Strength:

Excellent build and sound quality. Can be found used for a good price. Not a mass market piece that will get thrown in the junk pile a few years down the road.

Weakness:

None.

I actually just got this player today and have been listening non-stop. The sound is surprisingly close to my vinyl setup (which spanked my last CD player). Warm, yet detailed and vibrant sounding. Also, there were subtle flaws in some recording that were heard on LP I always assumed it was an imperfection on the LP. However, when I got this player the flaws were now noticeable on the CD as well! Of course everybody has a different idea of the perfect sound, but if your a vinyl person you won't be disappointed with this player.

Strength:

warmth, sound stage, analog sounding

Weakness:

might be on the dark side for some people.

Best for price player. warm and musical. never had a problem with it. might get a similar sound though from a philips dac7 although cal is a lot richer. highs seem a bit rolled off

Strength:

Warm, laid back, accurate

Weakness:

unforgiving to poor recordings

Bought this unit new in 98'' and have never had a problem. For the $300 I paid for it nothing comes close. Of course, that was 98".

Strength:

Lush, warm sound, with detailed and wide soundstage, articulate bass.

Weakness:

A little laid back in its presentation

This single player is an excellent value. After approximately 5 years of daily use I have never encountered any problems with either its performance or the easy listening it provides. Completely reliable. Best for classical, jazz, vocals or acoustic-centered music. Those who like a forward-sounding player may want to look elsewhere. Highly recommended !

The DX-1 is a good unit. I bought it and was pleased with one complaint. Theremote control worked for shit. I am not lazy, so I dealt with getting up and using
the face of the unit. Finally I shipped it to CAL through the dealer. The remote
still worked terribly. I do not know how someone could send it back and think it
was fixed. Anyway, they offered me the DX-2 for $50 which I accepted. I do
not know there were any differences, but my remote has been fine. Recently
the player has been skipping. I have no idea why, but if friends are over I blame
it on the cd's so they will not think my player sucks. I hope this doesn't continue.

Other than that- all is good. Also, there is nothing that sounds as good for that $

Strength:

Throws a nice sound stage, good detail, detail sounds much better now using vibrapods.

Weakness:

Upper midrange detail seems filtered out. Occasionally misreads disks, just open and close again and fine.

It's a nice player. Have 800 series monstercable interconnects and speakerwire. Krell 300i amp and
b&w 805 matrix speakers on sound anchors. Occasionally
the player sounds harsh. Just in listening to the krell
300cd did i notice that There was information missing in
the cal dx-1. It just wasn't there. Has good bass extersion
nice sound stagging, the human voice can come across a
little cold at times. Depends on the cd. It is more for
rock and jazz, classical doesn't seem as pleasing on this
player.

Orginally had a cheap sony player. Have listened to the
krell 250cd and 300cd

The DX-1 sounds like most other budget cd players: It has a harddigital edge to the sound. I could only listen to one cd at a sitting or
my ears would hurt. I recently purchased an used Musical Concepts Enigma cd player for $400. No comparison, the Enigma is a much more musical player.
New, the Musical Concepts is only slightly more expensive and a much better
player. Not to mention the remote also works a lot better (than CAL's).

I've owned this CD player for two and a half years now. It is the only part of my system I don't have any urge to change or upgrade. It sounds fabulous and definitely beats out other CD players in it's price range hands down. I can't tell much of a difference between the DX-1 and the DX-2. My DX-1 has performed flawlessly the entire time I had it, and can play CD's that skip on other CD players. I love this thing-Highly recommended!!

Re: Problems with the DX1 remote. I had the same difficulties for several months. It turned out that, if the player is not plugged into a grounded outlet (or you are not using a grounded power cord - which turned out to bemy specific problem), then the remote functions erratically. When I returned
to using a grounded power cord, it worked perfectly. I've had the unit now
for three years, and experienced no other problems.

Till now i've owned 3 cd's, Sony cdp 2000 es, Marantz cd 63 se, and CAL DX-1.DX-1 is my last one, and i love it.
In Portugal, my country, the CAL products aren't knowed very well, but the first time i heart it, i became in love.
Of course there are better things, but that lasts for me
