Strength:

I don't know

Weakness:

noble materials would be welcome.

Let's do short. I hated this turntable, and brought it back after three days at home.

Before I say more about it, I must say I suspect a bad cartridge matching (Goldring 1042, recommended by my dealer) to be responsible for what I heard. But the cartridge does not explain everything.

First of all, this turntable is grossly overpriced regarding the material used for its construction. The plinth is a piece of wood covered with a plastic sheet imitating marble! The platter is really simple, and must not be very expensive to manufacture. The Space Deck sould cost 1.000 $ less.

The sound, at home, was horribly CD-like. That's where I suspect the cartridge. But I also had a lot of wow, flutter and distortion on forte with most records. This turntable made me think CD were better than vinyl. Then I heard a simple Rega Planar 2 that gave me the creeps!

I know better than to shoot some gear in flames after a bad listening experience. But after talking with some guys in the business, I stick to the fact that this TT is horribly overpriced. As for its sound, be sure to listen to other turntables, even much less expensive, before taking any decision. Maybe this TT can do great things, but it didn't at home, even installed by the dealer who found it was OK.

Strength:

Weighty n deep bass, detailed, extended highs, very silent background

Weakness:

lack dust cover

I have been using this TT for 2.5 yrs and liked it so much for its absolute analogue portrayal of every piece of music thrown at it, be it classical, jazz or pop rock. It made my Copland CD288 (n friend's Sony CDPXA-7ES) CD player sound like some cheap $400 CD players. I'd just sold it a week ago and in its place is now the new 2000 version of Spacedeck and SpaceArm - better cosmetics and engineering, especially in the tonearm, which is a uni-pivot design now.

This new Space Arm is really a big leap ahead of the older Space Arm in terms of musicality, bass weight n depth and dynamics. Sometimes, my playing is alternated with the Rega RB600 tonearm, which gives a high standard of performance too. But the new Space Arm is really a better arm than the Rega. Cartridges used are Accuphase AC-2, Audio Technica AT33ML, Ortofon MC-10 Supreme, Denon DL-304 and my current favorite, Dynavector 17D2 MKII. All are low output moving coils.

The new SpaceDeck/Arm looks and sounds even better now with better quality of engineering than before, and is worthy of better cartridges than the Goldring 1042. Used with any of the above-named MCs or better, you won't regret it.

Strength:

Very, very dynamic and involving.

Weakness:

Misses a half octav in the bass and the treble.

This is a very special turntable. I have used it with a Transfiguration Spirit cartridge and a NAS Mentor arm. Compared with every other turntables that I have used it is very dynamic and involving. I fact I liked it more than the NAS Mentor turntable. But maybe you have to get used to the sound, because it loose some bass-extension and also some extension in treble and sounds different from every other turntable that I have used. The backround is blacker than everything ells I have tried. If you want more "high-end" sound it is just to get another recordmat ( Ringmat ) and change the cable with a more high-end cable and then you get get both bass and treble extension, but you loose some involment. Compared to the Forsell the sound is not as smooth, delicate and controlled, but still it is much more dynamic and involving. The VPI Aerius sounds very slow, but much more "hi-fi" compared to the NAS. The finish can not compare with the VPI, and specially not with the Forsell.

Strength:

Beautifully crafted, superb dynamics and sheer musicality

Weakness:

Would like to see other finishes made available, but this one is fine!

After a brief and disappointing experience with the Clearaudio Champ 1, I set about the business of purchasing a new table.

Enter the Spacedeck!

Pitch is excellent. Detail retrieval outstanding and talk about smooth...........That is as long as the recording and condition of the vinyl are up to the task. It does not flatter poor recordings, nor does it go to hell with them. It's is actually one of the few components that I have owned that leaves me slightly perplexed in describing it. The comments prior to my post about the black backround are completely accurate, however. And because of it, the sense that things are more dynamic is obvious. You cannot discount the importance of eliminating vibration. So much is lost when your rig is prone to it.
I am now buying far more vinyl than CD's, however, I still enjoy my digital rig very much. It's just that the Nottingham has this feel or pace that CD offers as well, just differently. It all depends upon the mood. I liken it to wanting a beautiful cut of aged beef to King Crab. Both are excellent, but sometimes one hits the spot more than the other. Regardless of your appetites, the Nottingham Spacedeck is sure to whet yours no matter what the occasion!

