Strength:

POWER, A-B-C speaker inputs, awesome look (although difficult to fit with handles attached), easy to use (just keep little kids away from the volume knob).

Weakness:

About 5 years ago I started getting static from right channel in speaker A mode. Both C channels work fine but A and B are fading out on me. No other complaints other than I wish it could be converted to dolby digital!

Bought in late 70's (I was in my late teens) to drive my Klipsch Cornwalls. Unforunately I now have to give it up for a home theatre system which will not produce the same beautiful/powerful sound as the Kenwood. It will, however make movies more enjoyable. Hooked up with a Audio Control C-101 equilizer, Pioneer CF-9191 tape deck and Technic direct drive turntable, I still get the same incredible sound as I did in 1978. I hate to give it up.

Strength:

Built in PA systen. Uncomparible Power Clarity Sensitivity Beauty The unit was magic!

Weakness:

Had to keep people away from it. After all these years friends STILL trying to outdo it! Smoked a few speakers since 1976! Heavy unit. Between loud music gunfire powertools machinery motorcycles and concerts I have Tinnitis (ear ringing)!

A legend around here from years past, out side partys and at my old trailer this thing kicked ass! The bass shook your heart, treble was a hot wire in the brain.Out in the woods where I lived it could be heard miles away at mid volume. With a deep fringe antenna routenly recieved FM 200 miles away. Over the years i've learned to tune and repair the reciever. Anyone out there got a beater for parts?

Strength:

Looks, great sound quality, great tuner, easy access controls, Rear connectons very accessable. Very easy controls to use. Works great with a remote switch like BSR X10. (I saw this on an Elvis Presly Movie and thought it was so neat-LOL).

Weakness:

Did I mention it was HEAVY!!! It is also very wide, wider than a standard stereo case, so you have to find one it will fit in and will support its WEIGHT (remember I mentioned it was HEAVY!!) Not all that bad a deal considering how great the unit is.

HaHaHaHa, Reading these reviews brings back all the moments when I was looking for my first "GOOD" receiver. Remember, back in 76, those were the times between analog displays and digital. The manufacterers were dreaming up anything they could to make a sale at the audio stores, including separate power supplies, DC control, A light here, a knob there. I dont think the receivers were "searching" for stations yet, but was soon to happen. I remember a radio station state that all the goodies that the manufacturers could dream up were on the present (1976) Units on the market. I found my Kenwood KR9600 in a small Mall Electronics store, in 1979, still in the box. They set it up and let me play with it, I turned it on and the face lit up in its amazing fashion, the sound was fabulous, even on their lousy speakers. It was picking up stations with the piece of wire (antenna) that they used on the roof. No one knew the output (watts), it was not even noted in the manual. I had to write Kenwood to get a flyer that stated power output. This was when I came to realize that I had bought Kenwoods Top Of The Line Receiver. Getting mine home, I quickly brought it into the house, MAN, IT WAS HEAVY and wide! I think it weighs in at 60 pounds or better. Hooked to my speakers (Utah) and tape devices. I had sound unmatched by most other receivers of the time, and at 3watt output I was rattling the windows. I loved it. I found later the receiver was rated at 160watt per channel, no wonder my 50 watt speakers were screaming the joy of music, the Kenwood was running at idle (about 3 watts)and the sound was loud, clear, free of rumble, just fantastic. With Bass, Midrange, Treble controls, 2 phono inputs ( a little odd for today ) 2 tape inputs, fantanstic tuner, mic injection, tape A and B monitor, mute, 3 pair of speaker selection. Meters were included for Signal strenth, power(Watts)Left and Right and another I can't recall what its used for. I finally had one of those great sounding units that most dreamed about. Styled in the vintage Brushed Aluminum front and black perforated case, it even had handles on the front to look like a rack unit. When turned on the face glows with the instrument lights. Now going on 27 years old, it has made it through with no needed repairs and one light bulb change out. (If I recall correctly, it has a couple dozen bulbs and cost over $50 at that time). The music it has played and recordings made have always been fantastic. Never a humm or crackle like some of my older units. Though I have bought a newer unit with surround sound, it still cant match my KR9600, even today. I still use the KR9600 for odd recordings or just to listen to a great tune. Someday I may have to give it up, but until something better comes along, I'll keep it right where it is, ready to play another tune or listen to some distant radio station. If you had not enjoyed the sound from one of these receivers, you've missed a great experience.

