Strength:

you can find them under $200 anywhere since the 600 model came out

This is a no brainer.... now that the price has went down there isn't a better deal out there. Very comfortable, loud, clear & accurate. Avoid the mini phones unless the size is that important to you...why pass on quality? Even the biggest fool into rap music would appreciate this kind of bass.

Strength:

phenomenal sound quality... amazing detail, especially for vocals and multi-layered sounds

Weakness:

The 580's will reveal any weakness in the source material - (ive only just learnt how badly recorded some CD's can be)but then thats hardly the headphones fault, is it?

OK, im not going to beat about the bush, the SENNHEISER 580's are SUPERB. MAGNIFICENT. PHENOMENAL.

Please, ladies and gentlemen, select your superlative, because all will apply to this amazing piece of headware.

The Product : big, very well-designed and surprisingly light. You'll see from earlier reviews, these are seriously comfortable.

The Sound : Audio amateur I may be, but even Vincent Van Gogh would have thought twice if he'd listened to these baby's - the sound is just beyond the comprehension of my tiny mind. I dont know how so many different sounds can sound so perfectly distinct at the same time, but they do.

The 580's will bring to life any recording you may own in a way you could never imagine.

When you try to buy these (trust me,you will), please, try listening to 'Tijuana Lady' by Gomez. When the chorus hits home, its as if the group decided to abandon the stage and sit alongside you, singing to you from either side.
(one of those genuine, spine-tingling moments, just leaving you glad you have ears)

My Advice ? - Take 2 weeks off work, you'll end up ploughing through your whole CD collection, just to appreciate those details you never knew existed.

The Price - ok, and here comes the best news of all, the prices are a-tumblin, youll have seen the original price of $350 dollars falling to around $140, and like me you'd think hmmm...those ARE cheap, but then to announce that Empiredirect.co.uk were offering these for £60 + delivery (about 90 frickin dollars!!!) you would have to be insane in the brain, not to buy these.

Go on, treat yourself, youll never regret it.

2 compliants....My Maggies that I just loved to death don't sound nearly as good now that I've starting using the hd-580's. & secondly they've made me really lazy. All I wanna do when I get home every night is play cd's for hours. They are the most comfortable best sounding phones I've ever heard for that kind of money...You can find em for $179 all over the web & sometimes less on ebay.
I'm at work right now & can hardly focus on anything else...I can't wait to get home & put on the cans...I really need to try to put em away for awhile...my social life is sufferin....

After reading review after review singing praise to the 580, I decided that these headphones were something I needed in my stereo equipment catalog. I couldn’t wait any longer when I read a short list of headphones from ‘stereophile’ magazine stating the 580’s were a class ‘b’ product. Along with the listed for about half the price a class ‘a’ headphone and 1/10 the cost of a class ‘b’ loud speaker; I would not be denied this one inexpensive joy.

Two weeks of agony pasted as I waiting without patient for my ebay seller made good on our arrangement. Finally they arrived. The first thing I noticed was from listening to my sennheiser fusion 500’s that the 580 was relentlessly more accurate. My fusion’s were a great springboard for what my ear were ready to experience. The first few days were spent listening to midrange that had myself in awe. I did notice at extremes; highs they were and bit sharp, grainy and in the lows there was clipping. As far as the clipping, it soon worked its way out after listening on a true receiver versus my mini component system. The more I listened to the 580 the better they got. I found myself for a good while just listening to my 580’s over my B&W’s dm604’s. The 580’s are comfortable and have enormous earpieces that swallow your entire ear. Needless to say the wait was well worth it.

I have recently been able to compare the 580 to another great set of cans. Once and from reading review after review I decided to purchase another couple headphones from Grado, the sr80 and sr325. The 580’s are more comfortable than both. In all fairness it would seem logical to compare the 580 to the sr325. They are closer in price. In my opinion, the 580 is extremely defined and accurate through all frequencies and only when placed in direct contrast with the sr325 does the sr325 seem to nudge them in midrange definition. But I feel the 580 more musical. Jazz and hip hop being the format. Piano, guitars along with vocals appear more vivid with the 580. Make no mistake the sr325 is a fabulous set of headphones. I just prefer my 580s.

One last thing, if you are in the market for a good set of headphones get the 580. Right now they being sold on-line for 100-150 bucks, at this rate you cant afford to let this pass you by.

Strength:

Natural, accurate, full. Comfortable to wear.

Weakness:

Sonically, none. The jacks between the cord and the earpieces keep popping out, or otherwise make a bad connection, but can be corrected.

The 5-star reviews below sum things up. I just wanted to push the average up a bit. Best headphones I've heard by far. At $175, and with a DSP Pro which had an ebay value of $35+, this is a hi-fi steal.

I notice a reviewer below said these had "excellent soundstage." What? You listening to those made-for-headphone recordings?

Weakness:

None for their price

Better bass than Grado 325s, and $100 less. DSP degrades sound quality. No problem with cord (yet) as others have reporterd. Ohooo so comfortable... Grado's are not. For $200, you can't do better.

same channel outage problem as everyone else

Not too much to add, except that when I got the channel outage problem, sennheiser customer service was very helpful, and had the phones back to me within a week. There's clearly some kind of design flaw here - the customer service rep said "oh, yes, we have a fix for that."

Now they're fixed, and they're the greatest - I always wanted them, but couldn't justify 300 bucks. Five stars for value at the cut-out price on ubid, 5 stars for sound. (And I'm not taking any off for the flaw, given the speedy turn-around.)

I received my HD580/DSP Pro combo pack last night and, WOW! I stayed up late last night listening to a variety of CDs and DVDs and, put it this way, the first thing I did after getting into the office today was order a second pair for use here. I've been listening to them all day on my old Yamaha CDC-755 that I now keep in my office after I got my new Denon. Clapton never sounded so good.

For those who say they lack bass, they do not. Like hi-end speakers, they have a near-flat response curve and do not exaggerate any particular part of the audio spectrum. They reproduce what is in the recording, no more, no less.

As for the connector problem, I have not seen any envidence of it yet and have found that the connections on my unit are very tight.

Considering that right now these can be had at prices that are a steal ($197 new with the DSP Pro or $137 refurbished at Spidergear.com) anyone looking for an excellent set of headphones who doesent have $350 to spend should jump on these.
