BOUGHT THE 655 ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND PLEASED WITH SOUND AND REALLY ALL ASPECTS OF UNIT. HOWEVER THE UNIT WHILE FUNCTIONING IN RANDOM MODE, SOMETIMES ENTIRELY SKIPS PLAYING A DISC AND THAT DISC ALSO DISAPPEARS FROM THE DISPLAY AS IF THAT SLOT WERE EMPTY. THAT IS VERY ANNOYING AND I WOULD NOT BUY A YAMAHA AGAIN.
GIVE IT A THREE SINCE IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME

Bought mine 2 years ago to replace an old Nak. I run my CDC655 through a NAD 3120 into a pair of Paradigm Studio 20's. GREAT SOUND!!! Clean and bright. As far as warranty and break downs are concerned...I've owned other YAMAHA products and have NEVER had a problem with warranty work. This is the first Home stereo component I've purchased from Yamaha but like I said...it's been two years and alls well.

First disappointment with a Yamaha product. Poor tracking with scratches and CD blemishes. Sometimes, logic in random mode all wrong. Had to have it repaired twice. A poor product to be avoided.

I have this unit for about two years, and so far I had not have any problemsas far as breaking is concern.
But the sound it produces is so-so. I have the Sony 7000 DVD player
and once I put the cd in there, there is not comparasing with Yamaha.
It is also very noisy when changing CD's.
It is a good entry-level CD player. But if you want to get a good
sound out of not so expensive unit, go with the Sony ES line.

This is a very fine CD changer that impressed me very much.It has some nice features such as the ability to select a tape length and allow the player to decide how to best fit your CD(or selected tracks) on it.The sound is very good and it has served me without any problams for about 9 months now.I think it is very hard to beat in it's $300 dollar price range.

The sound is excellent, especially through a Yamaha RXV490 and Bose AM-5 speakers. However, the changing mechanism is noisy and annoying, and worst of all, the tracing motor has broken twice in 1 1/2 yrs of normal use; brings new meaning to the term "disposable audio". This leaves me, a 4 time YAMAHA CD player owner, really disappointed.....

I picked up this CD changer about 6 months ago to replace an older Sony single disc model that I'd had for years.I auditioned it in the store before buying, and was quite impressed, but the big test, of course, is when you bring it home and test it side-by-side with the old unit.... to put it nicely, it blew the sony away!
In fact, it blows away any other player in this price range... the sound is, as yamaha says, natural. Very musical and accurate.

I'd definately recommend it.
My only gripe being it's noisiness during disc switching and a couple of design flaws. (Not being able to hit the direct disc access buttons when the drawer is open, for one.)

I haunt pawn shops. Found my 655 at one outside Shaw AFB. Bought it primarily so I could change disks while one was playing. Took it home, plugged in in and a strange series of problems began--skipping and jumping--but not related to damaged disks. Also door opened rather clunky. Took it apart and found a disk rattling around underneath the drawer. Put it back together and it still had funny skipping problem. Took it apart again and examined the stainless steel rails the lazer head rides on. Added lubricant to rails. No more problems.
With Yamaha DSP A1 and Yamaha speakers all disks played with pleasing sound. When I switched to a set of used Klipsch Forte's things changed. Many disks seemed harsher, but tweaking treble and bass controls on DSP A1 once again smoothed it all out. Changing procedure is loud. It consistantly plays at least two cuts on same disk before random changes. I think Yamaha did that to cut down on the number of times you get irritated by changing disk noise. Didn't work, of course. It needs either insulation or different mechanism.

I would have to agree with the "natural sound" causing ear ringing after 30 minutes of listening. As far as the lack of a power button on the remote, I have mine plugged into my Yamaha receiver and use its remote to power on/off. Not a problem for me. I don't believe I have ever tried to access any buttons on the player itself while having the "drawer" open. My only real complaints are not being able to switch into random mode without using the remote and while in random mode, I have on several occassions, had three of four songs from the same c.d. play in a row. What's up with that anyhow? Not a bad piece of hardware overall. I'm holding out for a DTS DVD multidisk unit from Yamaha.
