NAD 7240PE Receivers

NAD 7240PE Receivers

DESCRIPTION

The 7240PE receiver consists of the 3240PE integrated amplifier, with its vast reserves of clean, solid power for the the wide dynamic range of modern recordings, plus an exceptionally sensitive digital tuner. While the 7240PE is rated at 40 watts/channel of steady-state power, its +6 dB of IHF dynamic headroom means that its dynamic power for musical transients exceeds 160 watts/channel at 8 ohms and 200 watts/channel at 4 or 2 ohms.

Ability to handle 4 ohm loads

I like this receiver very much. The model year is before
1988. This receiver is my wife's. It drives my Acoustic Research TSW 410 speakers with much greater ease than my Denon receiver did. I am impressed with the ability to handle the low ohm loads of my three way speakers. My setup is sufficiently transparent to show the difference between digital and analog recordings. This receiver has been used daily for over 12 years and is still going strong. I am considering a purchase of an amplifier and will probably buy another NAD component.

Strength:

Power reserve, Low distortion, Simple

Weakness:

Remote (volume), # of hook-ups

After have a 7020 since new, I decided to upgrade my receiver. I have a pair of the orignal AR-3 speakers that have a nominal 4 ohm rating. These speakers have great bass, but lack output in the high end. They are also quite inefficient. The 7240 shines in this department. The power reserve really adds dynamics whether it be classical or rock. If you are into vinyl, the dynamic range for the phono pre-amp is hard to beat (especially for a 'receiver'). I've had no problems with the machine except when my son was running near full volume with the loadness & bass equ. on...

Strength:

Terrific sound quality, Ease of operation, Durability, Styling. Power Envelope can really have impact on good recordings.

Weakness:

None in it's Price catagory.
Power Envelope can sometimes be a little overpowering when listening to recordings with very dramatic transients (classical) but is defeatable with "low level" button.

My first foray into buying stereo equipment was buying a Fischer Receiver (it looked great, but sounded like crap-hashy/grainy sound). I owned it for 18 months until it fried itself to a desk (no fault of my own). Then my uncle gave me his old Tube pre-amp and power-amp kit. I think it was called a DynaStereo70, but I'm not sure and I didn't keep it very long - I was afraid it would follow in the foot steps of the Fischer -those old tubes got really hot. So I went to a specialty audio shop and traded in my uncle's old equipment towards the purchase of an NAD 7240PE. Simple styling, enough power to run my Boston Acoustics T-500 and quality was not an issue. Sold.
Immediately, I found the sound to be clear, warm, and forward (many big steps in the right direction). I am only now after 12 years of trustworthy operation looking to upgrade my system. The NAD 7240PE has always been reliable and a pleasure to use and enjoy. I will actually use it as the pre-amp in my system until I can afford a new dedicated pre-amp.
I whole heartedly recommend this product for all it's fine virtues.

Strength:

SIMPLICITY!

Weakness:

A simple remote unit to adjust the volume would have been great.

Apart from blowing the transistors twice (ouch! very expensive to repair), my NAD 7240PE has been great. It has been almost ten years, and it still sounds great. I fell in love with this unit when I first saw it hooked up to a pair of Klipsch Forte. As I was living in the dorms, I had to settle for the Bose 301, which paired up relatively well and also has been service for the last 10 satisfying years. (bought this unit in 1990 - so excuse the 1995)

I have numerous time demonstrated how good a 40 watts/channel amp paired with Bose 301 series II blown away a lot of the "un-natural" producing units out there. Soft clipping is another plus for this unit.

Have retired this unit to do only private listening purposes and to pair it up again with a Klipsch speaker. This is only my personal preference, because there are many other good speakers out there.

Definitely will purchase another NAD product in the near future. Thinking of a T-770 soon!!!

Strength:

Clean design, layout, good power for 40W rating.

Weakness:

Unreliable, craftsmanship not up to par.

