Rega Planar 2 TurnTables

Rega Planar 2 TurnTables

DESCRIPTION

The plinth design is of a low mass particulate core sandwiched by highly rigid phenolic laminates. The P2 uses a derivative of the new ultra low vibration state of the art adhesive mounted motor assembly borrowed from the P3. The Platter is CNC machined HDF which is then metallized, giving a platter with good mass and accuracy.

Finally the P2 carries the legendary Rega RB250 tonearm in its latest guise. (The choice of many other turntable manufacturers).

Bought my Planar 2 in 1982 and it is still working well. I've replaced the belt only once. The old Planars had a wood surround that reminds me of what has been done with the new Planar 25. For some reason Rega deleted the wood surround on the newer models. In 1987I upgraded from the old Rega S tone arm to a demo RB300 Tone arm. About two months ago, I upgraded to the Rega Elys Cartridge.

I don't think I own anything that is this old and still working right. In 1993, I finally gave in, obtained a CD player, and used the turntable less but I've still put many miles on the Planar with no problems at all. When I bought the Elys two months ago I also purchased the fantastic Rega Planet CD player. My comparisons will be between the Planet and the Planar.

The Planar 2 produces good sound. There is a defiance between the Planet and Planar however I will not say that one sounds better than the other, just different. The Planar produces a more laid back sound but still provides good pacing and punch. The Planar 2 seems to really show up poor recordings making them sound awful. I wish there was a better way to mount the arm to the table. The hex nut can come loose and works against Rega's theory on how to couple everything tightly.

Overall, this is an incredible product and at this price, the Planar 2 can't be beat. With a good recording the sound is every bit as good as a CD.