I don't beleive there is any other similar products, at least not up to par with my KR9600. I think Marantz was out there as a close competitor at the time, but after they were sold and changed hands,

Strength:

Plenty of power. Bass, midrange, and treble controls. Awesome tuner, 2 phono inputs, and 2 tape monitor positions. Sound injection control.

Weakness:

Weight. contacts in toggle swithes that need to be cleaned with age.

This receiver has a very rich, full-bodied sound that is virtually impossible to find in today's receivers. The KR 9600 is rated at a conservative 160 watts/channel. I have this unit hooked up to a pair of 15" Cerwin Vega speakers, and boy does it rock!!! It is so loud, you can't stand to be in the same room with it. This one will get the cops called on you!

Strength:

TONS of good clean power.

Weakness:

not made anymore?

hahahahah, wow, I can't belive I'm reading reviews of the Kenwood KR-9600. I purchased one in ~1975 and had it for >20yrs. THis was by far the best receiver I've ever had or heard. Music is just so much richer when your receiver doesn't even have to strain to play it. It finally quit. I tried to have it repaired twice but was not successful. The descriptions are just too funny. Someone broke into my house once and stole all kinds of stuff, but left the KR9600 by the window, it was too heavy... hahahaaha Thanks for the memories.

Bought my 9600 new in 1977. It has been in the shop twice during this time. Had the power switch fail and on another occasion a transitor. Repair cost were not much. I have really enjoyed it for all of these years.

Strength:

Huge clean power supplies, lots of controls, great point to point connections...looks COOL when lit up at night....Did I Mention the power?!?!

Weakness:

well, i dont know if this is a weakness but its heavy as hell and shipping was a b#$%^ when I first got it. Maybe the only weakness is that it is relatively unknown and underappreciated.....

I think that this is one of those receivers that came along quietly, did its thing just as well as the Marantz and Macintosh''''''''''''''''s did and didn''''''''''''''''t really have much to say about it. Most people will come along and say: "It''''''''''''''''s a Kenwood, how good can it be?" Lemme tell ya....if you havent ever heard one..then you should shut your mouth. This may be one of the most powerful recievers ever made. They rate it at 160 watts a channel but come on folks...we all know better. I had mine open a little while ago and took a peak at the power supplies... I was not surprised when I saw 200W written on the side of the transformer. That''''''''''''''''s right, 200W a channel into 8 ohms. WOW. With the specs that this thing owns...less than .007% THD at full power, dual 200W power transformers, one of the best tuners ive ever seen, 2 phono inputs, 1 aux, 2 tape monitors....tone controls...muting and filter controls...sound injection, connections for 3 different pairs of speakers (a, b, a&b, c, off)...all the meters you''''''''''''''''ll ever need..great construction...smooooooth aluminum dials and buttons...HUGE heat sinks on the power supplies....what more could a guy ask for? Oh, I know. Knowing that when I hook up two pairs of L100''''''''''''''''s to this bad boy Im getting at least 350W per channel. That just makes me smile.....

Strength:

Power - Does anybody know the exact wattage??

Weakness:

Just try to pick it up.

Whoa, I didn''t know this thing was worth anything. My Uncle gave it to me. I mean, it is a really awesome amplifier, but I figured it was too old to be worth anything. I had it in the back of my pickup. But yeah, the people that claim this amp puts out some power are not lying. I can''t get it up past 1 1/2 out of 10 without blowing my sub in my room. When I first got it, the -20 db button was pushed in. I didn''t realize that this feature was even on it until a week later. Talk about a surprise.