I just had to respond when I saw the ratings for this receiver in several previous reviews. I bought mine in 1987 and had in in the shop twice over the years for major transistor malfunctions and other, assorted problems. Then, recently it started giving me an intermittent snap, crackle, and pop in the right channel, which I suspect may have led to the demise of one of my DCM speakers. Also, the speaker connectors are cheaply made and have deteriorated (not just recently, but after only a couple years).

I thought this NAD was a great thing when I bought it. "Conservatively rated" at 40W per channel. A real wolf in sheep's clothing. And, to be fair, I haven't been dissatisfied with the sound until just recently. With this latest problem, I gave up on it and purchased an Onkyo TX8511. I set it up, popped in a Victoria Williams (she is just so fabulous!) CD in the player and, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The richness and clarity of this Onkyo receiver blows the NAD away. And this was with one crippled speaker. Perhaps it's not a fair comparison. The Onkyo is a 100W receiver. Perhaps it's in another league, quality-wise. Still, I realized what I had been missing all these years.

Big complaint, however, remains the reliabliliy and workmanship. With all the strong reviews here, perhaps I just got a lemon. But I thought you should know. Rock on.

Strength:

Smooth sound, Great Tuner and Phono stage. Can drive any speakers that have been attached to it (EPI, B&W, Dali, Monitor Audio)

Weakness:

Speaker connectors flimsy.

Its been used in all sorts of situations for 10 years now and never missed a beat. Was about to replace it rather than the speakers (Monitor Audio Silver 5i) but by chance the old Technics Cd player died and was replaced by NAD C521. The amp stays , sounds better than ever. They were right at HiFI Choice(UK), the C521 really breathes some life into the system.
May my next surround amp be as reliable and musical as the 7240.

Sound

Big mistake, bad sounding receiver. Mid-tones are a blur, lows sound like a car stereo. Can't get it to sound right.
Hoped it would sound better after break in, it did not. Tried other cables which made a small difference. Tried a different cd-player but it still sounds bad.
My speakers (JBL S38) sound great on my HK AVR75, so it can't be the speakers. The selectice tone control makes rock sound like hip-hop. If you like rock music buy HK, no comparison.

You get what you pay for.

Good sound, solid construction

Say what?

I´ve had my 7240PE for about 15 years and haven´t had a single problem, so it was well spend money back in the 80´s. It has really been used a lot, first as my main system and for the past 6-7 years as my back-up system.

I have even driven the NHT 2.5 with it, without too much complaint (usually I use the 216 THX for them).

I think the sound´s very nice, and a lot of good sounding watts.

Since I´ve had no problems at all with it like a lot of others on this site I can warmly recommend it.

Strength:

Good sound, surprising grunt for its power rating.

Weakness:

Built quality. Some transistors exploded, the tuner section's disappeared (display's there, but no sound) and it's been in for repairs twice. Dry solder joints are apparently a problem with the units, which is a shame because otherwise they're a good-sounding product (with dodgy reliability). I also have a NAD 5420 CD player and that's 10 years old and going strong, although the display disappeared a couple of years ago.

Good sound, bad build quality.

Strength:

Great sound regardless of its RMS rating (as far as it's running).
Good looking design, inside and out.

Weakness:

Flimsy reliability, just like a 1990s' American Car.
It won't last long!

I've enjoyed this machine a while. A couple of years ago, radio went out. I got it serviced at a NAD service center, costing $120~130 back then. Recently it began to develop serious channel unbalance. Basically preamp part is dying out! Today, Tape channel was gone, officially becoming totally crippled. It seems to me that power part is still alive although a slight noise is noticeable on the left channel when the volume is turned way up. This machine looks great and seems to be designed decently inside and out, but obviously the electronic parts used on the circuits are not quality parts, at least it's not built to last. A great initial quality winner, but won't last. Do not expect this machine will last like a Japanese car. Good start, but soon to be ceased. I am disappointed.
