Strength:

Looks good, sounds good.

Weakness:

As mentioned above.

I purchased this along with a H/K AVR-120 H/T receiver to make up a music setup. Overall, I like the sound and features of the CD player, and I like the HDCD support. Unfortunately it has a few flaws. My biggest gripe is that it sometimes does not recognize CDs. I thought perhaps it was CD-Rs, but I realize that it is with every kind of CD. Sometimes it performs flawlessly, and sometimes it will endlessly rotate the carousel looking for a CD when in fact they're all full. As well, for some stupid reason it rotates through all the CDs before playing the one selected. Otherwise, sound is good, and the digital out is excellent for thos who don't have a better DAC on their receiver.

Strength:

>HDCD the sound is really, really incredible. >Very well made. >Aestectically pleasing.

Weakness:

>Very low output volume, you really have to turn up your record levels. >No way to program on the player itself, you must use the remote to program. >Carousel spins all the way around through every disc number everytime you put a disc in. >Time function is on the remote and not on the unit. >Doesn't always read the discs, sometimes you have to take the disc out and reinsert it in order to be read. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time until the disc sensing diode that went bad on all of the FL 8550's will go bad on this one too. >You can't exchange discs if a program was set up, it erases the program as soon as you open the drawer. >When in standby mode the light (amber) gives off a hum. >The disc exchange button is in a very hard place to reach when the drawer is open.

A very interesting piece of audio equipment. I like some things about it and I hate some things about it. (See strengths and weaknesses)
