Strength:

Good sound, durability and nice looks

Weakness:

Have not found any in the last 8 years

As mentioned, I have owned this CDP for the last 8 years and except for the drawer getting jammed during operation, ONCE,there has been no other problems to think of. The sound is good overall and if you play a well recorded CD on it, the player delivers. I know this because a friend of mine, who is also 'one of us' and sells gear for a living, came over and did some tests of how well the player produces details that some of the high end players are famous for. He was impressed and in his judgement my next upgrade should be of other components instead of a CDP. Realize this was a few years ago and I am sure the player cannot compete with some of the newer makes and models, but till today, it holds its own on a well recorded source.

Strength:

excellent entry level cd carousel player

Weakness:

noisy tray; illuminated information display panel quit, consequently the entire unit stopped working!

just as I noted above, the display panel, over the coarse of a few weeks, became dimmer and dimmer, until finally, one evening, I went to turn it on, and it wouldn't. No display, no sound, no power, nothing. Hearing how Denon treats its clients, I am very skeptical in sending it or bringing it in. It has been sitting on a shelf for over a year!!! Yup, I've had to resort to a Sony Discman for that long, thinking that one day I might have the gutts to bring it in in Sacramento.

If anyone has any ideas about this problem, PLEASE email me or submit another review referring to this. I will be indebted to you.

Strength:

Plays anything

Weakness:

Convenience of operation

This thing gets around scratched CDs like nobody's business. The Alpha processors sound good I guess, but I prefer to use the coax digital out to my receiver's DACs instead. If they cost extra, I probably wasted money.

A few things bug me about this unit:

- Remote control has no on/off. Not so bad if your receiver has a switched outlet, except that it starts playing when it comes on. So I'm always pressing "STOP" after I turn the system on.

- Favorite Track File feature is great, BUT you can't add a track to the file while the disc is playing, or even in the mechanism. Also, FT is ignored by default, AND you can't activate FT mode while a disk is playing. So if you hear a song you hate and want to add it to your list, it's a multi-step process that involves stopping the disc. Come on, guys... This should be a trashcan button on the remote.

- Display is inset and small. I have to crouch down to read it, because an overhang blocks my view from above.

I replaced my old player with the DCM-460 and the sound is great. My power-amp and speakers are very clean sounding and detailed. My old player had that cold digital type sound, this is not the case with the DCM-460. The sound is warm and smooth. If you are using clean or bright sounding equipment this player may be for you, if your equipment is overly warm sounding maybe give it a listen first.I am totally pleased with this player, for the price it's great.

I original upgraded from my single disk denon player to the 460 because it had a digital ouput and I wanted the ability to upgrade to a stand alone D/A. The 460's "alpha processing" D/A was so much better than my 615's, that I still have not been able to justify an additional D/A. An even better value is the new Denon model 360. It has a comparable D/A and only cost $319! I helped a friend of mine on a tight budget build a system with the 360, NHT2.5i's, NAD 114/216 amp pre amp combo, and tera labs cables and interconnects, and it sounds FABULOUS!, amazing from a CD player costing under 400!

DCM-460 coupled with Parasound P/SP 1500, P/DD 1500, HCA 1000, HCA 2003, 2 Paradgim Ref/80s, CC-450, 2 ADP-450s, Servo-15. The DMC-460 is clean, sweet and smooth. Transport takes a while but the quality of sound is worth the wait.

Bought the DCM-460 as part of my first stereo system (together with a Denon AVR2700 receiver, Energy ES10 subwoofer, and Polk Audio RT800 fronts). The CD player sounds far richer than every other CD player I've listened to, producing smooth midrange and bass. The CD player sounds good when hooked up the receiver via analog connections, but really shines when hooked up digitally, producing very clear and sharp notes. After you've listened to digital mode, going back to analog sounds muddy.
Only complaint, and a minor one, is the slow CD switching. I really like the fact that you can change the other CDs while one is playing - very cool and not something that a lot of CD players that I've demoed have.

Got it from the good guys! for $429.

The Denon DCM-460 is a great CD player. It features dual 20bit D/A converters with Denon's Alpha processing. The CD player has three sets of outputs Fixed, Variable, and a Coax digital output. The nice D/A converters help push the sound quality of this player above that of the standard sony/pioneer players. I would advise that anyone who is looking for a CD player in the 350-500 range give the Denon a listen, you will be surprised.

I purchased this unit used after the original owner upgraded to a DVD player. The unit was only a month old and in great condition. I also scored an EXTREMELY good deal on it.
The sound quality is superb and I find that I'm noticing new things on CDs that I've had for years. The recording quality of CDs is more pronounced too, though that isn't always a good thing.

The only thing I dislike with this deck is the tray. It's loud, clunky, and slow. I was afraid the loud and clunkiness of the tray was only on my deck, but from what the other reviewers said I guess that's not the case. As for speed, my old shelf system cartridge + one system was even slower. I can deal with that. I would have also liked for digital outs and better specifications for the Coaxial digital out that the unit does have. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of plug it needs.

For the money I spent, I couldn't get a better player. It's strong sound-wise and an all-round kick ass player. It was an excellent addition to my fledgeling component system.

Due to my well publicized nightmare with Shop4.com waiting for a Harman Kardon FL 8450 to be delivered, I got frustrated and purchased a Denon 460 cd changer instead. I really don't have a lot of comparison listening to rate the Denon against, I went on the quality of reviews on this site and it fit my budget, $330 mail order from www.unclestereo.com ( they are not a Denon authorized dealer, Player was meant for Canadian sale, hey, what the hell do I care) Player sounds fantastic. Build quality is excellent, operation of drawer is smooth and quiet, disk to disk changes are a little slow, track to track changes are very fast. Player has all features one would need. I am very happy with it. It is my preference to purchase American products unless no comparable American competitor can be found, I don't know How the HK sounds, but if it was better than the 460, I can't imagine HK discontinuing it for the 8300 which has serious reliability problems.
