DH Labs Silver Sonic T-14 Speaker Cables

DH Labs Silver Sonic T-14 Speaker Cables

DESCRIPTION

Silver Sonic T-14 High Resolution speaker cable was designed by D.H. Labs to provide the highest quality sound at a much lower price than competing cables. It uses the finest materials available, including silver, oxygen-free copper and a pure Teflon dielectric. The strands are then tightly wound and extruded with our Teflon insulation. Silver Sonic T-14 uses DuPont PTFE, which is the highest grade of Teflon (and the most expensive).

Strength:

bass control is excellent. neutral presentation.

Weakness:

not sure i have found them, perhaps the price ratio is blinding

this speaker cable mated with the dhlab interconnect cable has a beautiful synergy. I can't say that i have heard all or will hear the best, but I can say that I have found my speaker and phono cable that will stay put. the bass control and presentation is unbelievable compared to the monster phono cable and rega wire that i had before.

my speaker wire is terminated with banana plugs.

Strength:

Open, extended and detailed top end
Tight, fast and clean and transparent sound

Weakness:

Bass could sound fuller (double run is recommended)

These speaker cables have a frequency range wider than other competitors in their price range (and over their price range); treble is extended and very detailed; bass is very tight and deep but may lack fullness when matched with interconnects wich are weak in the bass area; the best match for these are surely the dh labs bl1 series II (wich are amoung the best budget interconnects); i don't recommend these speaker cables in short lenghts (

Strength:

Sounds great to me...

Weakness:

None that I can detect...

I have read so many passionate discussions about cables in this and various other web discussion groups and bulletin boards. Things were a lot simpler twenty years ago, when maybe you could get a discussion going with a somewhat obsessive-compulsive person about 16- vs. 12-guage wire. Frankly, I have not been able to hear the kinds of differences that warrant the hundreds (let alone thousands) of dollar- price disparities between cables.
That being said, this D.H. Labs Silver Sonic T-14 appears to be very well made. I bought a single 8-foot pair from the good folks at ACI, expertly terminated with large spades on the amplifier end (connected to an old but excellent NAD 3300 60-watt/channel integrated) and wery nice bananas on the speaker end (connected to new Vandersteen 1c's). I have not used another cable with this configuration.
Overall, about two-thirds of the comments about this cable favor shotgunnig and/or biwiring where applicable, mostly for the goal of attaining fuller bass. Well, biwiring is not an option with my Vandersteens and they are not known for deep bass, but what they put out, given my configuration and placement, is clear and uncolored with good weight with most recordings. Mr. Vandersteen himself says that if you want to get deep into the 30's (Hz.) and below. you must supplement the 1c's with a good subwoofer. I'll get a subwoofer before I invest in another run of cable.

Strength:

Smooth airy treble, Lush, liquid and smooth vocal presentation. Internal wire construction with teflon dielectric. Forgiving of badly recorded CDs.

Weakness:

Had to biwire to get bass right. For not biwirable speakers, you have to double run, just like a lot of reviewers here found out.

When I first hooked it in, it sounds muffled and dry. I disconnected it then connected it to my receiver for burn in. After three days I connected it back to my Bryston. What a cable!! The highs were smooth and airy. Female vocals are lush and haunting. Male vocals are warm. Not the last say in bass though but it is satisfyingly well mannered and controlled enough.

I ordered it from Jeff Dellman of Value-Audio.com. A great guy and superb customer service. He responds to emails promptly and gives valuable advice. He did a great job in terminating the cables. Great quality bi-wire construction work. If you are interested in this cable get it from him. Nice price too.

This cable is beautiful, and CAN'T be beaten for the price, and probably can't be beaten for twice the price. It is an exceptional value. Beautifully liquid, revealing and detailed without sounding bright or analytical, very musical, spectrally balanced very well.
The designer acheives these goals by taking OFC copper stranding as a base, then heavily plating it with silver before it it tightly wounld. Then, the best quality teflon is used as an insulator, and vibration damping material is used next to the wires inside of the jacket. This has a very sought after "silver sound" for much much less than pure silver cable would cost.

Comparison speaker cable: Kimber 10 ft. 8TC double run

Replacing the Kimber with the D-H Labs T-14 12' pair (no break in except that of the factory) revealed the following: 'drier', less full bass (welcome depending on the source material...there was less tendency for the bass to boom). Less lush and dimensional presentation on the whole (a side effect of the above) The highs are more clearly presented which is a welcome thing on this laid back system. My girlfriend said, "sounds like somebody washed a window" meaning: cleaner sounding. This is without any preconceived notions on her part about silver cables, and without any prompting. I thought she was right.

The DH Labs seems to be a very good match with these components. It also cost about a 1/4 of the Kimber (4-TC might be a better comparison price-wise).

What's good and what's bad

Bad: I waited so long to change the Monster Cable PowerLine2 that I used before.

Good: Better lows, highs, and detail.

I wish I could give two fives one for the regular and one for the biwire. If you think biwireing makes no difference your wrong, try it. It made me convert.

I just hooked up my old Infinity RS3a (they have been considerably hot rodded over the years) with shotgunned (doubled) T-14. This gives about 11 awg which is needed in this case because with 300 watts at 6 ohms there is about a 25 amp peak power. The T-14s are very clean and the bass is tight and fast. The biggest thing is how much faster and tigher everything sounds. These cables are still in the process of breaking in and as they do the sound improves. The only place I've seen these cables is at the Audio Alternative in Atlanta which has been worth the drive. I've heard better cables, but not for less than three times the money.

I purchased the T-14 about a month ago (12 ft biwired) and have been consistently impressed with the increased soundstage and clarity at all levels. These cables present the music with incredible realism and are very true to the natural sound of your system. They broke in very quickly, and already, they make my system sound (which cost less than $2500) as good as anything I have heard, even up to some of the $10,000 price range.

After purchasing my new ACI Opal's {see review} I wanted to try a new set of cables. I had ACI make up a pair of 12ft SHOTGUN pair of T14. My faithful Audioquest Indigo was put to the test. The T14 was broke in for about 48 hours using an old reciever . The Opals in my opinion are the best value of any speaker under $1500.00 but the combination with the T14 will stunn you. I am not easily impressed but the difference between the T14 and the Indigo with these speakers was night and day. The cables actually made the Opals produce more bass. Along with a tighter more accurate bass. The mids and highs are much more focused and most experts say you need atleast 60 hours for break in. I cant wait to hear how they will get better. Caution: BREAK THEM IN. Out of the box will give you a false impression. Im ordering all DH Labs interconnects as soon as the wallet will allow. The t-14 is also cheaper than the Indido. Its an outright steal for the money.
