Strength:

Great housing and display, Clear output, crisp sound

Weakness:

MADE IN MAYLAYSIA...ARGH! Can't change cds while other are playing.

The Nakamichi MB10 is a great piece of equipment. It is added to my Nakamichi AV 7 and Nakamichi DVD10 with Wharfedales Modus One.Six as the speaker of choice with the Velodyne CT100 as the sub. All connected by Tributaries Cables. All in all, the Nakamichi MB10 is a great unit. I wonder why most of their units now are NOT made in Japan any more. For the "hefty" price tag of $599, one would expect that the unit should be made in Japan. Another thing that disappointed me was that you can not change another cd while the unit is playing a cd. Why Nakamichi??? The unit is quite slim to my liking. It compliments the rest of my Nakamichi set up. I am going to give it a solid 5 regardless of the 2 things that I pointed out that were to my disliking because of the sound....something that other cd players can not match.

Strength:

Overall Sound Quality. Control panel layout, ease & simplicity of operation.

After purchasing a pair of Nakamichi RE-10 Audio receivers I auditioned the Nakamichi MB-10. I found the vocals & mid-range clarity quite enhanced over the 10 year old Sony CDP30. Scratched CD's that had difficulty playing on the Sony now played flawlessly on the Nakamichi MB-10. I feel this is most likely due to the 24 bit d/a converion in the Nakamichi.
I favor best possible sound over an excess of extra features which I seldom use. The use of the MB-10 " Woke Up " some of my more laid back Mid-Range speakers in the multiple speaker systems that I use.

For my own purposes, I am very well pleased with the Nakamichi MB-10 CD Unit.

Strength:

Great Sound;
Compact Size;
Fast response for fast forward/reverse

Weakness:

Trouble with CDR's;
no random play button on the front panel;
Can't change CD's while the unit is playing

I purchased an MB-10 back in January. It was the best sounding unit I found in the ~$500 price range. I was nervous about the loading mechanism; however, the more
I used the unit the more comfortable it became.

I selected the MB-10 over the similiar Rotel CD players
because I liked the response speed of the Nakamichi. When
I pressed fast forward, the unit moved. I liked the sound of the Nak better than the Rotel.

Once I started using the unit on a regular basis I found that I was having problems playing CDRs. I was having problems with 'data' and 'music' CDR's made on my computer. (note, the difference between a 'data' and 'music' CDR is some preprogrammed bits on the 'music' CDR which is needed to make the serial copy management system, SCMS, work. The material used to make both is identical). I tested my CDR's on several MB-10's and had problems on all of them. My CDR's worked fine in the Nak MB-8; DVD-10s; Rotel RCC-955; Yamaha CD changers; Philips CD Recorder; my sony portable; a sony boom-box; an old Denon CD player... Because I do a lot of sound recording and editing I need my player to work with my computer's CDR's, thus, I have exchanged the Nak for a Rotel RCC-955.

As for the sound, I have a Nak IA-1Z which also has a 24bit D/A converter. I'm hoping I can use the digital out of the Rotel and regain the sound quality I liked in the MB-10 by using the digital in of the Nak IA-1Z.
