriate for portable use.
