Strength:

build quality; clinical sound reproduction; fantasitc HDCD decoder;

I bought this unit second hand to go with my Krell pre/power combo for S$4,000. What a bargain! Clinical, transparent and immense information retreival are the strengths of this machine, especially with HDCD recordings. That's not to say this machine can't sound warm. I too tried Cafe Blue as recommended by Dagenham Dave. Fabulous.

A friend brought round his Sony SACD (the DVD model) for a test and this machine blew it away. Night and day difference. We tested material using HDCD, SACD and CD discs. Results were:

1 Krell HDCD
2 Krell CD
3 Sony SACD
4 Sony CD

Oh, I almost forgot. This machine is built like the proverbial s*** house. Get one whilst you can.

The KAV 300CD is a top-notch unit. The bass is superb, and the music totally envelopes you. The build quality is unsurpassed. Having the option of using balanced outputs is an added plus

Strength:

clear window on music, natural sound, design and build are excellent

Weakness:

cheap rca's,a little pricey new bt a good buy used

First let me say I find the 300cd to be a very fine cd player capable of delivering every bit of musical info on the disc.I hear things way back in the soundfield that were previously obscured with other players I've owned and all without the usual digital artifacts associated with the medium. To address some of the other claims that this player is bright or harsh I find it quite the opposite.Natural, airy and yes detailed but not strident.I personally think that the answer to so many varying opinions of this unit is that it provides a clear window on the performance of the rest of the equipment in the playback chain.I find it very usefull in detecting subtle differences in amps, cables, speakers ect.So for the detractors out there you may have missed a golden opportunity to discover the real weakness in your system.Don't blame the Krell.

Strength:

Class A preamp section, Build is great

Weakness:

color: pale dogdung and medium dogdung

Right from the start I was struck by the powerful, light-filled sound of the Krell, thinking that it reminded me of an amalgam of two amps I’ve reviewed previously: the Mesa Baron. Like the Baron, the krell pumps out the music, having no trouble with dynamic challenges. And like the Joule Electra amp, there is a very appealing uncongested quality to the krell's performance that makes individual sounds seem very singular and whole. The 300cd is not a traditionally ss player -- its sound is far too nimble and resolving for that. Instead, it does its job with airiness, openness and light, among other thingsResolving, light-filled sound; enormous soundstage -- deep and wide; seemingly pushes out the music; has deep bass that lacks some weight in absolute terms; does not possess the fullness and body of some others, but counters with "vividness."

Strength:

Build; tranparency; balanced out; HDCD

Weakness:

none at this price

At this price, this is fantastic bargain. I too have compared it with an SACD (Sony 9000) using dual layer CDs and truly this unit won hands down on any comparison.
