Strength:

Smooth Sound, Massive Power, Ability To Put Out More Power Than Actual Rating, Good Tuning Controls, Over Load Protection, Short Protection(To Speaker Terminals,4 Tone Controls, 3 Tape Monitors, 2 Phono Jacks, 1 Aux Jack, 2 Mic Jacks (For Left And Right), PreAmp In And Out, 5 Protection Fuses To Protect Every Part Of The System.

Weakness:

Wight (85 Pounds), Size, Phono2 is Linked To The Mic Jack, Blows To Many Speakers(Not Like Thats A Weekness), When Moving The Heat Sinks Dig Into Your Hands, cannot change the volume to an extreamly low volume.

I got this stereo from my dad because he was upgrading to a surround sound system (VDX-605), which I belive was a bad choice. He used to power 2 8" speakers which were rated at 200 watts. He also gave these speakers to me. I decided to see what this stereo could do so I had a party and the stereo blew the hell out of the 8". So I decided that I would need bigger speakers which were 4 12" subs rated at 300 watts. I have been using them ever sence exept for the occasinal fuse blow in 1 or another speaker (which is not an easy task).

ONE WORD TO ALL PEOPLE WHO OWN SX-1250'S

I Strongly suggest that you replace Zener Diode D1 and D3 with a 25 volt Zener Diode on the stabilizer assembly if you run the stereo very hard. If you don't you have a seriouse risk of blowing out the whole stablizer board, which is not very easy task to fix.

PS I have the scamtics for the SX-1250 if you need them. (82

Strength:

The Power is awesome.. sounds dynamite at any volume level. Lots of great inputs and a nice phono stage.

Weakness:

Speaker wire jacks... and I'm not really fond of the 1 wire bridge between the pre-and power amps.

I picked this up at an estate auction for 25$.. cosmetically it looked good... but for whatever reason nobody seemed to care. Nothing of value audio wise was going for any kind of money that day... so I took all 70 pounds of it to my car. I cleaned it up.. and tried it out.. the knobs cracked like a CB radio... oh joy.. off too Radio SHack. So after an hour of taking this monster apart, I got all the pots cleaned (Tuner Control or WB 40 does miracles)... I hooked up some Marantz SP1200 speakers to it and... low and belold when I hit the power the lights dimmed for a moment... egad that draws current.

Anyway, after completing the restoration process, I'm glad to say that this is one of the finest amps I've owned... the dynamics are wonderful.. the sound is clean, and it drives speakers with ease. Having it apart really showed me what this thing is made of... Point to Point Wireing.. all Discreet circuitry... none of these IC chip garbage that is made today. This is one of the amps that todays amps all pray to. he he.

Seriously though, I won't part with this one.. I am saving up for speakers worthy of it... but it was worth the 3 hour restoration process. If you can find one of these for under a grand... or get one cheap and fix it... or get someone else to fix it... It's really worth it. This amp is just plain awesome.

Recently I also re-did a Sansui AU-DX11 Mark II... and an SX-626... that Sansui is great.. but I still go with the 1250. The reason they don't make them like this anymore is that nobody could afford them!! The ones that are that good are 3-4 grand so it seems.

Strength:

Awesome power, clarity, and crystal clear sound

Weakness:

It really brings out the flaws in poorly recorded music, and a wheight of 65 lbs which might bother some people.
But not me!!

I am currently running a pair of Cerwin Vega AL-1000's which are rated at a 1000 watts peak power off my sx-1250 bproperly and the
sx-1250 is rated at 165 watts rms at 8ohms and 200 watts rms at 4ohms I have even heard my speakers on a
Bryston 4B-ST amplifier that is rated 400 watts rms at 4ohms per channel and I would have to say they were very much the same sounding exept for the Bryston being a little tighter because of the power. What would you rather spend $225 canadian for the Pioneer or $2600 cad. for the Bryston, and plus the matching
pre-amp which which would put you back another $2200. I would pay now for a used one what it would cost for a new one. Bottem line I love this Pioneer and recomend any one intrested in geting a high end reciever to get the sx-1250 you wont be disipointed, I sure not.

Strength:

Power supply & capacitance; FM section.

Weakness:

Small speaker posts.

