Strength:

BUILD QUALITY!!! SOUND QUALITY!!!LOOKS!!! THE ROMOTE I HAVE THE GOLD ONE THE ONE THAT IS PHALIC SHAPE LOOKS AND FEELS VERY RITZY.

Weakness:

NONE THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS.

I Love this cd player and the remote, its the gold colored one [not the black one that some people got , they are the same as the remote for the cd63se player] this players performance is fantastic i compared it to the [arcam 9 ]and I preffered the MARANTZ. its fantastic very smooth midrange and delicate top end very pleaseing to your ear''s and has tight controlled base, the look is very nice like a referance player should look like, seperate from the rest of the line. I DONT KNOW WHY SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT THE MARANTZ CD17MK2 IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE CD17 AS THERE REALY IS NOT TO MUCH DIFFERANCE BETWEEN THEM. I MEAN THEY HAVE THE SAME TRANSPORT, THE SAME HDAM''S THE SAME DAC''S, THE SAME STURDY CASEING AND BUILD QUALITY, REALLY THE ONLY DIFFERANCE IS ONE HAS A EXTRA DIGITAL OUT BEING OPTICAL AND CD TEXT CAPABILLITYS. THE REAL DIFFERANCE IS BETWEEN THE CD17KI AND THE CD17 AND THE CD17MK2. IM WILLING TO BET IF YOU SAT DOWN AND DID A A-B LISTENING TEST WITH THE CD17 AND THE CD17MK2 YOU WOULD BE LEFT GUESSING AT WHICH CD PLAYER WAS PLAYING. this is a player you can listen to for hours without any ear fatige, i would sugest useing a class a amp for best performance. my set up includes the following -MARANTZ CD17 -MARANTZ PM17 INTEGRATED AMP -PSB STRATUS GOLD''I SPEAKERS -XLO INTERCONECTS/SPEAKER WIRE

Strength:

BUILD QUALITY! SOUND VERY SWEET! LOOKS! REMOTE THE NEW GOLD ONE

Weakness:

NONE THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS.

This CD Player is tops all the way, just start with the solid build quality, it is built to last, all metal construction. Not to mention looks it is a very nice looking cd player. And the sound is just outstanding very smooth midrange, and feathered top end. there is deffinatly no ear pain here , what im trying to say is you get no ringing in the ears after listening for a while, just pleasing sound that you can listen to for hours on end , it is very dynamic and yet also soft , it has a very nice low end . this i belive is MARANTZ''S BEST PERFORMER IN CD PLAYER''S, SO MANY PEOPLE RAVE ABOUT THE CD 17 MK2 AND THEY REALLY DONT KNOW THAT, MARANTZ DID NOT MAKE AS MANY CHANGES AS PEOPLE THINK ! SO WHEN THEY SAY THE CD 17MK2 IS WAY BETTER THAN THE CD 17 I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW IF THEY ACTUALLY SAT DOWN AND LISTENED TO THE TWO OF THEM, DOING A a and b COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO, I THINK YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO PICK ONE OVER THE OTHER. OH WELL I ENJOY MY MARANTZ CD17 VERY MUCH IT IS A OUSTANDING PRODUCT FROM A GREAT AND LEGENDARY COMPANY.

Check this out, this could be one of the biggest bargains of the decade. This player is so revealing which I never before expected from CD player at this price around. I can hear timbers that I'd never before heard from my 3,000$ worth seperate bull shit box( not to mention 300$ digital cable). If I would have known that I could get this much from cd player this price, I would not have wasted this much money on digital gears ever. I'd rather spending it on my new tonearm than seperate bull shit digital source. This cd player is so excellent, it reveals impressive details, clear ambience, I can spot the exact space between instruments, and, moreover, AIR and AIR is what you'll get from this player which I never thought that I could get this much air from 1200$ cd player. If one would ask me " isn't there anything bad for this player I would say " yes, there is" it's not mine. I am too stupid too rely on cheaper digital gear while my friend spent a bit less than half the price I paid for my bull shit 3,000$ seperate digital source and get as much as I do from the bloodsucker equipments. I am telling you if you are to spent thousands of dollar on digital gears that's OK it's your money you might get something worth your money, not stupid like me. But if you are looking for something really, really worth every dime you spent I strongly recommend this Marantz cd 17, it performs like several thousand dollar worth machine and save the difference for a good analog source if you want to.

CD-17 is one of the best CD Players out there. It takes the open and well defined midrange from CD63SE and adds bass and subtracts grain from the top end. I think its dynamic drive capability is excellent. Steve's comment about the lack of dynamics could be caused by some other component in his system. Harmonic presentation, and truth of timber is what matters when you test a CD Player. Very few CD Players can actually reproduce a sweet violin sound with its resonance and sweetness(if it is a decent violin in the recording). I think CD-17 does an excellent job in accomplishing this task with no major shortcomings in the extreme frequencies. This quite heavy CD Player deserves a perfect 5 star rating not only in its price range but among a lot more expensive CD Players.System: DNA-1,C-J PV10A, ProAc Tablette 50 Sig,Kimber Cable

The Marantz CD 17 is the best choice for a quality Cd player. I heard it together with Marantz PM 17, hooked on B&W CDM 1 SE and there can't be said anythig bad about this combination. Great for Classical music, as well as other types.

After finding my Arcam Alpha 7 CD sounding a bit thin and flat, I went in search of a better alternative. I found the Marantz CD17. It sounds big and rich and full, yet with no lack of sparkle or detail in the highs. It just sounds analog instead of digital, which is just what I want.
Used with Arcam Alpha 7R amp, Monitor Audio Silver 4I speakers, and Nordost Blue Heaven interconnects with Kimber 4TC speaker cable.

CD-17 is OK but overall is very bland sounding. After extended listening everything sounds the same. Try the CD-17KI or even better, if you can find one, the classic Marantz CD-23. This is still very competitive and sounds more analog than many turntables!CD-17 * CD-17KI *** CD-23 ****
