The Marantz was the first good digital I owned , now in comparison to say a Balanced Audio Technologies piece, sure it doesn't keep up, but if you have $500 for a CD Player, not $5000, this piece is the best there is. It does take awhile to break in, but, what doesn't

I bought the Marantz CD 67SE based upon reviews and recommendations from just about everyone I talked to. I compared it to many in the sub $1000 range. I have to agree with most of the reviews here. While not a "perfect" player it is exceptional for the money. Its sound is very good and very easy to listen to. Well constructed with simple and usable features. With a good mid to hi end system it will be better than most in the under $1k category. It does require some geting used to at the beginning but once broken in, very enjoyable. In brief an excellent bang for the buck.

The Marantz 67SE CD is an excellent CD player for its price. It is very well built, operates smoothly, and produces rich, detailed sound. I am using it with a Harman Kardon receiver and the NHT SuperOne Xus as my number 2 system. I am very satisfied overall with it, but as you can see it is not being used in a high end system.

I was looking for a cd player about a month ago to place in my bedroom. The rest of my bedroom system include Arcam Alpha7 integrated amp and Tannoy M2 speaker. I compared the CD67SE with the following cd players: Parasound CDP1000 and Pioneer Elite PD59. I found that the CD67SE was the one that provided the most detail and clean sound. It also had a very smooth treble and deep bass(although it was a little soft compared with the Parasound). Actually, CD67SE was the best of the three overall. I don't understand why there were some people said that the CD67SE was bright and edgy, I found that the CD67SE was very smooth and enjoyable. If you plan to spend around $500 for a cd player, take a listen to the CD67SE. Good preformer and excellent for the money.

I believe my own ears rather than those of someone else.... I auditioned this player from a local audio shop and I compared it with a sony player.I couldn't believe the difference. On my system the bass and warmth improved greatly as did the overall fealing of the music. I did not test more expensive equipment because that is COMPLETELY useless. If you want to buy a Mercedes Benz, you should drive that car AND another of the same class/price. Not a Rolls Royce. The Benz is a great car but in comparisson with a Rolls it's nothing....
This is why I am not an Audiophile...(that and I don't have 20000 bucks for a amp).
I completely love this Marantz player and I wouldn't trade it for anything else in this priceclass. I also like how it looks and the display dimmer function is usefull. I use a FineArts V1 intg. amp. (equalizer shut off) with Tannoy M3's ,Cabletalk Improved 2 interconnects and Cabletalk 3.01 speaker cable.

At first the Marantz sounded dull as dishwater but having read that it needed an extended break-in I let it run continuously for a couple of days and there was great improvement in its life and detail. Unfortunately the sound now also became too bright. I listen to classical music, mostly chamber and vocal, and was very unhappy with the situation, to the point of wanting to return the player. Apparently the Marantz was not a good match with my B & K amp and Celestion SL6S speakers, a combination that sounded terrific when I played vinyl on my VPI turntable. However, one of the reviewers on this page likewise complained that the sound was too bright and found that turning down the player's volume reduced the brightness. Apparently the Marantz's digital volume control changes the balance of the sound and this did the trick for me (of course compensating by increasing the volume of the pre-amp). I am now enjoying this player very much especially for the clarity and transparency of it's detail and naturalness of the sound. At the stores I had liked the sound of the Planet and the Acurus better but chose the Marantz because of the price. So I give the Marantz a 3 rating for its sound and 1 additional for the price.

The comments that this player is bright out of the box are absolutely correct. However, with a little time (leave the player on all the time) and careful system matching, the CD-67se is very good. This player will sound best with darker sounding electronics. I'm using it with a NAD 304 and it is a very good combination. Also, it is important to use the right interconnects. After some experimenting, I found that the Cardas Quadlink 5C sounded best. I should think that Tara Labs, Monster Cable and other darker, mellower cables would be a good choice.
I have been out of audio for the last 3 years and owned some pretty expensive equipment. It amazes me just how far digital has come. Performance like this would have cost around $1500.00 four years ago. Now it can be had for $450.00. (That's what I paid.)

Over all I would give this CD player 3 1/2 to 4 stars in absolute terms. The bass is very good, solid, detailed, quick, without bloat. The mid-range is also detailed, almost to the point of being analytical. Again, this would compliment a softer sounding system as opposed to one that is already detailed and analytical. It is the upper mid-range that keeps this player from being better. The upper mid-range has some bite and is some what forward. The highs are good, with more air than I've heard before at this price range. Sound staging is also very good with very good depth (for digital) and excellent width. With the right recordings, this player will envelop you in the sound stage. Images, however, are pushed forward in absolute terms.

With the right system (good tube amp would be best) and the right inerconnects, this CD player provides more than a glimps into high end digital.

Short and sweet. The Marantz 67SE seems to give me everything I need at an acceptable price point. No need to worry about getting into the laws of diminishing returns. A little bright out of the box, but it settles in to give me much pleasure with excellent bass drive, clarity and extension. Purchased on sale for $370 new, it is an enjoyable player with pleasing aesthetics which has given me much pleasure!!! For the price.......

Just bought one this week and I am totally blown away by it. I previously had a Phillips CD692 (bought in 1993) - not in the same league I know, but the Marantz eats it alive. It feels like I'm hearing my CD's again for the first time again. Highly recommended.

I've had a CD63 since soon after it came out. Out of the box, I was not impressed and thought it was very overrated. No bass and no dynamics. What in the world were reviewers' ears?
The design and layout is excellent, so modifications were very worthwhile.
The lack of bass and dynamics can be helped at $0 cost by shorting the protection/decoupling resistors to the analog sections (DAC, opamps, hdam).
Philips puts these resistors in all their CD players. Its good in the digital sections because those chips put noise on the rails, but with analog chips, they starve for power. Other free mods include bypassing the electrolytic coupling caps at the outputs, bypassing the HDAM (its a buffer), and removing the muting circuits. If you do these, you have to turn off your amp or preamp before the cd player or else you will hear a "pffffft".

So, spending $15 for a service manual and making some changes and end up with more improvement than even upgrading with a $1000 interconnect! My pet peeve is that a few internal mods in most anything is so much more effective than overpriced "tweeks".