Workmanship, Value

Comments are based on the Spacedeck only as I am using the Incognito re-wired RB600 from my Rega P25 as well as the same phono cartridge.
First let me say that the P25 is a great value for it's cost. It may be the best in it's price range. I liken audiophiles to explorers. We climb to the top of the mountain and enjoy the view for a while and then wonder what the view from the next mountain looks like. I purchased the Spacedeck not really sure if the gains, if any, would be realized in my system in my listening room.
My first impression was that the Nottingham is more lush than the Rega. As I settled-in and listened to various LPs I quickly realized that the Nottingham's bass is more powerful and yet more detailed than the Rega but that is not the main story here. The overall character has more to do with how connected the lower octaves are to the mids and the mids to the higher ranges in music. As good as the Rega is, compared to the Nottingham, the P25 gives the impression that the mid and upper bass is slightly disassociated from the lower midrange and up. I had not noticed this characteristic of the Rega until the Nottingham was put into the system.
Overall, the soundstage is a bit more convincing and the image and focus of both musical instruments and voice are more refined. My guess that this is a function of the much heavier and more massive platter.
Build quality is superb. I suspect this thing will outlive me. The Rega will give you an introduction to what the best tables will do. The Spacedeck solidly enters the arena. It plays music.
I'll reserve the fifth star for the next mountain on the horizon.

Happy Listening

Strength:

Solid soundstage, dynamic presentation like no other I've heard, so quiet and gentle and yet masculine and authotitative.

Weakness:

Ugly (?), lack automation of any kind, lacks dustcover

From the first notes that came from the Spacedeck, that reached my ear, I knew what sound should sound like. This somewhat bizzare apparatus is primarily built to revive if not reincarnate the living presence of the music makers. I cannot talk about this source in technical terms, rather I can describe the feelings when listening to the Spacedeck.

Well, it is truly natural singer. It gets me immersed in the music that after a short while I forgets it is there. It is that neutral. Combined with the Space arm and the second from bottom Tracer-2 MM cartridge, the set forms the centre of my listening shrine.

There are better players. They are the elder brothers of the Spacedeck, such as Mentor. The whole family sounds alike, but when you climb up the quality (and price) level, the players sounds more confident, and more detailed and interesting. Nevertheless, although the Spacedeck is the second from bottom (the entry level is the Interspace) has loads of abilities to offer. Worth its price and much more !

Weakness:

This turntable is something special. I brought it out from the UK since it is not available in Australia and I have not regretted the purchase.

Music is given so much "air" that you feel that you are right in front of the performance. My LPs have never sounded so good when using the Nottingham Analogue Space Deck.

It will play every genre of music you can throw at it with great panache. My music collection ranges from 1990s dance club 12 inch singles to LPs by Oasis to Metallica, some jazz and classical.

This turntable is so involving that you will forget that you are listening to reproduced music. It justs sounds right.

I have replaced the original Tracer II MM cartridge with a Denon DL304MC which is a really smooth sounding cartridge and a bargain to boot $450AUD.

If you are after a mid price turntable whose performance is well within reached of the very best and built to last a lifetime then give the Notts Analogue a spin.

Strength:

Sound so "real" that it tempts you to blow torch your cd's

Weakness:

Pardon?

The "relevant" part of my system consists of the Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck coupled with Interspace arm and Tracer 1 cartridge, Musical Fidelity E20 Pre-Amp feeding two E30 Power-Amps which bi-amp and bi-wire Mission 754 Freedom speakers.
The Spacedeck is, to date, the most expensive individual acquistion that I have made....and let me tell you, it's worth every penny. Never has my vynil sounded so neutral and real. The clarity and depth it reveals coupled with the excellent soundstaging makes you feel as if it's "live" in front of you.
Despite being very revealing (ie. digging out information and detail that you've never heard before), it is quite sympathetic towards vynil that is, shall we say, not in the best of order.
Even my "digital addict" friends have complimented how it seem to fill the room with music/detail BUT without actually sounding loud (no mean feat!).
If there is a "problem" it is down to the fact that since purchasing the Spacedeck I can't slap a disc on and do the housework. It's qualities demand an attentive ear and you are rewarded 10-fold. Consequently, my cd's have now become just background music (along with the radio and cassette).
Although fully manual, the changing of speeds (33 and 45) is a breeze and the actual operation of the deck itself even easier. Powered by an off-board motor, you simply "spin the wheel" to go and vice-versa to stop.
In summary, I understand that the U.K. market represents only about 10 per cent of the total sales of decks from this fine company. I say to anyone in the U.K. who loves their vynil, don't be put off by what initially seems expensive. You get what you pay for and you'll never regret paying for a Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck!
