Strength:

Warm sound, great with a bright sounding amp like the Marantz PM8200.Played with the Duo.BS2 DAC it sounds stunning.I couldn't wish for morew.

Weakness:

Linked up with the DAC, My Stage 1 will not read 50% of the CD's I try to play.Help someone!

I have had a Stage 1 for some years now and really like it's warm sound. I have read many of the comments on this list about the various problems people have had and really didn't recognise any of them. The only problem I've had is very occasional skipping. However, I wanted more from my player, having got a new Marantz PM8200 amp, which sounds great too.So I decided to get a Micromega Duo.BS2 DAC. I have to tell ya, I put on "Queen Bltch" by David Bowie and the improvement in sound was stunning.Everything was so much more focused, with much more detail.Mick Ronsons guitar comes in like Concord! So far so good.I played a few more CD's (More Bowie,Department S,Soft Boys) and all sound fantastic.I was well pleased with my £200 DAC purchase. Then it all went down hill. I put a Clash CD in and the Stage 1 wouldn't even read it or acknowlege it's exsistance.Another few CD's had the same effect. So I unplugged the DAC and they played fine. They didn't sound anywhere near as well as those that play with the DAC, but they played as normal.I'm in a real quandry about this.I'd say 50% of the discs I try to play wont, but the 50% that do play sound brilliant. When I unplug the DAC, everything plays fine. If anyone has any idea at all what the hell is going on here, I'd be grateful to hear from you. This is leaving me totally confused.

Strength:

fast, in your face sound, deep bass.

I had a stage 4, and upgraded to a stage 3 as one was going cheap. There was a distinct improvement, and the player picked out many sounds from my CDs which i had not heard before. I am surprised that other reviews have been so mixed. I have owned 2 Micromegas, have been very happy with the sound, and have never had any problems. The player performs well with all types of music, gives a clean, fast representation, and is a bargain on the second hand market. It has outperformed other machines i've heard at the same price.

Strength:

NONE!!!! Stay away from this piece of junk

Weakness:

See review summary.

I should of listened to my friend (whom is a fellow audionut and sansuinut) about this cd player as I am very much disappointed with the Stage 3''s it''s build quality, oversaturated and artificial sounding and nauseating upper registers. What a piece of junk! My friend''s sons sound design cd boombox sounds better (I am not exaggerating). If an audiosalesman attempts to sell you the stage 3 shake his hand, thank him for his time and walk out of the store. The French should stick to creating beautiful art, food, and literature. Their cars and audio are a joke.

Strength:

suspremly musical,non fatiging,natural.

Weakness:

company transparency

life began as a stage 1 which evolved to a stage 2 then a drive/dac commbo. so what can i say but i love this combo, the sound is massive, non fatiging, and sweet,it is currently being used with a copland cta 401,B&W CDM1, the sound of this player is so smooth and refined, with an impressive tube, analouge quality to its sound, the midrange has presence, and is natural. the bass goes down to hades, and it times well,i previously owned a marantz cd 63 and this beast eats it up for breakfast (as a stage 1) this piece of kit is staying put,it is nicely styled even though the door tray is not dead straight. this player has NEVER skipped, but ive replaced the belt to open the tray once after 6 years. the door will shoot out a bit fast but once the belt is replaced it is fine. i find to the open door button doesnt always respond ,minor foilbles when its suducing your ears. yes micromega shot themselves, very unfortunatley in the foot with this one which is a shame and they are paying the price.yes they do exist they respond to e-mails and have launched a new reference dvd player. .

Strength:

Musicality, looks

Weakness:

flimsy build

I have absolutely thrashed this CD, and apart from a new laser had no problems. Mated with a pair of Tannoy Saturn 8s, a Plinius 2100 amp with Kimber cabling, it is a lovely setup. Friends rave over the sound, and now, 6 years later I still love it. I am dreading the day it finally dies - what will I replace it with for sensible money?

Strength:

Smoothness, detail, looks, little "Stage 5" LED.

Weakness:

Temperamental, refuses to play lightly scratched CDs.

This review is actually of my Stage 5, which I found reduced to nearly half price as it was end-of-line stock. I was a little perturbed to find so many people on this site complaining of mechanical failings on these players, since (touch wood) mine has been glitch-free so far (I''ve had it two years). Occasionally it goes into a sulk and refuses to eject a CD for an hour or two, but I put that down to it being French :-) Overall, a fine player. I like the sound, and the looks are handsome, although as a friend pointed out "It looks great until it lights up, then it looks gaudy as hell". I have little to compare it to - the only other player I''ve owned was a comparatively lowly Marantz CD52. I also have yet to be convinced that a change in CD player makes a massive difference - I prefer to invest in speakers and amplification.

Strength:

it''s warm bass and sweet high end and it''s looks.( goes well with a densen beat-100)

Weakness:

Slightly sloppy midrange(a set pulsar points from nordost put that right) and the customer support from Micromega, wherever they are!

i had a bit of anxiety when buying this CD player because i had the money to buy an arcam cd72. However i decided that my 250 quid had been spent well when i tried the player out. I was a bit worried about all of the other reviews on this controversial player but then realised that everybody else must be talkking about another cd player because the only problems i can see with it are the fact that Micromega are quite a tricky company to get a hold of and also the cd drawer makes an unsettling clunk when closing other than that i love this player.

Strength:

Noooooooone!

Weakness:

Infinity!

I am the first person to uncover the extremely poor quality of the Micromega products. Now everyone know that this brandname carries nothing but junk! To be a responsible producer of whatever prodcuts, quality is of foremost importance. If customers buy a product and break down after a brief period. What would you say?

Anyway, we all should thank the development of the Internet, that we all audiophiles around the world can share good and bad information worldwide. Good products should survive and thrive. Poor and cheating products should be gone. Micromega, without much improvements all over these years since I wrote the first review, should be gone long long ago. We all know that audiophiles is a kind of very fair group of people who make our decision not on any race, nation or appearance, or skin color (we really fit the World Village citizen criteria). We make our judgement solely on the quality of sound, the build of the machine, the price and the after sales service (this is especially the case for valve amps.). To be really frank, Micromega has none of the above attributes. So I leave you all to think about this. I have to thank again for the web site of 'Audio Review" for voicing out our opinion. Thank you, guys at Audio Review and Customer Review. Keep working hard :)

p.s. This time I will increae the number of speaker, or stars now to minus ten, for as Micromega does not want to exit the Hi-Fi market and still attempts cheat!!!
