Strength:

High headroom
Low impedence drive capability
Low noise circuitry
Phono input for moving magnet cartridge turntable
Variable loudness control
CD Direct switch to bypass the tone controls for purer sound
Runs cool, even when it's cranking!
VG build quality on the inside (where it counts)
Reliable - still in use after 15 years and works perfectly
Binding post speaker connectors
Remote control
Compact dimensions for the power produced

Weakness:

The ubiquitous plain black box case (they put the money into the guts,
not into audio jewelry which has no effect on the sound)

It's not free?

This receiver and its replacement, the RX497, are absolute steals for the
audiophile and music lover on a tight budget. Tons of clean power with serious
low-impedence drive capability - I drove Polk SDA-2 speakers (a 3-4 ohm load)
with Paradigm Atoms simultaneously going in the dining room with no problem
whatsoever. The sound was always crisp and clean and very dynamic for an
entry-level receiver. I've had a comparable Denon receiver as well and I thought
the Yamaha was definitely better sounding. You'd have to spend a lot more to
seriously improve on this receiver; I'd put the money into better speakers
where you can really notice the improvement. My highest recommendation
for budget amplification!

Customer Service

Never needed any repairs! I opened it up and cleaned the insides one time.