This is the Pioneer SX-5590, as the SX-1250 except it is black (Euro model?? Has multiple voltages). Tremendous power reserves. FM is excellent (living in the Great Plains helps, too). Driving a pair of JBL CF-150s the SPLs can be punishing, yet clean and accurate. My primary stereo is a pair of Soundcraftsmen PCR800 amps bridged for 600wrms each, and the Pioneer (the Sansui, too) do not pale at all when driving the JBLs.
I would recommend anyone that is able to find any of the receivers I listed above (Similar products used) to not hesitate to buy, if the price is comfortable. This big bad boy, though, is still clearly a winner and a keeper.

Strength:

power clarity what else do you need!

Weakness:

yeah right!

well what do I say this rules.... it has powered my Dahlquist DQ-10's for some time and it is the best sound I have heard bulletproof construction and sounds ten times better than what you can get from todays high end like NAD, sony ES, Yamaha, HK, etc.... well you can not get a toroidial power supply, AMP is 3 stage darlington push pull with independant power supplies in final stage, dual 22uf dual caps per channel, and .05 THD today for les than 3 grand in any amp yet alone a reciever. Those days are gone!

The only thing better is an sx-1980!

BASS it great overall sweet and clear!

Strength:

More than adequate power, still shocks the younger generation

Weakness:

small spkr posts

What can I say that hasn't been said. This thing is sweet. I picked it up from a pawn shop "not working". The pre out jumpers were missing. Problem solved. This thing was in someones attic for years I guess. Had more dust and debris on it, but cleaned up very nicely. Complete disassembly was mandatory. Power up time was great. Playes crystal clear, blows the breakers on my Cerwin Vegas. I will say this though. Combine it with a equalizer, and you'll never turn the EQ off. It only helps an already great sound get better.By the way, any large Nikko owners, feel free to mail me. There's very few of us out there.

Strength:

has ok sound, quality build.

Weakness:

speaker outputs too small, undersized power supply, inabilty to drive 4 ohm loads, can't find owners manual.

probably about all you can expect from something this old. can drive efficient 8 ohm speakers to ANY desirable volume. built like a tank and if taken care of properly will last a lifetime, many parts are still available for servicing. not recommended for 4 ohm loads.

I recently picked a sx-1250 from a local audio dealer as a backup receiver for my sx-1980. I use this unit in my garage with a set of altec lansing model 8 speakers and a set of DLK 1 1/2's. What I like the most is the clean sound and great fm sensitivity...this is a 120 volt 650 watt US model as opposed to the 110,120,220,240 volt 1200 watt european model. My buddy has one purchased in germany with the euro voltage selector. If anyone has info as to why the euro model has a consumption of 1200 watts please e-mail me. Anyway...I will grab any of these beasts I can find as it is truly a solid unit. The heat sinks are massive wraparounds that really do work ...this unit will get very warm if you crank it up...I recommend a small fan to circulate air around the unit.

Strength:

Extreme Power and excellent sound quality

Weakness:

No Remote Control

I recently added the SX-1250 to my stereo, and am REALLY happy with it. I now run both the SX-1050 and SX-1250 together, the 1050 driving Pioneer HPM-100's and the 1250 driving Infinity SM-150's. BTW, the HPM-100's outperform the Infinity Studio Monitors. By adding an SA-6700 amp, I get 6 channels available, so using the AUX inputs on each, I have full 5.1 capability for digital surround - it works exceptionally well, and I have greater control over the soundstage than is possible using a single integrated surround sound unit... plus, you'd have to spend $3K+ to get this kind of power and sound quality in amplifiers.

The SX-1250 performs beautifully with CD and decoded digital outputs from today's sources, and the bottom line is that the top end Pioneer SX series is awesome.

The SX-1250 will drive my infinity SM's (& the Pioneer HPM's) with such force that half-volume will nearly knock you down. I'm serious about this. And the sound quality will remain undistorted well beyond what your ears can take for more than a few moments! This setup would power a club easily, and I'll likely be deaf soon...

If you like music loud - loud enough to feel it in your chest, so loud you think something's going to explode, and you don't have several thousand dollars to toss into a stereo, then get one of these powerhouse receivers. The SX-1050 is almost as good, though uses only two beer-can sized caps instead of the four in the 1250.

If anyone can recommend some speakers (affordable) that are up to the challenge of all this power, and that sound as punchy and sweet as the HPM-100's, I'd appreciate an email - while mine sound great, I expect something to blow any day now. Maybe I should just get more HPM-100's...
